Well, that's a little embarrassing to say but in my country the response to the virus was probably among the worst in the world, so now we have a case study on herd immunity for Covid19. That's the only explanation for the decline in infections and deaths in the studied city, since safety guidelines were poorly followed and social distancing was almost inexistent during the peak of the pandemic. The bad news is that the herd immunity was supposedly achieved with around 66% of the population infected.

So between two and three times as bad as the flu.

What I don't see anywhere (and I could have missed it) is: What portion of the people who got "infected" actually developed significant symptoms?

That's really interesting. Maybe the correlation between age and severity of symptoms is actually higher than it was initially believed.

Examine the premises behind this article.

1) It's based on the assumption that mask-wearing is effective despite data from numerous places showing a substantial increase in cases shortly after mask mandates were imposed. The timing correlation between these "spikes" and the mandates should be enough to make one wonder whether mask mandates aren't actually counter-productive.

2) It's also based on the assumption that people remain just as fastidious about hand-washing as they were several months ago, and personal observations tell me this is not the case. Hand-washing only works if you do it and do it thoroughly.

That said, it is of course an evolutionary advantage for a virus to become more contagious, but also to produce less severe symptoms.
