Not a lot there but better than nothing. I don't know of a source of info to interpret those, but hopefully we (with Niels' help!) can piece it together from the TP2.0 Audis.
I hope I can get the A6 4G back soon and eventually the Touareg to see if it needs any tweaking.

On the A8 front, we've had one report from a HUC so far (thank you Scott) that wasn't entirely promising as far as the ability of the HUC to work reliably with that generation of BEM:
; Address 61: Battery Regul.
;Control Module Part Number: 4E0 910 181 C
; Component and/or Version: J0644 BEM H12 0550
But at least one attempt succeeded in getting all records 1 through 18.

4G should be back on Friday afternoon, I think.

But at least one attempt succeeded in getting all records 1 through 18.

I get back from snowy St Johns tomorrow so will try it and report back, I too have A8 and use HUC

17.2.2 is out. Found a longstanding limitation in the HUC code that would truncate very long history messages in CAN TP2.0 (not UDS). As far as I can tell only the models having one or several particularly lengthy records (like 20 trips energy balance or 16 shut-off stage history in an 8K) should be affected but you wouldn't know to begin with since it was being truncated with previous versions :)
Also fixed newline issues in the VCDS session log (not the autosave file).
Uwe has confirmed that UDS support introduced in 17.2.1 also works on later Touareg gateways.

Unfortunate timing ...

:Bursts with excitement:

So did I when I saw this update to what was my original thread. :D

Wow! I take 2 days off [1 to got out 'playing trains' with my friend's kids [see rhdr.org.uk] / 1 to travel 35 miles to see my old work colleague for lunch and a beer] and the VCDS BEM Log world changes. Frustratingly I came back today and before I saw this, put the 'old' SW 0240 BEM I purchased into the car. The one I had all the problems with is sitting on the table. :banghead:

Will go out shortly and run the new beta code on my A8 with the replacement 'old' ECU ...

Hmm, those were with 17.2.0.2 which didn't support UDS very well to put it midly ;)

Julian

This is SO important, I've postponed the evening meal and gone out to the car instead. :)

Just run Beta 17.2.2 on my A8 Battery Manager whose Autoscan earlier this afternoon was as follows:

Code:
Address 61: Battery Regul. Labels: User\4E0-910-181.lbl

No fault code found.

Sadly, all I got in the screen 'box' after about 5 seconds was the following 4 lines:

Let's see some debug files.

Sorry Eric; didn't get any files saved in any of the usual folders and didn't quite understand the need to use DEBUG.

However, having reread your earlier text I'm going to retry with debug set now that I think I understand it!

Rerun with Debug=1024

Hi Eric; just rerun with Debug set to 1024.

Still didn't get a file like "Hist-19-8R0-907-468-P-20170214-1708.txt" in the logs folder but I did get a DLM file for ECU 61 in the Debug folder.

Debug file being sent separately to support.

Regards - Julian

PS BTW I'm using a HUC.

We're actually very upset when setting debug to 1024 results in a different behavior :) (it's very very rare thankfully)
So I'm able to see that what the car is sending is more or less identical to what VCDS displays. Here's the first field:
0012000000000000000000000000000000000000
That's the "good" news. The bad news is there's a whole lot of zeroes in all those messages. Why? I think either
-VCDS is not calling the right function for your module
-The module swapping has confused your BEM
I'm going to do some research on the first possibility, in the meantime feel free to try your newer module. So far we've received positive feedback on three separate instances (!) of the following module:
Code:
Control Module Part Number: 4E0 910 181 C
Component and/or Version: J0644 BEM H12 0550

Hi Eric; thanks for the update.

The BEM can't be 'confused' as I actually replaced the complete BEM ECU; a non-trivial 90 mins worth! So I've got a new 'old' BEM out of another car, which after installing, I cleared the old [2002!] DTCs and reset the battery code to match my battery. Since I believe the BEM keeps logs fro the last three batteries, it presumably has two of the logs from the previous A8 and a new one for the code I've just entered today. [Aha - Maybe I haven't got any history yet?] But I don't really want to change back to the original BEM as I need the potential extra info. the ECU may display to diagnose a current battery flat issue I have.

However, notwithstanding that, the BEM part / level you quote above is the 'final' BEM ECUs for the A8 D3s which was manufactured between about May 2005 and Mar 2009 - these are all firmware level 0550. My newly installed 'old one' was manufactured Mar 2003 - firmware 0240 - and the one in my car since it was built in Nov 2004 was manufactured in Oct 2004 - firmware level originally 0390 but updated to 0510 by dealer. See Autoscan edits below

Code:

Address 61: Battery Regul. Labels: User\4E0-910-181.lbl

And FYI, since I keep 'interesting' A8 D3 Autoscans for reference, I've seen the following firmware levels on the relatively few A8 logs that I've ever seen - 0230, 0240, 0390, 0510, 0550. So you might deduce that there are at least five potential variations of logs on the A8. [I've looked at some A6 logs too and there are even more BEM fw variations].:banghead:

OK after doing some digging (thanks Peter and Dana) it turns out 4E0 910 181 B seems to use "different" history data, whereas 4E0 910 181 C is referenced as compatible with the C6/4F history data (which explains why they're working fine with our current code! :) ). Other info not directly relevant to your case, the minimum firmware revision to have history data is 230 (you have 240 so you should be good). Now to see if I can find what request to send and how to interpret it, without having the module on hand :banghead:

Good progress guys :)

Not entirely surprising findings about the different history data formats; the 4E0 910 181C BEM package is a different physical design to the 4E0 910 181/181A/181B models [the battery cable goes to the middle of, rather than underneath, the case] and presumably came out of design changes thought necessary for the C6/4F chassis requirements.

Julian

BTW, this table reflects what I've found by looking at lots of ebay listings in the UK and US. You guys will probably understand all the HW/SW/nn/nnnn changes far more than me, but the A8 [and A6] BEMs have had a chequered history, the changes of which haven't really been explained by any publicly available documents.

FWIW I ordered a "4E0 910 181B 02 024" (presumably same FW 240 as you) on ebay, that was cheap enough that we won't be upset if we can't get it to talk ($35). Should be here middle of next week.

Thanks for the update Eric: These BEM versions are a real puzzle. Let me quote from the BEM update TSB dated Jan 26. 2009:

"4. BEM SW up to version 240 cannot be updated and does not need to be updated, as both the hardware and the software work correctly. ...". Which a) implies more than one SW version before 0240 - as the TSB says "up to 0240" and b) the SW is unchangeable in the ECU - "cannot be updated".

But my installed BEM definitely has "4E0 915 181 / SW:4E0 910 181 / 02 016 / 04.03.03" on the label, implying 'H02 FW 0160', yet my VCDS scan of it is clearly different than that:

Julian

The only way I can explain it is if someone has replaced the 'lid' of the ECU from an earlier one.

Julian, check Advance ID... I think it has a flash status - this may tell you if the firmware has been updated? I could be wrong as I'm sitting at work away from my VCDS...

Also, maybe Audi consider ENERGIEMANAGER and BEM as different components/technology doing an identical job?

Don't know if the count of '1' is the original 'flash' at manufacture or if it reflects another flash at a later stage. Will be interesting to see what yours says ...

I think Audi just renamed the ENERGIEMANAGER to the BEM when they redesigned it.
