I just bought this car and did some work on it and found out the cluster is busted and has an internal problem. I'm trying to swap clusters in a Audi TT 8N 180 HP Quattro 8N0906018S. I sourced a cluster for a great price but found it was IMMO3 but my ECU is IMMO 2. I retrieved the login pin for the new cluster and can login but the VIN shows when I put it in not XXXXXXXXX. When I login then go to measuring block 50 it's not available I have the old cluster and I have the black tagged version of the clusters PIN 7 SKU. It appears to run but shows a low oil pressure light and the RPM and speedometer does not work. Was the ECU immo defeated or something messed with? What am I missing?

What model year is this car? Specifically the ECU?

My fuzzy recollection is that in North America, the TT went straight from no Immo at all to Immo 3 at roughly MY 2001.

It’s a 2001, the car runs fine but there’s not communication with the datalink at all no RPM/Speedo but that was after I edited the soft coding the Cluster apparently was from a USA out of a 2004 TT.

If I bring it to the dealer can they unlock it? They say it’s not compatible when I called but other sites say it is?

(Sigh) This is quite a mis-match; you may be better off just seeing if you can get an IMMO2 8N1 version. Theoretically it is possible, but the 8N2 cluster needs to behave as IMMO2 (IMMO3 ready). To get to that stage I think you need to get MVB 023.4 to state 4.0 (New) - how that’s achieved I’m not sure at the moment.

Channel 50 will not be available on 8N2 because it is already a status 6.0 meaning it is expecting to be an IMMO3 device. IMMO3 does its secret handshake with the ECU over CAN, but IMMO2 does it over W-Line. Therefore 8N2 is expecting a response from the ECU on its CAN - but of course it does not exist.

Also, if you manage to get 8N2 to talk to the ECU over W-Line, you’ll have to upgrade all of your keys to variable code transponders.

If you could find an 8N1 cluster, it would be fit, 01-ECU save 000 to Adp Ch0, 17-Instruments match existing keys, done!

Thanks for the info! I’ve been doing research and calling dealers but even the dealers give me the wrong cluster number because of my year. You’re right about the incompatibility also I don’t know how to get it to 04 without finding it in the EEPROM somehow. The Speedo and RPM used CAN on the newer one and can’t connect without editing it by unlocking it. I ordered a new cluster but I would have to do a ECU swap like you said keys and ignition key to use immobilizer 3. I wish I did more research before sourcing my cluster. Just going to write my old clusters EEPROM to the exact model I currently have.

Be careful when writing eeprom dump to donor dash as you may render it useless or have a expensive repair on your hands. This dash has motorola mcu inside With crypt mask early dash most likely 912D60 and the later dash most likely has a MC912DG128 inside .Most likely and best solution is to find correct dash for your model year. If you want post dump file I will take a look. Did you make a backup from dash before you edited data? IMMO2 consist of ecm and immobox IIRC, therefore if its IMMO2 it only consist of ECM talking to immobox that stores keys. I suspect immo3 dash should work as long as it shows mileage on the lcd and not SAFE. IF shows SAFE I am not sure if it could be done as earlier cars had different MCU than later vehicles. In theory with the right tools you can add keys on the bench to the immo3 dash, so that dash if it sees matching keys SAFE should be gone. However I still believe it may need to be married to ecm, not sure never tried. I will assume that tach and speedo possibly worked before eeprom was edited. This is common when wrong data is written to the dash. I would hope you have a backup of original to go back to. The dealer will not be able to help you. They cannot unlock dash they can only adapt however if dash is immo3 and vehicle is immo2 they wont have the tools or knowledge to help you. You need a specialty shop to "TRY" to make it work or the correct dash. Again if you have both dumps and could tell me how they were read I will take a look.

I did not write anything to the EEPROM yet I just changed the soft coding from miles to KM’s on the new cluster. I was talking about the one I'm ordering it’s the exact same part #, I plan to write to that with my dump. Is it possible to make it a "virgin" cluster and set MBV 22 to 04 through EEPROM?

The dump was read from K com cable(CHINA) and ECU MPPS.

If you want to take a look at the EEPROM's here they are with the ECU dump as well. https://ufile.io/arcn75a4

Ok can you change adaption channel 60 in dash ? or tell me what it reads? If It reads 1025 please try to change to 0.

I have already tried to change some of the CAN gateway data but the second I try to type something it it sets back to 1025 pasting doesn’t work. I used the arrows to go up and down it sends it but obviously fails right after. Also the car is at the garage right now so I can test tomorrow see if anything changes.

I suspect that perhaps changes are not allow as dash is not new or because you are trying edit eeprom and flash is saying no. Too many unknowns. However does the mileage show on LCD? or is SAFE visible?

Also have you tried adapting new dash using immo2 procedure?

It’s very strange, it’s almost like it has a immobilizer delete the mileage works fuel and temperature garages work the car can run it operates fine. I would use the cluster if only the speedo and RPM would update. Did a cluster output test and everything is operational. Like you said the coding of the immobilizer in the ECU works fine fob works just the two gauges don’t not sure if it’s coding or something more. Like you said if I could unlock it to service mode it probably could be adapted.

Also 919 dash normally talks via Kline and 920 dash send everything using Canbus. If you want tach and speedo to work I think your gonna need to run 2 canbus wires to the dash. As mentioned 920 gets signals via Canbus so analog rev signal is not supported and you need to pull 2 wires. See wiring diagram for this however I think it should be Ecu pin 58 + 60 to appropriate can drivetrain pins in instrument cluster, pin 18 and 19 in green connector at the dash. Note this will not get rid of your oil sensor light you would have to run the wires for that and install the sensor. I don't remember if it can be coded out on 920 dash or not. Also if you have immo light flashing on dash you would have to cover or remove the led. Also for canbus wires you can try taping at the abs module if thats easier for can high and can low. Your choice really it is some work but I think that's the only way to get it going. Unless you want to go through all that code break it down and try to edit. Even then it may or may not work.

Also have your tried adapting immo3 dash using immo2 procedure?

No I haven’t I’ll try it tomorrow thanks so for far with all this info!

Your new cluster is Definitely Immo 3 .
If cars runs that means 2 things, Either Car is with out immobilizer which most 2001 TT was in USA, or someone turn off Immobilizer in ECU.

Can you go here :
01-Engine
Adaptation -10
Ch 91
And tell me the value?

Also do you have Immo light on Old cluster when you turn ignition ON?

I suspect that perhaps changes are not allow as dash is not new or because you are trying edit eeprom and flash is saying no. Too many unknowns. However does the mileage show on LCD? or is SAFE visible?
It will not allow him to change Ch60 because it is new model 2004+ 8N2 are like that , It has nothing to do with Immo status 06 or 04. Even if you change to 04 it will be again same thing.
I just notice that he had 8N1 from 2000-2001 model.
So not possible to make 8N2 to work in older models like 2000-2001 None Immo cars , form my end his cluster looks like None Immo version.
He must look for 8N1 cluster .

I run in this problem before , Ch 60 will not allow you to change to 0 as his cars needs to be . Ch 60 is Power train signal for speed and Rpm.

From past experience if Immo status was 4 sometimes channel 60 could be changed, but never went deeper why some dashes it worked and in other it didn't. I think It will work, but needs canbus wires ran to the dash and install oil level sensor and run those wires as well. Alot of work and no reward if you ask me.
