I am a new owner of this car that had all service done previously at the dealership by the previous owner. It has 48,000 miles on it and last week when getting on the freeway I got a message on the console saying "Do Not Exceed 6000RPMs" with a yellow warning light. I was close to home and drove straight there and immediately ran an auto scan on the car. No codes were found. After doing some research, I checked the coolant level in the reservior and found that it was a little below the min mark when the car was cold so I filled it to the halfway point between min/max and took the car out for a test drive. While driving in the city all seemed well, but when I got on the freeway again the same thing happened with the 6000RPM warning. I scanned the car again and no codes. I have called a couple of shops near by and they said that if I get that rev warning there should be a code associated with it. I am running the Auto Scan feature on my car and am not seeing any codes. Am I doing something wrong?

Those engine ECUs include software that detects the coolant (and oil temperatures IIRC - at least that was true on my RS4) and eithers advises or limits the RPM if the temperatures are too low to safely allow high revs to be used.
Thanks @Uwe and @PetrolDave I checked the coolant temp with an old BT ODBII device and Torque Pro. I did it this way as my VCDS adapter is cabled and wanted to be able to hold the tablet in front of me. The coolant temp reached 245 degrees F before the 6000RPM warning showed. That's also when the Temp gauge on the car started to rise. I have read that the normal operating temp should be around 212F so I think that is a bit high. I immediately shut the car off when it hit that number.

Sounds like you have a problem with either the thermostat or a coolant pump - if the temperature gauge isn't starting to rise until the water temp reaches 245F then something isn't opening up the coolant circuit to the radiator correctly. Time to get a diagram of the coolant circuit and doing some mechanical investigation IMHO.
Thanks PetrolDave. I suspect it may be the thermostat or the water pump as well. I spoke to a mechanic yesterday that said most likely the T-Stat as the water pumps has a metalic impeller and he said those don't fail as often. I am going to schedule a day to have the car serviced next week.
It sounds like this one also advises (and/or limits?) if the coolant temp gets too high...?

On almost all modules it is. There was a transmission or two where it isn't because all of them report a plethora of faults that way at all times. In any case, I'm pretty confident it is enabled in that ECU.
