Auto leveling headlights not fully leveling mk7.5 Golf R

I have a MY19 Golf R with LED adaptive headlights. Before this car, I had a MY18 GTI with the same headlights. Upon starting the car, the GTI’s headlights would level like this:

As you can see, they lower, move to the left, move the right, then go back up.

My Golf R’s headlights do level when I start the car, but don‘t seem to do it fully. Instead, they will lower, move to the left, then go back up. (no right movement). They do however function fully when driving and no fault codes are present (yes, the scan I posted below is a few weeks old, but nothing has been changed).

I don’t remember whether or not this is how they functioned when I bought the car/before I started making coding/adaptation changes, but I did reach out on Vortex forums to see if any other fellow R owner’s headlights level the way mine do. They declined, saying theirs do the full left-right movement before returning to level position. I assume it must be just a minor coding/adaptation change to get them to fully level. Any help would be much appreciated.

The coding of the A5 camera says the LED lights aren't DLA (Dynamic Light Assist) - perhaps the GTI's lights were? See the PR number list on the vehicle data sticker - there should be either 8IU (DLA) or 8IT (non-DLA).

This PR list doesn't even mention headlight type, so you probably got whatever comes stock with the NAR Golf R 7.5.

Ok gotcha, just wanted to make sure. It’s not an issue, because like I said, no fault codes and the headlights do work as they should.

UPDATE:
By reaching out to a member who retrofit Mk7.5 LED headlights to his GTI, I was able to find the adaptation. It’s called “Presentation Run Dynamic AFS Light”. It looks like it’s set to “Not Active” by default on NAR 2019 Golf R’s, changing it to “active” and now the lights auto level the same way my GTI’s did.

But it does not mean they function the same way. According to your AFS control unit D6 & D7 your headlights are either 8IX or 8IU.

My guess would be that they're 8IX so no DLA. And no change to functionality even you change the presentation mode to dynamic AFS.

Because the headlights do turn with the steering wheel, automatic high beams, and cornering lights come on when I turn on my turn signal/turn the steering wheel, which is the same way my GTI functioned. The only thing I was missing was the headlights auto leveling the way they do in the video.

I did find a Youtube video of a 2019 R, and their headlights did not do the full auto-leveling presentation either. So it looks like that feature is disabled from the factory on the NAR R, whereas is standard on the GTI.

Other than that, the headlights are the same. If DLA means something else, then neither the GTI or R headlights are DLA in the US

Presentation mode will indeed turn on some more cool-looking wiggling-around at startup, that's what it means. High-beam assist will work either way, but that's not DLA.

NAR headlights don't have the shutter for DLA. You can code support for it and it'll sort of look like it's working, no fault codes, things will move around in a DLA-like fashion while you're driving, but it can't cut the notch out of the beam for cars in front of you. You don't want to configure NAR lights for that. Someday I'd like to import RoW headlamps, it's on the Round Tuit list.

Gotcha. All I was looking for was the presentation mode, I wasn’t looking to change anything else about the headlights. Thanks for your help everyone.

Late reply. Do you know if the row lights plug right in or is wiring needed? I have the coding and all part numbers the one thing I am unsure of is wiring. The guy who wrote up the guide for mk7.5 had Zenón lights so was going to led with 10 pin to 14 pin adapter. If just direct connection and some modules I will do it. If not I’ll have to figure out the wiring for my car.

I strongly suspect the connector will be the same, but I can't say whether the factory harness would have the extra wires present.

Those are assumptions; I've not checked wiring diagrams because I never got that deep into the project.
