I purchased a 2010 gti multifunction steering wheel for my 2007 vw rabbit 2 door non steering wheel controls- low line mfd. After purchase of the new airbag and installation at the dealer neither the air bag is connected nor does the horn work. I am mainly interested in the ability to adjust radio volume and change stations. I have a Kenwood DNX 892 installed but have not gotten the Crutchfield connector for the Kenwood yet.

What do I need. Attached is the VCDS printout. I have entertained the thought of replacing the instrument cluster to get hi line mfd but that would involve additional tweaks.

I don't think your Steering Wheel Module (at address 16) supports the Multi-Function Steering Wheel:
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions

Whether that's also the source of your airbag issues is questionable.

I have no idea if it's possible to make your aftermarket radio respond to the controls from the steering wheel once you upgrade the Steering Wheel Control Module. You'd need some sort of protocol converter that listens on your car's Infotainment CAN for VW's "language" and turns it into something your radio understands.

Uwe,
I looked at various sites and found that SW controller 1K0 953 549 CH might work. I would need a new air bag harness also. I do not have the part number. Regarding the radio- Crutchfield does sell a converter for VW that should work. Hopefully the clock spring will be compatible and the cruise stalk will still work. i just might get a new instrument panel to get full function from the new steering wheel.
Thanks,
Gregg

Hi Gregg,

The factory #16 module (1K0-953-549-AF ) supers to 1K0-953-549-BK which would be the best replacement module if you were installing a LIN 1.3/Mk5 steering wheel. That would be the easier way to go and MFA/MFSW controls using the DDP protocol would be compatible with the factory protocols in the comfort system, radio and instrument cluster.

Since you want to put a LIN 2.0/Mk6 wheel on the vehicle the direct replacement path won't work. You need a Highline unit that supports a Steering Angle Sensor and the proper LIN Version .. and after looking at that Wiki chart I agree with 1K0-953-549-CH. Keep in mind however that Mk6 vehicles used BAP for internal communication which may complicate things later with radio and MFA integration.

Either way - as long as the slip ring, pigtail wiring harness and Airbag type (dual versus single Igniter) are compatible with the installed #16 control module and Airbag system you shouldn't have Airbag or ABS issues.

If you haven't done so already I would consider plugging the original components back in to see if those fault codes clear:

00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - MIL ON
01587 - Igniter 2 for Airbag; Drivers Side (N250)
001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - MIL ON

If they do not clear you know something unrelated to the new parts it to blame.

Dana,

Thanks for the response. It seems that I should get a MK5 steering wheel with MF and a BK module versus a MK6 wheel with MF and a CH module- less problems with other systems.

I am mainly interested in controlling radio function- volume and program selection. Also phone call receive and initiation. Crutchfield sells an adaptor for VW for the Kenwood DNX 892 which I had installed.
Thanks,
Gregg

You will need Steering Module and clock spring , and yes 1K0 953 549 CH will work and it is best option, but Cruise control stalk has to me modified.

Do you know is your original Airbag Dual or single?

I just retrofit My car , My car was none MFSW, you can look at here:

I just completed one of these swap...

00588 - Airbag Igniter; Driver Side (N95)
001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - MIL ON

This is the only error I am left with...

Clock Spring was changed to version C revision...

MFSW is CH...

I have done this swap on my own car without issue...this is now being done on a clients car....sorry to Hi Jack the thread...hoping since we are already talking about it...

I can post a auto scan soon...

I am thinking I have a bad slip ring, but this is my second replacement, first one was china new, one after that was used, but not sure if was working...guy who sold it said it was good.

This last part is a 3D Cluster I got it working on my own car but has to be programmed with a car with a BCM after that everything works...

I am swapping Kessey and Kessey BCM next so you should see that project on here...I already did a Kessey swap on a Golf MK6 with Golf R Kessey Systsem not too bad of a job, lots of wiring lol.

Anyway I just need your opinion on that code what you guys think it could be.

On Steering module CH 2 pins missing to connect to for Clock spring. You have to see what pin goes form Air bag to clock spring , ( check continuity) and see are they go to this missing pins, if Yes , then form old Steering module you can add pin in CH.

I can do that...but its very strange this should be plug and play...

I did this on two other cars without issue...

But yes this is something to try...I did notice the spacing on the CH module for the slip ring is in a different location by spacing I min the active pins are in different locations it seems.....

I have the tool kit to pull pins...so your saying remove pins from old module transfer to new one CH?

Do you know what OHM's I should be getting on the air bag lines, resistance too high..I was reading could be a bad ground.

it should be 2.7-3 ohm.
But your faulty code telling me Airbag is not connected.
Is your original dual or single stage Airbag, and same question for SILES77?

Just realized original air bag was dual stage...this one is single stage....so I have to add a resistor to this?

Yeah Google Drive Pics Issue, will try IMGUR now

2015 Cluster
TCNRSx1

Sorry about the size...IMGUR and Google Photo is being a pain with me for some reason

Yeah but I am starting to think my issue with this car is original air bag was dual stage new one is single stage...maybe why? For resistance too high message?

I got everything else sorted ABS is fine....only issue now is it starts the initiation test for ABS but never completes it, maybe I need a bigger parking lot.

BRMTDI post your auto scan to see what codes you have.
And yes if you have dual stage airbag , you need to use solution I post link above.

I'm still confused what the solution really is...an I support to use the original air bag harness and add resistors to it...

Maybe I did not read the correct section.

Will post auto scan when I get home tonight.

I've done same mod, modded stalk and CH SWCM.

If your old bag is dual stage, then you will have to use resistor because there ISN'T NO NEWER STYLE bag with 2-stage igniter. There isn't and will never come as MK6 is outdated.
The 2 stage igniter is like 2in1 bag. Both igniters are separate units and controlled separately

We'll this car has a MK6 CC Stalk, MK6 Wheel...what did you have to do on the CH module? I am not really getting any error's on the module...the only thing I notice on it..is it missing a few pins where the old one had some for the slipring hookup..

Again as far as adding a resistor....If anyone can message or post pics of what the single stage harness needs to look like with resistors. Having a little trouble visualizing out how the wiring has to be modified.

Found this in the R32 Forums I assume I have to add resistors to this....2.2ohm?
