steering column Passat

steering column/imobilizer


Hello. still waithing for my account to get verified, so tought i give it a go here..

I got a problem with my Passat lately, and it seems this is/was a rather common problem?
It happend usually when the engine/car is warm. when try start the car it dies after like a sec and there is a beep and a message "steering column defective"
so need to try a few times and it will eventually start as normal.

Today it behaved a little diferent, as it started normal, and did not stop, but there was a beep and a message about steering column.. stopped the car with the key and started it again and all was normal, except the radio was dead.. it was also not possible to run diagnostic on it.. after disconect battery for a few minutes, it was back to normal with working radio and no message in display.. then also possible to run diagnostic.

The fault code is

02823 - Requirements for Locking the Steering Column Lock not met 000 - - - Intermittent

02861 - Electronic Steering Column Lock Check Sum Error 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermitten

02818 - Steering Column Lock; Enabling for Electronic Ignition Lock 009 - Open or Short to Ground - Intermittent

02811 - Control Module for Electronic Steering Column Lock (J764) 014 - Defective - Intermittent


So what better do first? i saw a while ago there is some repair kit on ebay with some relays and switches.. is this smth might work?
or change complete control module 764? whole steering column..? can i install used parts?
other "fix" who would work? take it to a dealer is out of the question for the moment..

A full autoscan would maybe be better since it also shows the part numbers, HW and SW versions of all modules

No, used parts don't work.

It's "possible" to replace this with VCDS also, but requires You knowing the PIN of Your car immobiliser system. Which can be extracted if you have enough knowledge in (de)soldering and resding 95cxx Eeprom.

Please ask people who make "VAG Commander".

Please post a complete Auto-Scan. What you put in post #4 above is not a complete Auto-Scan, and it's missing most of the newlines and white space, making in close to illegible.

to be honest i never used much my vag commander cable, but it should be possible to read pin etc. but first anyway should know what parts needed in this case.
yes i know a full autoscan is better, but its the only i got saved on computer.. so wil try make a complete later and put here. not sure what i did wrong sinse all the white space etc disapeared..?

got ot fixed today. folloved this video, and it turned out i got the same faulty switch as he did
so all works fine now
