Hi all,

I was wondering if any guru's were willing to lend an ear and offer insight. I've been in the process of trying to install the trailer control module from Westfalia on my car with no success.
The only step that I was able to complete successfully as per the write up here in the forums, was activating the module via VCDS.

So several issues:

1) The install manual that came with the Westfalia Trailer Module, show's the more advance 3 plug Body Control Module (BCM), that the rest of the world uses on the Jetta. Ours only comes with 2. This is a problem, as the wiring numeration is completely different. For instance they will say connect wire 52 etc to the module and wire 52 being Orange and green, but on my plug wire 52 is something completely different. So in essence, I can't even say with 100 percent certainty that I have the correct wires plugged in on the BCM plug.
Specifically for those of you who'm could provide guidance in this issue my wire's are all plugged into the white Plug on the BCM with the following numeration: The Can L (Orange and Green) is in slot #20. Can H ( Orange and Brown) Slot #21. Stop wire (black and red) Slot #50
I do have pictures of the wires in the slot's where I installed it and can also provide a scan of the page on the install manual, showing their diagram/description.

2) I also completed a scan, which pulled several errors. Two of them are explainable: Telematics my subscription ran out and the other being the dimmer switch as I had it disconnected when I did the scan. The others are not:
A) I am getting an error now for my AC/HVAC system that wasn't there before.
B) There is a Tire Pressure Monitor Error displayed and when I look, it doesn't show up as installed on my VCDS, despite my car having this feature.

Here is the scan:

Since this is primarily about the installation of a module the car din't come with, I'm moving this to Retrofits.

So for now the main thing that I suspect is the trailer module is looking for data that isn't being provided. In the trailer module, MVB 008 does show brake light switch working, but what if it expects data from something else as well when the brake pedal is stepped on?

The Central Electronics, J519, is very different in the NAR Jetta than what is installed in the Golf. This may be the reason for the problem and is a case of square peg, square hole too large.... sure it kind of works, but is a poor fit. :)

Since the NAR Jetta Sedan (GLI excluded) and NNB use a Polo based BCM I believe feedback from a similar RoW model customer that has successfully retrofitted a Trailer controller may be helpful to the OP.

Since the NAR Jetta Sedan (GLI excluded) and NNB use a Polo based BCM I believe feedback from a similar RoW model customer that has successfully retrofitted a Trailer controller may be helpful to the OP.

Update:

I found several descriptive pin outs pertaining to the BCM module used in the Mk6 Jetta, it's one of the many variants used for the Polo.

I went ahead with trying to proceed with the install, but I made a major MAJOR screw up :*(

After plugging in one of the wires into the BCM, I smelled something burning. I quickly disconnected the battery and plugged everything back the way it was, turned on the car and was greeted with a new error code:54282 - Terminal 30
U140A - 000 - Open Circuit - Intermittent - MIL ON

Interpreting this and based on the smell, I think I caused a short

I completely uninstalled the trailer module, removing all the connections to the fuse block and BCM pretty much restoring it to original and did the necessary work in VCDS but the code still shows!
So far, I haven't noticed any of the cars electrical systems malfunctioning but despite trying to clear the code, it comes back up as soon as it's cleared.

I think my next step is to try and find a VW/TDI guru that can figure out the electrical snafu that I created.

Any suggestions? I am located in Pennsylvania in the Poconos.
Oh and here is the full scan, just in case this helps in finding a quick fix (doubtful)

Yea I checked all of the fuses in the block by the drivers footwell and all were good, but oddly enough there are about 5 different fuses that aren't getting power to them when I try it with the test light.

I didn't try the block in the engine compartment, as I was beyond frustrated..Decided to call it quits for the day. I'll check those tomorrow.

**UPDATE**

SHE"S ALIVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Lol. Sorry for the all caps, but I am quite excited that my cars electrical isn't fried as I was worried. I checked all of the fuses again, including those in the engine compartment. All were good, but then I noticed that the negative terminal was sitting on the upper half of the pole, as opposed to being all the way down. Well I corrected the issue, tightened the nut and boom fired the car up and no CEL! :) :) :) :) :) :)

This means that this 2 month Westfalia wiring project can continue...Well now with even more caution :)

My next course of action is to call Westfalia's towbar help line, being that they're in the UK I have to wait until tomorrow morning.

I am quite confident I will get this unit working..I've done wayyyyy too much research and disassembling/re-assembling the dash to quit now.

My Google searches have revealed that as suspected, we do in fact have VW Polo esq electrics. Now it gets further complicated, as there are a few variants of the POLO BCM: Highline etc. Our's is a bit of a hybrid of highline + and Medium++ from research has yielded.
I found a pin out for the 2012 Jetta SE that, using the Polo as a reference but my year and variant it seems has an updated/revised/different BCM

I was able to kind of figure out the pins, by also referencing the Polo pin out and the beetle, which is very similar to the 2014 NA TDI. Erwin's wiring schematics were of help in doing so as well, in reference to the fuse block.

Now I think I know where my hiccup was/is, in that the brake switch wasn't detected by the module and I suspect that it had to do with the incorrect pinout being used on the BCM. I think I found the correct one, but the problem is, is that it's one of the bigger plugs and doesn't fit into the supplied adapter in the kit to tie it into the module. *( I know, confusing.I will make sure to clean up the thread and post pictures once I am done).

I am hoping that my phone call with Westfalia will either confirm that this is the pin out, that way I can fabricate a connector or they tell me no but point me towards the right direction.

Fingers crossed, will keep you all posted.

Pretty much I think I just need to figure out which is the "stop" wire on my BCM and tap the module into it.

So I spoke with Westfalia today and they were able to offer support, albeit limited. He did however confirm that I do in fact have the correct connections for the Can HI and Low wires and that I need to do further coding with VCDS. The fact that the module was able to be activated and seen by VCDS confirms that the correct can wires are connected. He also agreed that the problem that I am having is that in finding the correct wire to tie into the module labeled "stop". On my pin out there isn't a wire/connection labeled so, on the 3 prong and euro style BCM's there is one however. This problem isn't unique to the NAR Jetta, as the variants in Germany have different wording and connections from the rest of Europe.
The solution he presented is to find the output wire for the brake switch signal, which I did, confirm that it's so by having a circuit tester on it and seeing if it lights when the brake pedal is pressed. I am pretty sure which wire this is and if it's so, will require me to hack it a little bit and do some soldering as on our BCM this plug is larger than the supplied connectors for the module.

I won't be able to attempt this until the weekend, but I hope to have it all done soon!

Will keep all posted.

Update**
As of 9:30 PM this evening, I think I finally did it!!!

The module was recognized by Vag Com before even activating it it was turned on in the gateway list, that didn't happen before.

I took plenty of pictures. The next step is to call the lovely folks at Ross Tech first thing Monday morning in regards to the coding for the ABS to activate Trailer ESP. Then modify the 13 pin uk plug to a US 7 or flat 4.

I will post an in depth write up with pictures, exclusively on this site. The other forum that I participate in didn't help or even respond (with the exception of a single member via PM)

I don't think there's much sense calling about the ABS coding; they're not going to be able to build you a coding for that over the phone.

Post up an Auto-Scan when you get it as clean as possible.

:( Serious! Darn, I was really excited for it. Is there further testing or anything that I can do to verify this?

From our wiki page:

Your ABS module is a MK60EC1. I'm not the greatest expert on the MK60EC1, but there may not be Trailer ESP with your ABS control module.

Hey sorry for not replying sooner, but I found out that the Mk60EC1 does in fact support TESP. I will include all of this in the write up. Should I do the write up in this thread or start a new one?

Ok, so after months of trying to install this bad boy its all over! First I would like to give thanks to a few folks, that without their help I would still be trying to do this. Uwe, Jeff and the other Ross-Tech employees that took the time to answer my questions and offer a sense of direction when needed. GJAS18 from tdiclub.com get's a special thanks, as he really took a lot of time in explaining and offering advice in doing this. He'd done it in his car, a mk6 golf, that has a different BCM but nonetheless he was a great deal of help. He was in fact the only person who did so from that site. I'd also like to thank Westfalia as well. On the advice of Ross-tech employee, I went ahead and called them. I didn't expect much as here I was calling from the US for a product that most likely doesn't see much application here stateside; my assumptions were proven wrong. They helped me in figuring out the final piece of the puzzle in getting this going in my car. So for starters a few things: This install documents the steps needed to take to get the Westfalia 13 pin UK trailer module installed on the NAR Mk6 Jetta. model number: 321600300153. I am doing this write up as I haven't been able to find any documenting a successful install into a NAR MK6 Jetta. The ones that I have seen were from older models that had identical BCMs to their EU counterparts. Our BCM on the Mk6 Jetta is closer in relation to the Polo, but that is confusing in itself as there are several variants of the Polo BCM: Base + Medium + Medium ++ and High +The installation instructions aren't helpful in installing into our BCM as we have a unique unit of sorts. It's a hybrid of the Polo BCM Medium + and High +.

Despite the extremely month(s) long install process for me, frankly it's an easy job. I would highly recommend anyone considering towing with their Jetta to go this route. With this write up it should only take you 2 hours tops to do the electrics. Do note, that this kit doesn't support LED lighting in the canbus system, meaning the lights WILL work on the trailer but you will have the annoying light out indicator on your dash anytime you hook up an LED lighted trailer. Also, I would like to confirm that with ABS Module MK60EC1 we do in fact have Trailer ESP with the system; GJas18 offered an explanation on how to check for it. I have one last step to complete on my end for the module install and that is for the installation of a brake controller to the module, which GJas explained is possible. I will add this into the write up once I get around to doing so. This install will cover the steps necessary to do so, after the wire's have been ran up to the dash and you've taken the lower dash apart (not a hard job)...If you need help in figuring this out, let me know and I can offer insight. Again, this write up is for the install on the NAR Mk6 Jettas with the BCM PQ25. 2 Large connector with 73 pins. If you have a Golf with the 3 large plugs, look up the write up GJAS18. It's very comprehensive and straight forward.

Assuming you have already ran the wires from the hitch, through the module and up to the drivers compartment and lower drivers side dash completely removed is where my instructions begin.

*** Please note, disconnect the negative terminal from your battery before disconnecting the BCM and messing with the fuses!!***

Our BCM as noted, has 2 large plugs each with 73 pins. One plug being black in color (Labeled A) the other white in color (Labeled B).
We will be working with both plugs, but for the sake of keeping sanity work on one plug at a time.

Essentially there are 3 wires that go from the trailer module to the cars wiring harness, which we will pull from their perspective pins from the BCM plugs, which are then pigtailed into the trailer module and plugged back into the BCM plugs.
The installation booklet that comes with the harness refers to the 3 wires in question as Can Hi (Orange and green wire) Can L (Orange and brown) and STOP (Black and Red). This proved to be confusing as there are 3 sets of can hi/ Can l wires on our BCM with identical colors... the 3 are: Convenience/Comfort, Powertrain and Diagnosis. We will be working with the convenience or comfort can wires. Also, the wire that they refer to as 'Stop' proved to be the most confusing. Our BCM doesn't have a pin out labeled so, and after doing countless google searches and reading, I came to find out that the pin out in question on our BCM is that of the brake pedal position sender input signal, aka the 'Stop' Wire

Step 1:
Remove the 2 screws holding the fuse block and set the block to the side

Step 2:
The BCM is located behind the fuse block. Simply feel around for it, it's a large flat object and push up and it should come down.
It should look like this (Take note of the 2 plugs, both color and labels below).
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/axi8bdht2qxdyq0dei5tpeizyw9c14t6

Step 3:
Remove the white plug (BCM B), by simply pressing on the tab in the front and the carrier should unlock. Slide it forward until the plug comes out. Once it's out it should look like this:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/h7qqf2fx6hy3p997mes4z17lm98e70gl

Step 4:
Now that you have removed it, looking at the back of the plug you should see 2 tiny black tabs. Press on both tab with your fingernail, you can do one at a time, to slide the actual connectors out of the housing. It should resemble this after you have done so:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/7mm5t22ohdymz9usieefq1wts40616ax

Step 5:
Slide the 2 connectors apart and look for the connector with pin #20 and 21, these are the comfort can hi and can low wires.
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/6aj911fwvfp5in8mxnlngh9humlbthca

Step 6:
We will be removing pin 20, which is your can H wire (orange and green). Use a terminal tool to press on the small metal tab to get it to slide out:
Picture: https://app.box.com/s/daac26hohuvlewt2sbsczuti5zwepia6

Step 7:
In the box that the trailer module came in, there should be a small black adapter with 3 ports. This adapter will tie in the can-h and can-l wires into the trailer module. In this picture you will see this plug and below it the can-h & can-l wire with the female end coming from the trailer module:
Picture: https://app.box.com/s/z59vzmq6puu95nfyc2x8h0s8wohfkf89

Step 8:
On that adapter which the can-H and can L wires coming from the bcm will go into, we will work with only 2 of the 3 pin holes (3 and 1) #2 is a blank. With a small screw driver or fingernail, pop open the connector and slide in your can H wire from the car into pin #3 into the connector (blurry but you get the point)
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/o44b8g1d4oz8b2g287z2n7h5a5x3ad38

Step 9:
After doing so, take the orange and green (can H wire) coming from the module pigtail and plug it into the bcm pin out in which you removed the original (pin 20)
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/hqjpgc862mhyfac8pxx5xhei7zy6vdhx

Step 10:
Take the same steps as you did for the can H wire from the bcm, but now for the can L wire, which is pin # 21 on the BCM plug and it's orange and brown in color. For the sake of thread space I will exclude the pictures. Make sure that you plug the original wire can L pin #21 into pin #1 in the adapter that goes into the trailer module. pin 2 is a blank and wont do anything.

After you've done that you should have this:

We are done with BCM plug B (white plug), so now you can slide the 2 connectors together and then put the 2 connectors back into the white housing plug. Do note, that the plug with the connectors and housing should pop back in very easily into the BCM. You shouldn't have to force it. I found that slight pressure towards the top/front of the plug will get it to pop it to where you see the carriage slide forward.

Step 11:
Take the same steps as we did with BCM plug B, but now for plug A the black one.

Step 12:
Once you have taken the housing off and split the 2 connectors apart, we will be looking for pin # 43, which is your brake pedal position sender input signal, or the "Stop" wire as the install refers to it. This wire is black and red:

Step 13: Slide the pin out using the same method as described above. Next look for the white adapter that came in the box with the harness. Insert the brake pedal wire (pin 43) in the middle pin of this connector:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/94orznet2m3cdiholwqbyygzup6fgnl4

Then plug in the adapter into the male with the same color wiring coming from the trailer module like so:

Step 14: Plug in the black and red wire from the pigtail coming from the trailer module into the empty pin 43.
Re-assemble the 2 connectors, slide it back into the housing and plug it back into the BCM.
You should now look like this:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/55j5jfxep4x9tisaxl3x72w47pn86l5j

Do note, that you will have a slight resemblance to spaghetti with the wiring. Use the zip ties included in the install kit to tighten everything up.

You can now put the BCM back into the holder in which you originally removed it from.

Next is the fuse panel:
Do note, that the install should be the same but I am not 100 percent sure the fuse panels are the same from all the Mk6 jetta models. My fuse panel has 60 fuses

Step 1:
Looking at the back of the fuse panel, there is a cover which simply slides down:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/l1i2s20elen4ge59oyq9nvxo2e1ex8r0

You should see this when you remove the cover:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/i033h9ruqgibo5jgfsn47zp7hezujz8s

Step 2:
We will first start by working with fuse number 40, 41, and 42 all of which are currently blank. After installing the wires to each we will then plug in the supplied fuses that came with the kit.

Step 3:
Take the 3 wires that come from the trailer module, they should be a red and blue , red and black and red wire and plug them in on the left side of the pins.
Red and blue pin 40, red and black 41, and red 42. Should look like this:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/3pz08zwb30r4hxgj47dh3c1yjz0ug5hb

Step 4:
Next take the supplied pigtail wire out of the box with the install kit. It's 3 wires, that go into one connector. The 3 wires are the same color as the one we plugged in the previous. Take each wire and plug in parallel to the ones we plugged in above (40,41,42).

Should look like this
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/soaln444k5itc0ymudwbu9ycm63plu2p

Step 5:
A few spaces above pin 40 you should see a bare metal connector with a thick red wire running through it, plug in your pigtail end into this metal connector:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/ry7zqgjqkhg12szkph8cru2xt8c7dxea

After wards everything should look like this:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/p38vq9wv0lrsv8vholpp0nsbeh981dnm

Step 6:
We are almost done!! Now turn the fuse panel over to where you're looking at the fuses. Remove fuse number 14 (10Amp) as we will need to remove one of the wires that run to it:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/k10pqfvcucbh93km4p778zd4dtwf7c66

Step 7:
Turn the fuse panel to look at the back. The wire that runs to this fuse number is hard to see, but it's a black and purple wire. In order to remove it, you will need to unlock the wires. There is a small magenta colored plastic tab that holds all of the wires. Take a flat screw drive and push up on it from the bottom. (hard to see but look closely at the bottom for a small magenta colored tab):
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/vjsbx7raehkf3pm1mzu99jkvytrxz2tq

It should pop up and then slide it out completely:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/o28amu5yu3ror1lgnmkocjdd84qk3lxu

Step 8:
Remove the black and purple wire from the fuse block
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/gf4du2y07ijvgn04bkebvgha6icjcear

Step 9:
Plug in the wire you just removed into the connector supplied in the install kit. Do take note of the orientation of the wire going into the plug in this picture:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/acgszo1zahjj80w8iv76g9945rdkbuek

Step 10:
Now take the black and blue wire that comes off the connector of the wire running from the trailer module and connect into the spot where you removed the black and purple wire from.
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/6cxj6x7v1zqk51lz83y6yh7pl6wfrd1x

and then plug in the black and purple wire which you put into the supplied connector and plug it into the female adapter coming from the trailer module. Then, slide the magenta colored fuse holder back into place until you hear it click

Should all look like this:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/gay05kysu1w5e3xm1nyl497678awijor

Step 11:
Turn back over the fuse block where you're looking at the fuses and plug in the supplied fuses into the spaces: Fuse 40, 41, 42 take the supplied 15 amp fuses and fuse 14 now takes a smaller 5amp fuse

You should now have this:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/6tly6krymr437sm8pd7f6tfynn604dxq
And this:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/i2vmcm04i3rflaoxhasfq1f0wew5aqf3

Now you can slide back on the rear cover of the fuse panel. Do take care in doing so, as now you have more wires than you did before.

You will also have an excessive amount of wire coming from the harness of the trailer module. Simply coil it and zip tie it and then stuff into the trim where you ran it through.

Put the fuse panel back in place, but don't put the screws back in or put back the driver side lower dash just yet! Just in case you did something wrong and need to correct it. You should look like this now with the BCM and Fuse panel back in place and wires tucked away:
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/fbgqghj662iau9a4ob343imrfnxlfour

Now you can go and re-connect the negative battery terminal. Make sure to seat it all the way and tighten it. Start up the car and move the steering wheel all the way to the left and then to the right to clear the lights you will have on the dash.

Next is VCDS:
**Make sure you do an auto-scan before making any changes and save it!!***

Step 1
Open up auto scan and click gateway installation list. Believe it or not the car will now recognize that you have the module installed but that it's not activated/registered yet. You will have a few malfunctions showing up. They are related to the unregistered module and your dimmer switch being disconnected.
Picture: https://app.box.com/embed/preview/jz5prjnuq5m4ly684fcy0juwdaq267ns

Step 2:
You will open up the can gateway and go to installation list.

Step 3: Scroll down and look for the check box for #69 labeled trailer. Check this box and click save.

Step 4: go back to the auto scan page and click gateway installation again. You should now see that the trailer module is recognized, but we are not done yet!

Step 5: Open the trailer module and go to coding -07
Once there go to line 1 and change that to North America coding (Change to 3) and line 3 to 2. Line 3 should already by default be set to this.

Now you can re-assemble everything. After wards go back into VCDS do a scan, save it and then clear it. You should no longer have any codes.

CONGRATS you now have Euro style trailer harness capabilities, which do in fact include T-ESP!!!

GJAS18 explained to me the following "Also on the ABS thing anything post 2007 is required by law in Europe to automatically detect the trailer. There is no coding of the ABS module required unless it is older than that. One way you can check is open the ABS controller with VCDS and hit advanced measurements. Scroll through the list and you should see something about a trailer connection, when you connect your tester to the trailer harness it should change to "yes" or "connected". This tells you the ABS controller recognizes there is a trailer attached to the car. "

I did confirm this to be true on my car.

Next step is to create your own wiring harness from the 13 pin uk system to in my case, a US flat 4. The trailer that I will most likely be using will have a flat 4 connector. Unless if you're running a bigger trailer with electric brakes, which I will in the future, most likely this will be what you need.

Go to any auto part store and buy a 4 way flat connector harness that states from the car. You will also need to purchase a 13 pin adapter such as this one:
http://www.amazon.com/docooler-Trailer-13-Pole-Connector-Caravan/dp/B00S97S56C

Do note, that for the 4 way flat connector harness make sure that you DON'T purchase one with built in test lights. The built in test lights are LEDS and the trailer module that we installed doesn't support LED bulb monitoring. If you plug this type of connector in you will have the bulb out indicator lit up on your dash every time you plug it in.

The wiring for the 4 flat connector is easy. Ground wire is pin#3 in the UK adapter, left turn signal #1, right turn signal #4 and tail/marker lights is #5

That's all folks!

I hope that this write up helps you all in getting this cool retrofit done. I've seen a lot of write ups where folks have decided to go with the splice and dice method with converters...Not worth it if you ask me. Apart from having hacked up wires, you miss out on all of the cool features of the trailer module.
Like I said before, after doing this and with this write up I am confident anyone can get the job done in 2 hours or less.

Also, please excuse the sloppy write up. I am a new dad to a 1 month old that decided she'd scream her head off the last 3 nights...Running on fumes!!! :(

I will update once I complete the brake controller on my end.
