Resolved MK60EC1 ABS Problems

Hello, first post, but am at a loss. Have a 2010 Golf GTI in the shop. It was diagnosed some time back as needing a new ABS module. I have done a couple of these before without a problem. The problem I am having is on Channel 026. No errors and able to use the brake pedal to match what the value the software is displaying. Was able to calibrate channel 025 in less than 5 mins. Have tried doing the calibration on Channel 026 multiple times without it ever completing. Today we ran the calibration for 20 mins without success. Below is the last Scan. No visible brake fluid leaks. Bled a second time and the rear pads are worn to the thickness of the pad backing plate. Waiting on the engine and ECU to cool again. I have seen where others have had this same problem, but no solutions I could find. Using a Ross Tech dongle and current VCDS software. Thank you for any assistance.

It probably won't make any difference, but please clarify which Ross-Tech cable you are using (HEX-CAN, HEX-V2, HEX-NET,...) and the software you are using is actually a year old - the latest version is 22.10 (updates are free to registered users).

Thank you for taking the time to reply. After posting yesterday, I bled the hydraulic brake system another time. Upgraded the software to the current version. To eliminate heat build up, used a vacuum pump to assist the booster so I could run the test without the engine running. Once again only 025 would complete. 20 mins for 026 and it never completed. It does seem to repeat 3 combinations after a point. I’ve also seen <000 000> but no “calibrated”. To eliminate the laptop and VCDS software, used our Alltel scanner. Same result. 025 calibrates. 026 never calibrates and is an endless loop. One more thing I noticed is the On/Off/Next button does not end the calibration routine after 025 completes. I have to exit. Shutdown the car. Restart the car. Security login and then basic settings 026 again. The On/Off/Next button works to start the calibration just as with 025. I did come across a note regarding this.

I’ll post which dongle I am using when I get in later this am. As far as the version, I’m often prompted to update, but don’t always have a vehicle to connect to to complete the install. Watching updates, it seems to delete existing files and install replacements. On more than one occasion I updated and sure enough the next vehicle doesn’t connect. It’s rare and we work on some vanagons with TDI conversions.

I’m leaning towards a problem with the new module. I did not install the new one. I was just asked to program it. I’m wondering if the correct module was ordered. Unfortunately I can’t see the part number label installed, but will compare the original ECU to the part number on the box. I’ll update what I find this am. I’ll also post a new auto scan. I’m also thinking about plugging in the original ECU and running auto scan again. Also bleeding the brakes, I noticed the rear pads are worn to the thickness of the brake pad backing. The owner tows this car behind a motorhome. He has a brake pedal actuator on the floor. The motor home has an ECU to operate a vacuum pump to assist the servo and operates the brake pedal under braking. It’s independent of the vehicle CAN system. Thanks again. Mark

You don't need to be connected to a vehicle to do an update, you just need an internet connection and the VCDS cable plugged into the PC - no need for it to be connected to a vehicle.

Ok, the Dongle is Ross Tech HEX + CAN Dual -K CAN USB. After the software update, you are required to test and save the connection. So, the connection is to the dongle not the actual communication to the vehicle. I'll have to try that next time.

Still scratching my head and thinking outside the box. I did find one thing that was missed. The ECU was ordered by application. It was not ordered by part number. The original ECU part number is 1K0 907 379 AH. The replacement ECU part number on the box is 1K0 907 375 AH. I cannot see the module label with the ECU module installed. I am working between a laptop and posting on my workstation.

Google searching I don't see that that one supersedes the other. In fact, my experience the higher number would be the newer one. But here is where it gets confusing. I checked my original scan and then my last scan. For some reason, the ECU part number looks identical in both scans. Would long coding change the ECU part number? There does seem to be 2 different revision numbers in the two scans. We can remove the module and visually check the part number to be sure, but the owner needs to leave the beginning of next week and I doubt we could even get the correct ECU and if that is even going to fix the problem. Could there be a physical problem that would allow 025 to complete, but not 026?

So, don't worry about the part numbers on the box? I'm drawing straws at this point. Looking for anything that may have been missed.

To clarify, I cannot complete the channel 026 calibration Hydraulic Unit Disconnecting Valves. I'm using this documentation for coding and setting ABS module. Brake Electronics I've also watched the Ross Tech YouTube video a few times. I'm open to suggestions at this point. Thank you. Mark

Hello, 026 does not complete. No error. Have attempted to calibrate 5 times over 3 days. Have done each attempt for 20 mins. The software keeps offering pressure values to hit. After the value is hit with the pedal pressure, a new range is offered. After a long period of time, we notice it seems to offer the same 3 ranges.
I had the tech check that the pipes were in the correct ports. She took a picture before removing them.
I could post a screenshot, but it looks exactly like in the video. Where do I upload a photo to link? Don’t seem to have the option to insert a photo from my iPhone.

The problem is I don’t know enough about how it calibrates to mechanically find something wrong. I know it’s not the communication or the software because I replicated it with our Autell scope. Same result 025 completes. 026 would run all day. Seems from reading 5 mins should be adequate, but 20 min attempts to be sure.

For pictures I could see they needed to be hosted offsite. Other forums don’t like when members link off site for photos. The links can break, which renders some threads useless.

On my phone, imgur doesn’t appear to be a photo storage. It looks like some sort of “feed” I’ll look for a solution this am.

As far as the actual problem. Ross tech has a how to video for basic settings channel 025 and 026. I’m seeing in my software exactly what is in the video with the exception of 2 problems. 026 never completes. 025 does complete. The other problem is the “on/off/next” button only turns the calibration on for either channel. It does not turn off when clicked after 025 completes.

Which just goes to prove that your iPhone is a poor substitute for a real computer. Why not do this from the computer you're using for VCDS? Alt+PrintScreen will copy the active window to the clipboard, from where you can past it straight into Imgur.

The correct part number of the ABS module that you need and what the vehicle should have is :1K0907375AH. What you have installed is 1K0907379AH. It is a direct replacement as far as I know. Are you sure your holding steady pressure with no leaks?? I have seen people cross thread the fittings on the abs block numerous times.

The picture was taken by the phone, not for upload. The picture was for another reason. Thank you for moving and linking. I’ve been using VCDS for years. This was the first time I needed a login for the forum. So, I apologize for not being an expert out of the gate. Also. the owner wants their car back. It was supposed to be quick turn around. So I’m under pressure this time.

As far as brake fluid leaks. I checked the fittings and they are dry. I also inspected the underside to see if maybe ecu didn’t seal to the valve body. Nothing dripping. I also bled the brakes a second time so I could see that all air is removed. I didn’t install the module.

As far as the part number. The box had the label for 375 AH stuck over another label but the software was reporting 379 AH for both ECUs. I did not see the part number on the ECU before it was installed. From memory the ECU is ATE, but made in China. At this point I am suspect of the new part. While not happy, the owner is leaving with the car and will live with the traction control error light. They were more concerned that the airbags were disabled by the communication issue with the ABS. That seems to be resolved. I feel bad, but they live 5 hours away. I don’t like giving up on a problem. I’ve never let a vehicle beat me. We are going to look into a complete assembly tomorrow. The unbilled time would likely have covered the cost of a complete assembly. Thank you to those that did try to contribute.

This was the first time I needed a login for the forum. So, I apologize for not being an expert out of the gate. Also. the owner wants their car back. It was supposed to be quick turn around. So I’m under pressure this time.

As far as brake fluid leaks. I checked the fittings and they are dry. I also inspected the underside to see if maybe ecu didn’t seal to the valve body. Nothing dripping. I also bled the brakes a second time so I could see that all air is removed. I didn’t install the module.

As far as the part number. The box had the label for 375 AH stuck over another label but the software was reporting 379 AH for both ECUs. I did not see the part number on the ECU before it was installed. From memory the ECU is ATE, but made in China. At this point I am suspect of the new part. While not happy, the owner is leaving with the car and will live with the traction control error light. They were more concerned that the airbags were disabled by the communication issue with the ABS. That seems to be resolved. I feel bad, but they live 5 hours away. I don’t like giving up on a problem. I’ve never let a vehicle beat me. We are going to look into a complete assembly tomorrow. The unbilled time would likely have covered the cost of a complete assembly. Thank you to those that did try to contribute.

Honestly if the old module had failed. I think your best bet would of been to send the original out for a rebuild. There is a few place that rebuild these units. Hell I used to rebuild them myself at one point. However I suspect its possible you have a ABS unit thats been reflashed with the correct part number for the vehicle but was originally a different unit possibly with different components inside.

I was dragged in just to code the new one. Should have been an hour max. It was diagnosed back in July not by me the last time the car was in the area. The module had been ordered back then. Having the car down was just not an option at the time. They come to this area a few times a year. Basically a perfect storm brewing for 6 months. I don’t believe the replacement module came direct from VW. The original could be sent out now. I see rebuilders on the internet, but a recommendation of a good rebuilder would be helpful. If I can get one more day, I’d like to pull it back out. Note the number on the case, but separate it and check the valve movement. Also ensure all the seals seated correctly. It’s not easy to just walk away for me. Thanks for the information. Mark

Edit: Ran the car and exercised the ABS system. Under braking system is fine. Reran basic setting 025 logged in and it completed again. Logged back in and ran 026 calibration again. Never did complete. Was thinking maybe hammering the ABS might have put it in the mood. No luck.

Car left today with the traction control warning light on. No other issues and all the ECUs are communicating. Plan is to send the original out for refurb. Still open to recommendations. I’m sure there are many degrees of refreshed. Will install it next time the owner is in the area and will try to remember to update this thread. Thanks Mark

Update, the shop ordered a brand new pump and ECU assembly from the dealer. The customer is back to have it installed. I scanned prior to the shop replacing the pump and ECU. Out of caution, I have multiple copies of the long coding for the ABS module. Went to code the new blank module and got an error that the long code was too long. Sure enough it appears to be 2 digits longer than the factory blank code. We did not have this problem last time. Checking the scans from last fall, this am and now, the original ECU and the replacement ECU were both Revision H31001. The one we installed today that won't accept the original code is Revision H45001. I manually counted the zeros for the blank ECU and count 36. When I count the original code is has 38 values. The last 2 are 00 so I tried deleting the last 2 and get a different error when I commit the change. It seems my code is not compatible with the newer Revision. It is also a different part number. I am pasting just the Brake Section of the Scan.

It would seem this is either newer or wrong. If the newer version is an update, there must be a way to convert the long code to work. We have a call into the dealer to see if this is a supersede an if so, can they code it? I don't know the long coding well enough to attempt it manually. Anyone come across this?
