VW Transporter T6.1 2021 Wheel size coding changes issue

Hiya folks!

A customer of mine changed his wheels to 20" and wanted his speedo coded to suit the new wheel size.

No issue as this is an available change via the "K-Number" coding in 17 Instrument Cluster and done this many times in older Transporters and Amaroks.

Well, turns out there is an issue. You can change the coding up but not back down the sizes. In the T6.1 it's no longer called "K-Number" but "Variant" and runs numerically (1-8 or 0-8, I cant remember) and as we were checking the MM sizes in Advanced measuring, we changed it up too far and decided to revert to the last coding as it was the closest to what the customer wanted and was met with "Coding Rejected Error 22: Conditions Not correct or Request Sequence Error"

I also tried to revert the coding via ODIS online (genuine VAS6154 and legit GeKo access etc) and this also failed. So I am thinking that there is something else that needs to happen first before it will let me change the coding back.

The battery was removed to see if that rest the system to allow the coding changes but no help and thats where some of the new errors came from but since the coding changes the ACC no longer works in gears 5 & 6. I recall seeing an odd issue with one "K-Number" setting in the T5.1/T6 where the gear selection symbol in the DIS was incorrect for 5 & 6. So I am guessing this is the same issue but now as an added bonus it kicks out the ACC in those gears too. Works fine in 1-4 though.

So the question is, how to change the "Variant" coding in 17 back?

Did you have joy with this at all? I've noticed the same issue, I had put 245/65 17 tyres on and changed this to sort out the speedo. That all worked fine but just moved to a smaller tyre as others were too big and can't change this option back, same error. Fortunately ACC still works but speedo is way out.....

Whenever Coding or Adaptation changes are made, a Shop ID must be sent along with those changes and are recorded by the module. By default, VCDS will try to put back whatever is already there ("Stealth Mode"), but that isn't always acceptable to the module.

The question here is what tool put all (binary) 1s on those fields? That isn't something VCDS does.

The shop change is likely due to me using my ODIS access to re-code 17 online but without success (came back NOT OK and refused to change the coding back to factory).

That'll be my ODIS (VAS6154)

I'm thinking about flashing the software on the unit (haven't checked if I have the file for it actually) but unsure on if that will reset the coding back to zero ready for online coding? Not been in this situation before so unsure on what the outcome will be.

Looking online, there are a few others that have fallen foul of this issue but no sign of a solution yet.

I've been busy getting a bench test set up done for MIB software repairs so not returned to this issue for a few days.

Hiya Don, long time no speak, I hope you and your family are well.

Quite right, changing the wheel circumference coding has clearly upset the Distance Regulation module, I suspected they are tied in along with the ABS and they use the tyre size to calculate stopping distance etc.

But the I remembered something, not obvious on these scans nor in the T6.1 17 module but the coding for this on T5.1 and T6 are also labelled for vehicle type too. Amarok and Polo come to mind, maybe others too. Also worth noting the gear information error on the dash too, this will likely be the real reason why the ACC doesn't work but I am stumped as to how to get it changed back without replacing the entire Instrument cluster.

I know this is now a pretty old thread, but I'm looking at doing this change on my MY22 Transporter 6.1. If I understand correctly from this thread, then changing the IDE00845 wheel circumference variant value (Bit 0-2) is only possible in one direction, i.e. increase the value? My van started life as a Startine with 205/65/16 tyres and hence the variant is currently showing as 'Variant 1'. I've now got 275/40/20's and the speedo is out by about 5mph at 70mph. Am I right in saying I can safely move up to variant 2 and this will increase the circumference and reduce the error?

Hiya Jimmy,

So you can move the circumference upwards but not down. Just to advise that not all variants are available to select so I would advise to measure the real circumference of your tyres and then check which variant will give you the desired result. As per factory, all speedos over-read so don't worry if you choose one that reads % over as that is normal (you can verify your real road speed via GPS).

Regulations require that speedos over-read (never under-read) by up to 10%, so most manufacturers ship cars with speedo that over-read by around 5% to allow for tyre lifetime variations.

My wheel circumference is 2287mm according to willtheyfit.com, so the next question is does anyone know what circumference each variant equates to? Given that I can only increase the variant number, I don't want to go too far and not be able to revert to a lower value. I guessing it's only possible to see the circumference value in VCDS once it's been set and therefore it's too late to go backwards if the value ends up being too large.

@JimmyAK : hmm......... isn't there a very logical methodology that could be adopted to solve your dilemma? Like this:

Known Conditions:
  • You can reasonably assume that options with increasing "Version Numbers" relate to increasing tire circumference.
  • You have been advised that changes to Byte 3 are only permitted in one direction
  • In your case, the tire-circumference has increased
Methodology:
  • Starting with the existing option - change to the next highest "Version number"
  • Drive the car with this setting and compare instrument cluster speed with GPS speed
  • Is the variance less than 5% - meaning, is instrument cluster speed no more than 5% lower than GPS speed?
  • If yes, correct "Version number" - If no, select the next higher "Version Number" and repeat GPS comparison
What have I missed?

PS: There is some intelligence on the screen-shot in the video below (see reference to PR numbers - yes, different hex17 module, but it's likely to have the same decoding options)

That's on the assumption that VAG acted reasonably and logically when allocating "Version Numbers".

Consider this scenario - marketing decide to sell into a country where consumers don't want large wheels (due to e.g. rough roads) so they need to allocate a new "Version Number" for a smaller wheel/tyre combination, but want to do this in a way that does not change the existing "Version Numbers" so they allocate the next sequential "Version Number" for a smaller wheel/tyre combination than one (or more) of the existing combinations. Result? - non-monotonic increase in wheel/tyre size with increasing "Version Number".

I can confirm that they absolutely did not operate via normal logic when assigning circumference to the K-numbers lol. There will be some Method to their madness but we are left to guess.

In some instances the circumference didn’t go up totally in order and some SW versions it actually decreased with higher K-numbers so there doesn’t seem to be any consistency.

The only advice I can give is to do it step by step and with each change, check the MM in adaptations to see what it’s reading (IDE00845 I think?) and see.

Thanks PetrolDave, that’s is EXACTLY my concern. As Don pointed out, the logical thing to do would be just to step up through the variants measuring speed until you get near enough. That’s what I was planning to do, but what if my logic doesn’t apply the the circumferences jump around? Then I might be stuck with a higher variant that I am unable to revert. And there doesn’t seem to be any variant = circumference values floating around for the T6.1 that I can find.

They do and don’t jump around. It varies depending on year and SW version of the instrument cluster. You will find that there won’t be a table of values that will apply to all T6.1s.

Not all variants are available for every vehicle so some won’t be selectable on your cluster.
