No start. Scan with VCDS does show fault code for failed G28. Multimeter test shows failed sensor. Pin 2 - 3 show infinite resistance. specified 480 - 1000 ohms. short pin 1 - 3. pin 3 - 2 infinite resistance. Question: Why no DTC are shown? Is the programing code in the ECU corrupted?

Even though no fault codes are shown a full unedited VCDS Auto-Scan is needed as this will help the experts answer your questions.

BTW has your Passat been 'chip tuned' (either by you or any previous owner)? This can often be the cause of DTCs not being shown.

These two statements seem contradictory. Perhaps you could elaborate?

Hi Uwe,
Sorry my mistake . It should read does not show DTC.

I know the crankshaft sensor is defective because I tested it with a multimeter. But I do not understand why VCDS does not show any DTC related to this failed sensor (G28)

Hi PetrolDave,
The ECU is stock. It is not tuned. I am the original owner. The ECU was flashed by the dealer so that the 5 volt steel tip glow plugs could be switched out for the 7 volt ceramic tip glow plugs I believe on a recall.
Thanks.

Hi Jack,
Here is the attached scan. Please ignore the fault codes as I have taken things apart to replace crankshaft speed sensor. Tomorrow I will see if I can get the passat to start. Too dark now to see.
Thanks,
P. Hall

So car is modified with delete FOD tuning?

Did you log G28 in VCDS when cranked?

Hi Jack,
No, car ECU is not modified. The ecu is stock. Not sure what you mean by log G28 when cranked. The car is in a no start condition.
Thanks ,
P. Hall

That's debatable Phall ----- US or Canada OBD2 Specs say otherwise!
Clear faults and post a new complete auto-scan unedited please, did you know your thread is inconsistent as Uwe has aforementioned?

Subsystem Redundancy check for FOD in process!

Better JPPSG huh?

G28 is the "engine speed sensor" or "RPM ref sensor" when referencing the RTFB ( Read The Factory Book ) in WD = Wire Diagrams!

Seems unlikely that VAG would use this as the revision code, which makes Jacks suggestion that the ECU has been modified seem very probable.

That and the fact the EGR is ready & before the engine even runs to check it or after re-flash!

This is what is NOT displayed!

Are you going to log G28 OP?

Hi Uwe,
The ECU was reflashed at the VW dealer for the 5 Volt glow plugs. As far as I am aware I have never had the ECU tune or flashed. I wonder if the VW dealer made some sort of error.
Regards,
P. Hall
