2010 Audi Q5 3.2 cranks, but won't fire. No codes.. Which VCDS tests can I run?

I'm not sure what tests I can inside VCDS for this.

I changed lots of parts,

New plugs
New breather and EGR plastic hosess
waterpump
thermostat housing
new injectors
valve cleaning

Battery got low, but not sure what it could be.

Cranks , seems healthy, even hear compression :) (not sure that's a good thing).

Checked and I'm getting power at the coils.

But none of the fuel injector or fuel tests that I've found inside VCDS seem to work. I smell faint fuel smell after cranking, but no visible signs of leaks.

I've also tested the various relays next to the ECM and they click as they should. All fuses seem good (Have not checked passenger side nor rear are fuses) but don't recall there being anything related to fuel or the engine in those.

So VCDS what tests can I run and really no error codes even if it's cranked for a day and a half? The computer doens't know why it can't start, seems od.

Crank sensor, I'd think t would throw the code, what other sensors would cause the 3.2 to not fire?

I figured I would get it started by saying there are no engine fault codes :)

But here is the full output.

Tach shutters back and forth 200-300 or so.

Checked I do have spark, both banks
Fuel pressure seems to be there, based on the output (but .....
I pulled a plug and not smelling fuel, so I question whether I'm getting fuel, but again there is not a test I've found that is willing to run, not injector, not fuel pump, not fill tank.nada.

Fuel pump electronic tests I get "Refused by Control Module."

I've not done a compression test, the car was running before maintenance was performed.

Lots of Malfunctions on here, has me a bit concerned..

BTW Tested I def have spark, also tested injectors and they are getting voltage when they are suppose too.

High pressure fuel pump, seems to be cooler than other parts, as is the return line, so fuel is getting there,, but... How do I test that it's getting passed that. Seems most fuel tests won't run until things are 80c+ . So in this situation how does one test this via the tool? The fuel pump typically won't run until it has some feedback from the cam. So is there anyway to really verify one is getting fuel, without yanking the entire intake apart again?

Ya, doesn't work, doesn't fit in this scenario, I don't have temp, these tests only run when the engine is at 80c..

So I need testing methods , that will allow me to test fuel delivery on an engine that has not started in 5 days and is sitting at 20c.

I've looked, really looking for some other VCDS related tests I can run to verify fuel delivery by the HPFP..

You should still be able to look at fuel pressures during (and right after) cranking though.

However, I don't think there's any way to verify fuel delivery out of the injectors themselves.

Yep I see pressure when looking at VCDS, but bah.. hmmmmm What's the odds of the HFPF going bad during maintenance.. I'm starting to hear a whine while cranking, believe that's the high pressure fuel pump, and it's either whining because it's struggling, or maybe because it's running dry.

i'm also guessing a bad fuel pressure sensor/switch would throw a DTC. So the fact I'm not getting any DTC's really has me at a loss..

Well, so I've ran through a bunch, yes I have fuel at the hpfp. Yes I have fuel coming out of the rails.

The injectors are only seeing 2volts when cranking, I doubt the injector will fire at that voltage.

The HPFP and the low pressure sensor match in voltage. 5v on one pin 4 volts on the other and ground. I believe these should match and it's how the sensor tells the pump how much to pump.

But the voltage, why so low? And yes on both banks

Also why doesn't the output tests work at all, not available , marginal conditions have not been met.. Is this the running/operating temp again?

Output Tests on an Engine tend to be restricted by the ECU software in order to prevent damage to the engine. For example, repeatedly running the fuel injector tests could wash the oil off the cylinder walls or in an extreme case, hydro-lock the engine. So the ECU software will generally prevent them from being run more than once per engine start. Yes, that's a bit of a conundrum when an engine won't start, but it's dictated by the ECU software, not VCDS.

Turn ignition on, but do not start. Start VCDS
[Select]
[01-Engine]
[Adv. Meas. Values]
The Item Selection Window will open up, at the top is a search box, type in 00589 and that will pull up for Fuel pressure. Check that box. You will now have a live fuel rail pressure value in the main window of VCDS.

Now crank the engine over, what does that fuel rail pressure go up to on an extended cranking?

And maybe I'm missing it... but what is the compression?

Thank you sir. I read that on another post and ya it def seems like a chicken and egg quandary. I need to run it, but I can't run it, until the car starts, but i need to test to see if that's what is causing the engine not to run :)n hahahaha

Totally understand this one is not in your court, and appreciate the teams assistance in trying to figure it out!

Okay Jeff it starts at about 86 bar (8600 kpa) and moves down to about 65 on initial turn of the switch and then moves around before settling right back at 86 bar. After cranking for a bit, I am starting to hear a whine, think that may be the high pressure pump.

Now I get fuel out of my rail when I open things up, so there is fuel there and since it fills up each time the high pressure fuel pump is pushing fuel (whether at the required pressure I don't know)

The voltage of my injectors seems really low (I know folks keep saying you can't really tell without a scope, but every car I've owned had 12v at the injector and the ECU managed the gnd signal). Just have a hard time thinking that this injector voltage when in on position is right. I pulled the ECU power over night (the fuse) but that didn't seem to do anything. I'll try to pull power from the battery and let it sit for a bit.

I've ordered more parts, a low fuel pressure switch, just in case.
relays all look fine, so really starting to , meh who knows.

Let me yank the battery and maybe that will give me back the output tests?

Oh you are not missing the compression, I've not checked it as this was just a lot of maintenance. I drove it into the garage, but that is the last time it started :) I did find a bad injector wire, so replaced that harness (I've got no fuses shorted, so don't think it got that bad).

meh :)

I guess I could yank the plugs again and do a compression check, but i did not mess with timing chains, cams or anything, this was all intake, valve cleaning, coolant parts replacement.

I don't know, I did that, cranked and can hear it trying but nothing and it's smelling like gas (no leaks), so maybe injection is fine but getting no spark, HOWEVER! I pulled a plug and coil and got spark, so I'm really at a loss.

And why this computer controller vehicle is not giving me any help, is nuts!! :) Trying to figure out what sensor could be bad that would not bring up a code?

I don't believe it's fuel anymore :) I'm just twisting in the wind.

I smell raw fuel after attempting to start it for a while, (out the tail pipe) there are no leaks.

So that leaves spark, which my tests showed there was spark.. If i have spark and have fuel, it should start.

Okay for the fun of it, I'm going to do a compression check, brb <elevator music>

umm cold engine I've got one cylinder reading low. and a few reading pretty high.. hahaha

Now these numbers are cold with a motor that has been cranked for 3-4 days and has not started. So not sure what I've got up in the valves and or in around the piston chambers. tops of the pistons look clean everything is following the crank..

BAH!! Come on VCDS, give me a test or an error or something. :) BTW resetting the battery, does not give you the option to run any of the output tests still.. must be kept in nvram or something.

I've got a replacement ECU in bound as well <shrug> as I said just throwing parts at it.
