By definition, one cannot have a "debate" if there is only one side presented. It would be then be a nationally televised interview where Mr. Biden would be free to state his case with no rebuttal except for rebuttal by the moderator. Even if they leave it as a town hall meeting, it will be a meeting with only one side represented, one side giving answers. It will not help the voters choose between the candidates.

If Mr. Trump holds his line on this, I believe he is making a huge mistake, for his message will not be heard by the voters with only 2 weeks left.

I agree that it won't be a debate, but going ahead with only one participant would be an indication of the opinion that the candidates have of the electorate.

IIRC a similar thing happened in a UK election "debate" recently and it certainly changed peoples opinions.
