Trying to correct speedo on a 2011 TDI Australia

Am trying to correct my speedo and whilst it seems to accept the code nothing changes.

When I did the folding mirror mod in module 42 it asked me fo a security code and it was in a popup and worked

Module 17 instruments does not do this.

I went to security and tried several combinations in both the Pin box and the IMP and WSC codes

Nothing worked

Any suggestions or is that this module wont accept alterations in this model.

Hello,

- Are you attempting to change the coding in the [Coding] of the [17-Instruments]?

If not you may want to do some research on the "Distance Impulse Number / K-Value", because this value can be changed with VCDS in the [Coding] of the [17-Instruments].

Your current coding is [771F01] the "77" is:

07 - Distance Impulse Number 7
70 - Country: Australia (AUS)

You can try different values for the 'Distance Impulse Number'
- I have no idea how this will alter the speedometer in percentage, a guess would be up to 10% or so?

- Your new coding would be [7?1F01] - where ? = the [0 to 8]

Give us some feedback and let us know how this worked.

That is where I have been attempting to do it and no matter how I change it nothing alters.

Have tried different country settings and various impulse numbers and it says change accepted but speedo stays the same 7kph fast at 100kph

Am referencing the canbus figure and my GPS HUD for accuracy.

Have also had the same lack of success in our Polo which has the not so smart MFD

Asked the workshop foreman and he said it probably wasnt possible to do it and that they couldnt do it either.

Must be able to be done somehow as it is set at a certain figure at the factory so must be alterable by someone somewhere.

Thought that like module 42 which gives a popup security code then maybe this wasnt activating the changes in 17 because it needs a code to get further access for it to do so.

I believe that this 'over reading' is a norm followed by the German manufacturers because they were apprehensive about being sued by drivers possibly being caught for speeding.

The ADR rules in Aus and NZ state that a speedo MAY read faster by up to 10%+- 4 so can read 114 and be legal It may NOT read LESS than actual speed.

So its legal but a pain My Landcruiser read bang on at 100 which was really good.

Similar legal requirement in the EU - a speedo must NOT under-read but can over-read by up to 10%. So to allow for changes due to tyre wear, etc. the manufacturers setup speedos to over-read by around 5%.

Well both of my VW's are 7/8kph over at 100kph and are a pain as you have to keep an eye on the reading to stay legal.

I have bought a HUD that runs on GPS so use that now but would like to get the speedo closer to true speed. Cant put bigger tyres on as it would take them to be 40mm larger and thats illegal here

Not sure I follow the thinking here - unless it's illegal to go too slow?

Over-reading by 7-8kph just means that when your speedo says 100kph you're actually doing 92-93kph which means you're legal with a margin to allow for speeding up when e.g. going downhill surely?

Correct and all the leadfoots here drive over the top of you.

The normal distance between cars in Queensland is measured in feet and often in single digits. Single most common accident is getting shunted up the rear.

If you want to do a genuine 100 you have to work out what the speedo is saying against what is the true speed and as speed cameras are prevalent and tolerances can be about 3 k over it pays to stay legal as the fine for up to 14k over is $163 and 3 points on your licence (Out of 12 before you lose it)

Normal travel distances here are greater as well so you have to get going to get anywhere.

In New Zealand I lived in Dunedin and it was 10 mins to go to work. Here a lot of people travel 100k each way daily just to to go to work.

And yes you can get fined for travelling too slow and holding up traffic unecessarily.

Which is different to the USA where you might be dodging bullets ROFL

Same here in the UK on the motorways. If some fool wants to travel inches off my rear bumper then I just let them pass so he can shunt someone else up the rear.
