OK: I'll readily admit that my spanking-new HEX-NET was a thing of wonder and glory to behold when I carefully unpacked it from its box this afternoon! After removing my drool from the dongle, I immediately gave it my first challenge: a speed test against my faithful old HEX+CAN for a straight-out autoscan.

Three test were performed:
  1. HEX+CAN (cable mode - of course)
  2. HEX NET connected in the traditional cable mode
  3. HEX NET in WIFI Mode (Access Point Mode)

The Laptop is a Surface Pro 3 x64, Core i7, 8 GB RAM, Windows 10 (no nannyware)

So, I'm delighted that the NEX-NET cable speed (1:28 min) has halved the time for an autoscan compared to the HEX+CAN (3:08 Min), but I'm a little disappointed at the performance of the HEX-NET's WIFI speed (20:49 Min). What can be done about the latter. I assume internet speed (which is atrocious here) is not an issue in Access Point Mode?

The 20+ Minutes via WiFi are NOT normal. You should see results slightly over the HN-USB but way below HUC. During that long scan, did you see where it was specifically "hanging"? You are running a slightly outdated Beta at this point, please re-test this once we have 16.5+ published - with the correlating latest version for the HN itself.

I don't know if it would affect communication for either car controllers or HEX-NET, but your battery voltage is very low (0.0 V et the end :cool:).
I would recommend a charger or if not possible, let it idle.

I see issues with wifi in 09, 15, 16 and 5F. That it even completed the autoscan after 20 minutes of retrying shows... well, something :) How far was your laptop from the hexnet? Any obstacles (like a big heavy metal door or dashboard) inbetween? What's the model of your wifi adapter?

Eric, Sebastian: I've tried the wifi set-up with ver 15.7.4 and pretty much the same behaviour. Doesn't hang at any module in particular - seems to be very slow at random points in the scan process (then it will race through some screens). Haven't tried infrastructure mode as my internal LAN reception in the workshop is hopeless. Access Point mode autoscan works much better on my testbench with just 2 modules (09 & 19) - but it won't do a installation list for some reason - says "function not supported".

As for the distance between dongle and laptop - it was on the driver's seat (about 12 inches away in your American measurements!). I checked the wifi signal strength during the autoscan (had the same concerns as you) and the laptop said "excellent". If I'm the only person with the problem, it must be my laptop set-up. Perhaps the firewall settings need changing?

According to the device manager - the network adaptor is a Marvell AVASTAR Wireless- AC Network Controller. It has the original driver that came with the laptop (version 15.68.9037.59 - dated 30/11/2015). Device manager says that it's working OK

We're working on reproducing this locally, possibly today. In the meantime, have you tried switching the computer to performance mode, and turning off power savings for the wifi card? Beta should be a little bit faster on that Asus too, but that's already a nice time :)

I think i reproduced the problem on a surface 4. It appears the network card disconnects and reconnects while in use. VCDS will try to restore the session if possible. I think thats whats happening with your 20+ min autoscan.

Do you have other network issues?

It doesnt appear to be network card specific. I tried another USB network card and ran into the same issue. I also modded the registry to bring back high performance mode in the power settings, no change as well.

^^^^ Santos: Hi . Sorry that I haven't replied sooner - the tyranny of distance and our out-of-sync sleeping hours, alas! Many thanks for your efforts (and those of the rest of the RT crew) on my behalf.

I'm surprised that this problem hasn't become evident sooner - the Surface series laptops aren't new and they are "mainstream" - surely I can't be the first to have hooked-up a HEX-NET to one of these laptops?

Anyhow, My Surface Pro 3 has not, and does not show any symptoms of malfunction - I have set-up a home based LAN (both Ethernet and WIFI) and everything works OK. I have lousy internet speed here, but this is because of our 4th world ISP infrastructure - Australia uses carrier pigeons to deliver the data packets!!

Since last night's problems have become evident, I have downloaded Microsoft's latest Windows 10 driver pack for the Surface laptop (which has a new driver specific to the Marvell network card) - still no difference. Without wanting to disclose any RT secrets - in layman's words - what's special about the HEX-NET's protocols that doesn't happen in normal WIFI connected devices?

PS: It's OK if the Surface Pro problem can't be fixed - the increased speed of the HEX-NET is so good, I'm more than happy to use it in cable mode, or with the Asus. It's a great evolution to the HEX+CAN!

They're dang expensive for what they are, so they tend to be rare among our customers.

The newer ones have hardware assisted power management trickery, Connected Standby / InstantGo among other things I forget, that I think is fairly rare.

What is it you're seeing?

I should have access to a Surface 3 (non-Pro) in a couple more weeks. It came out of a cereal box. No joke. I think they were dumping old inventory.

Shaun and I found a way to make it work. The issue appears to be Microsoft pinging the mothership and delaying HEX-NET packets up to 8 seconds. I was able to get it to scan by stopping the " Network location Awareness " service and leaving the surface plugged into the wall.

This is not an acceptable fix. We are still looking into it.


Update: After a reboot it looks to be broken again, disabling the service now makes no difference.

Santos: Again, appreciate your (and Shaun's) valiant endeavours, but I'm reminded of the "principal of factor scarcity" - with 20% effort, you both have probably found 80% of the likely result! If the investigations prove time-consuming (as I suspect that they wil bel), I'm more than happy to just use my old Asus laptop when I want to connect HEX NET in AP mode.
