Octavia Mk2 FL headlight voltage low

Hi All

My headlights on the Octavia are dim. I tried different bulbs, higher wattage bulbs and LED bulbs. The LED bulbs are slightly better but the lights are still dim. They used to be good but I had an accident and a new headlight unit and seemingly some electrical/electronic control unit for the headlights was replaced. They have been dim since then.

I checked the voltage at the headlight bulb power plug and it shows 11.7v. This seems a bit low.

How can you adjust the headlight voltage?

What was the voltage at the battery when you did this test?

Not sure, assume full charge but will check it.

So that was with engine not running?

Check with key on, engine off, and check battery voltage in that condition.
Then check it again with engine running, and check battery voltage in that condition.

Some voltage drop through the wiring and the BCM is inevitable, but the question is: How much voltage drop much do you have?

Thanks Uwe. I checked it today. Battery was 12.2v with engine off. 11.5v at headlight.

Checked with engine running, 14v at tickover and 13v at headlight so seems voltage is not the issue.

Where do I check or adjust it via VCDS? Anything else I can check?

That sounds like a normal/reasonable amount of voltage drop, and not the BCM actively reducing the voltage to the lights, so I rather doubt there's anything you can adjust to make them brighter.

OK, so that BCM does have "Headlight Dimming (Life Time Extension)" in Byte 19 of its coding. It is already set to 13.6V, which is the maximum. You might try setting it to "Inactive" to see if that changes anything.

Car been out of use for a while and battery died. replaced with spare battery and have had a few runs in it.

The lights are still very dim, in fact they seem worse. Like candles.

I have eventually connected up VCDS and found byte 19 and set front and rear to inactive.

The headlights are still very dim.

Well, if headlights are still very dim, then it's time to try to find the voltage drop using a meter. It could be anywhere between the battery and the ground point(s) for the headlights.

If you're still getting those voltages then the problem isn't voltage or BCM playing games - so IMHO the only thing left to try/change is the bulbs.

Are they original bulbs? I would suggest getting some extra bright (but road legal) bulbs such as Osram Night Breaker or Philips X-treme Vision.

If they're no better then are the headlamps discoloured? - that's not unusual after several years.

If neither of those help, then it's just Halogen bulb brightness IMHO - are you used to HID (Xenon) headlights in another car?

it was fine a while back with 100w halogen in it. I had a bump and one of the light units was replaced along with suspension struts etc and they also had to replace some electrical board for the lights that was welded in. Not quite sure what tha board was.

When I got it back, the lights were very poor with 55w and 100w bulbs in so I put a set of 55w (each) LED bulbs in. They were very slightly brighter.

There is no discolouration in the light units, they both look perfect. I tried several different bulbs and they are all very dim.

I will have a go at testing with the meter.

That MIGHT explain one light being dimmer/brighter than the other but not both being dim.
What it does raise is the question of headlight aim, are they aimed correctly - not too low?

Note (ignore if you wish) in the UK 100W bulbs are not street legal, nor is ftting LED bulbs into headlamps that are not approved for them (which Octavia headlamps are not).

Well, he hasn't really. He's determined that he only has 11.7V at the headlights. He hasn't located the source of the drop. If the battery is at ~14V with the engine running, there's 3V of drop somewhere.
