Hi everyone. Long time no chat.
So before I get started.... here's my autoscan:
Short back story:
I just completed two major repairs:
1)Steering lock replacement (complete disassembly of steering column) I'm mentioning this one because it's the only place I worked inside the car?????
2)Drivers wheel bearing replacement. (I think I blew something up during this process)
What does the HVAC have to do with the wheel bearing you ask? ME - a DIY amateur who breaks as much as he fixes. So basically, I was wrestling getting the CV shaft out of the old hub assembly, and into the new one. I was repeatedly turning the steering wheel left and right trying to find a good position to get the shaft slip in (That's what she said). This went on for some time. During this I had to have the key in the run position to allow the wheel free movement without the steering lock engaging. The battery was starting t run down - ******** so I pulled the negative battery cable**************. When I was finished the wheel bearing install and put everything back together, I proceeded to reattach the negative cable. BUT I DIDNT TURN THE IGNITION OFF FIRST!!!! So you can imagine the the sparks at the battery post during this process as current started pouring in to the vehicles systems again.
Well I pulled the key out, crossed myself, reinserted the key and started the vehicle. All is good! I consider myself lucky at this point. Take it for a quick test drive. Call it a night.
Next day wife takes the car and says I broke the heater.
THE PROBLEM
The Blower wont blow. It doesn't even attempt to spin. There might be a slight single twitch if I hold it in my hand and turn on the blower with the climate control but that could be my imagination.
So, this brings me to today. As best I can tell, all functions work with the climate control module -MAYBE
My testing: basic output test in VCDS for the BLOWER MOTOR yields nothing.
I removed the blower unit from under the dash. I have removed the Fan resistor from the unit. I left the climate controller/power connector from vehicle plugged in to resistor and measured the open circuit voltage on the 2 pins for the fan motor connector on the resistor. I have 14.4 volts on these pins when the engine is running. If I plug the fan back in, NOTHING from the fan. The fan is difficult to spin with my hand. It doesn't spin freely if I give it a good twist and let go.
Off the cuff Id guess I nuked the fan. Fine, whatever, Ill take it. It's 35 buck for a new Denso unit on fleabay.
BUT!!
Here's where I'm confused. Fan doesn't spin when plugged into resistor even though voltage present on fan connector pins. If I wire the fan directly to a car battery with some jumper wire..... IT SPINS!!!! So WTF?
I get the ERROR 01273 - Fresh Air Blower (V2) whether or not the fan motor is plugged into the resistor. I also get Open Circuit or Short to Positive (code not in this autoscan but is usually there) whether or not the the fan motor is plugged into the resistor
Other stranger behavior????????? If I measure the open circuit voltage on the fan motor pins of the resistor, the readings don't change regardless of the fan setting on the climate control. If I had set the fan to half speed, shouldn't there be a change in the voltage output at the fan connector to reduce the fan motor speed????
So, I think it's the fan? but then it works on the work bench hard wired to battery. So why doesn't it spins if there voltage on the pins on the resistor? Is the resistor actually borked and not allowing enough current to pass to the motor?
