The real question is how much the manufacturers will lock out the out the aftermarket.
Or said another way, "The real questions is how much the manufacturers will be permitted to lock out the aftermarket." If the aftermarket and the consumer do not complain, then expect us all to be using a factory tool to do anything on the cars.
I contend that with all the telematics gear going on the vehicles, the manufacturer will give access to the data they collect but that access will cost. The access will only come when the governments force a method on the manufacturers.
Who can work on a Tesla? The customer knows that Tesla is collecting all that data off the car. Telsa knows where it is driven, how it is driven, and all that goes with it. Probably has collection capability to know what the driver plays in the sound system. They want the data because it is a huge revenue stream. They will be selling it to others so they can gear products and services toward the drivers. Big big big business...
They are not going to give free access to that information. They are not going to give free access to diagnostic information. They are going to control the data.
What will we discuss? That things have changed and that we have found new ways to continue enabling DIY fans to play with their cars. Change is always happening... sometimes change does end an industry. I don't think the end is here but I also do not think we will have easy access to information. We'll have to find ways to play nice with VAG so we can have the information our users desire and need.
