Unable to change long coding and got message “code rejected request out of range”?

Hello experts,

I was trying to code my car’s tranny (13 Audi A8 with ZF8HP) in order to turn on DSP (which learns your driving style and adjust its shifting pattern automatically). However when I entered the code this message showed up

“This appears to be an uninitialized control module, valid WSC/Importer/Equipment data may be required.
Click [Yes] for VCDS to use default values of 12345/123/12345
Click [No] for VCDS to try the values currently in the module
Click [Cancel] to go back and manually edit the values”.

No matter which hone I chose, an error message always came up “Coding rejected, error 31 request out of range”.

Does anyone know what caused this issue, or know the correct WSC values to make the module accept the coding?

Can you please provide a full unedited autoscan of your car.

In the meanwhile, your trying to enter a coding value your tranny does not support so that’s why the coding rejected error.

It was from a few days ago but nothing has changed since. Note that the tranny fault code is the reason I want to code the long coding. According to other Audi forums the coding 000001 is for European/Rest of the world model and 000002 is for North America model. I tried to change it to 000002 and that's where I got the error message.

Does it have long coding helper for the tranmission coding? Some of the modules have another bit that needs to be set for the module to accept coding. For example MQB platform cars PDC module has one bit labelled coded which needs to be set at the same time you set the actual coding. Otherwise it will reject all coding.

If I remember correctly, tranny had the same coded bit. (But maybe for MQB only?)

Thanks for the info. Yes there is long coding helper. As mentioned before the last two digits are for different regions (oo is control module not coded, 01 is RoW, and 02 is NA). And the middle two are for paddle shifters. First two have no explanation at all.

Go to [Options].

Click on the User Interface & Identification tab. It will look like this:

Set WSC to some random 4-digit number, such as the last four of your phone number, with a leading zero.
Set Importer number to: 444.
Set Equipment Number to 01778.
Click [Save]
Exit VCDS.
Re-start VCDS.

Try changing the coding in your TCU to: 000001.

UPDATE

First of all thank you for all the valuable info.

So I entered non zero WSC, importer, and equipment numbers, and was able to change the coding to 000001 (coding for RoW). Coding 000002 (for NA) is still rejected. The fault code "control unit incorrectly coded" is now gone. I have been driving the car around for a while and the fault never came back again. Yet I don't feel any difference regarding tranny's shifting pattern.

I have been searching on the internet and the limit amount of VCDS scan I found about this 4.0T A8 all have coding 000001. So I guess Audi didn't specifiy tranny SW for NA on this type of vehicle?

Also I can't find any instructions on tranny adaptation for the 8 speed. Under basic setting there are "resetting all adaptation values", "fast adaptation", and "reset to factory setting". Which option should I choose to perform the adaptation?

I could only think of fast adaptation. DO NOT choose reset all adaptations. That has tendency to wipe the controller squeky clean
