Good morning all,
I just bought this to fix up.
Not sure if its early or late 05 Passat. I clicked on "early" on the vag-com

Had check engine light on.
Initially (couldn't get the program to do a full scan so I was able to get it to scan the engine. I cleared the codes. Don't know what they were.)
After, I got it to do a full scan. It is attached.
Seems like after the second scan and cleared codes that it started idling very rough.

Upon starting in the morning, there is a terrible rattling for only a second.

Also, the "Cruise" light is on and I can't find how to turn it off.

I thank you for any help in understanding where to start.

Gary

First concern I have Gary is the fact that the cam shaft and engine speed sensor have incorrect correlation. That could mean that the engine is out of time. I know you said you picked it up as a "fix up". Do you have any history? Know anything of what might had been done previously?

No Bruce
The gentleman that sold it to me stated that the reason the check engine light was on was because it needed a MAP sensor. Supposedly according to a scan done by a local auto parts store (Advance)

Doesn't this sound like it could be a faulty adjuster with shoes worn to nub on cam chain?

Did you know you can take VC off to inspect immediately & before engine destroys itself and verify taper fit virtual timing marks with lock bar to observe of harmonic balancer mark?

That noise and code are not for a MAP sensor , did you find a MAP sensor for V6 ATQ in the RTFB yet?

I will take off valve covers and see what I can find.
I will be able to see if its been fooled with before.
I will study the Ross tech article I found reference to the fault code.
Thanks

Thank you for your help so far!
I find that both the chains feel tight when pushing on them with my fingers.
One of the tensioners is able to be pushed down a bit. Feels like a spring pushing it back up.
The other one is much harder to push down. Does not act like the other.
The Belt appears to be brand new.
Maybe the code was never reset after the belt was changed.
Maybe the poor idle (after all codes were reset) is caused by the numerous breaks in the PCV hosing.
Does anyone know anything about these tensioners?

How do you post pictures?

Is it just me or does this sound like someone just put this basket of bolts back together and shipped before completed the full repair now, huh?

Yes, I am having trouble loading my pictures.
And for now I am giving up. I know you all have seen many pictures of the v6 without the valve covers,
Again, I could not see anything really wrong. The plastic guides were all there (on top at least). Nothing looked wrong. The chains were quite tight. One tensioner (drivers side) had up and down movement while pushing down with my fingers. The other one seemed to be stiffer.
I started it up to see if i could tell which bank is making the noise. I wasn't able to tell as the noise goes away before I could get around the door to listen.
After running it for 20 seconds, , both the tensioners acted differently. The drivers side-the INNER PLUNGER part had the movement where as the drivers side- theOUTER SLEEVE part had a bit of movement, all with finger pressure.
I have done a lot of reading on this symptom and have come to the conclusion to put it back together and insure that I have the proper oil and filter. (someone mentioned that a Lucas product solved his).
It seems to me that it is quite a big job changing out the tensioners?
Thanks again for you alls help!

Keep in mind tensioner adjusters work inverse of each other & with spring load from opposite of each other, did you check timing?

Thank you Jack for your recommendation to check the timing.
From what I see, a tool that holds the cams stationary is used to replace the belt.
In my travels of reading, I do remember seeing somewhere where someone showed (On the Harmonic balancer I think) that his was one tooth off. Does anyone have a resource or link for something that could guide me in proving one way or another?
I do not have the tool.
Also, from my reading, that from my scan that there is a "Throttle position sensor" that could be the culprit throwing the error code. That is somewhat easier to replace.
I wonder if any of these electrical components (Camshaft position sensor and/or Throttle position sensor) require proper adjustment?
Oh, I forgot to mention earlier that there does not seem to be any marks on the valve covers by the chains.
Geesh, these engines are complex!

Ok, Thanks,
I have put it back together and after a few laps around the block the check engine light comes back on.
I tried to see what my OBD said. It said P0343, which points towards the cam chain timing....again.
I see there should be 16 links between sprocket teeth.
Before I get back into this, can someone enlighten me as how with probably 6to8 sprocket teeth in contact with the chain, that it could possibly jump over all those to jump a tooth?
Is there something that I am missing here?
There is a utube movie on how to reset the chain.
Thank you very much!

Is it possible timing chains have been setup wrong and was sold to you like this due to someone's stupidity?
Are the correct adjuster part numbers installed?
Have you installed the lock bar to verify the taper fit cam sprockets?
Has wiring been verified, ECU and G40 are okay?

Jack,
Thanks again for your help.
I don't like driving it with Check Engine light on.
You keep asking me if I have checked the timing.
Are you talking about the belt timing?
In all honesty, does this require me to put the car in service mode and obtain the tool bar?
Seems there is the other timing issue of the head camshaft timing. When I rotate the engine by hand,( by removing a few items only)I get chatter from the cam tensioner. The guide seems to be there. Could it be worn?
It does go up and down (Not very understandable at this point)
In Summary, are you suggesting I be sure the belt timing is perfect before I try to fix the cam chain issue?
Thanks!

OK, tore the front of the car off (Service Mode :)
Saw that at TDC the intake notch on bank 1 was 10+- degrees off. All others dead on.
Removed the intake cam caps and the front duel cap and the cam chain tensioner Found there was no nylon guide under.
Replaced guide and reset chain at 16 rollers between and lined up to notches.
Found that you can see (If you know where to look) if the lower/under guide is intact. My #2 bank was.
Car runs fine. Didn't even have to reset any faults :)

Ok, so , i'm still getting "Check engine" light intermittently.
I'm now wondering if I should change the tensioner/timing adjusting assembly?
Could someone help me make the decision as to what to do? Thanks!
