Can I tell the health of my EGR valve from a freeze frame?

Hi Folks,

Car (2011 Audi A3 8p 2l TDI) went into limp mode the other week and VCDS shows up two fault codes for the EGR valve - auto scan below.

Does the freeze frame information let you troubleshoot much further without removing the EGR valve for a visual inspection?

Have you checked N18 for function in outputs if supported and the actual EGR basic setting tests in VCDS?

I believe I ran the EGR test and this completed fine. I can't recall the exact name of the test but it verified the valve closed > open > closed.

I'll check the N18 for function.

Study the N18 in WD too is advised.........this way you are familiar with circuit or shared tracks.

I have couple customers driving 1,6 and 2l CR TDI engines, that have got EGR related fault codes only once. After clearing codes all EGR tests were successful and fault never comes back. Why fault was registered, that only one time - I don't know.
From my experience EGR modules for those engines start to fail constantly at mileages 200-250k km. Then excentric mechanism mowing valve stem is worn and it's time to replace EGR module.

Here is why Martin,

The rear OXS sensor becomes contaminated & at the flapper valve with carbon.
This sensor when disrupted can act sporadically and even more so here due to our shit fuels.

This sensor is what is used to determine whether or not the EGR readings are proper.....most often it reads a false positive of rich, so it opens the EGR longer and commences to pile up ash making them stick open eventually for cars driven short trip.

Then sometimes the OXS just needs to be taken out and cleaned with sodium hydroxide and rinsed with distilled water, further cleaned with a propane torch.

Cars which are driven with MIL on will require even more manual remediation of carbon and ash as problem progresses.
