Gel (or adhesive pad) rain sensor replacement - Golf MK5 2008

Hi,

After an unprofessional wind-shield replacement (in official VW dealer) the rain sensor gel (or adhesive pad) got lots of bubbles. The service has a 2 year warranty and I already warned the manager.

However, all of the dealers in my region have a very bad reputation, so...

... I want to repair it by replacing the gel (or adhesive pad) but I am not sure if I need to remove the epoxy glued bracket that holds the entire gear (rain sensor and mirror).

Can you please help me out before breaking anything.

Keep in mind that if it is mandatory to un-glue the bracket I prefer to leave it alone. I am not very good with glues and probably if I do anything I will end up with something worse than just air bubbles! In this case I'll talk to the manager again.

It should have a metal ring bonded to the windscreen and mirror clips onto this - the rain sensor is held in place by springs on the mirror and it only pressed against the screen and not attached to the screen.

Unclip the plastic cover on each side off the mirror
Disconnect the wiring plug on the bottom off the mirror
Remove the front part off the upper wiring cover
Disconnect the rain sensor
Slide the mirror downwards parallel to the screen
This should leave the rain sensor in the mirror mounting bracket
Now you can remove the rain sensor.

The sensor is a little bit glued to the glass but a little wiggle and pulling solved this out!

By the way: I was getting trouble to remove the sensor because after a very nice wind-shield shield replacement (besides de bubbles) they broke the sensor rain case clips.

However, I only reached this conclusion after getting help in this thread

Meaning that when I was about to remove the rain sensor, the outer shield case dropped showing the PCB. But (of course) the lens was still glued to the wind-shield.

I got confused when I saw a PCB full of optical sensors and integrated circuits hanging around

After that I found that the dealer's specialist broke the sensor rain case clips and damaged the silicone pad
