Hello everyone,

Sorry for asking for help again so soon.

Car is a 2006 A6 with the 3.2FSI, completely stock.

Over the course of the spring I did a lot of very short-distance driving, until one day it started shaking during idle, stalling on hills, etc.

Everything involved in this has seemed very strange:
-Upon cold start, it runs like a clock. No misfires, sounds great, idles @ 1200-1400ish, drops back down to 800-850ish and continues running smoothly.
-Lambda reads rich in VCDS, and gas smell is obvious outside of the car.

-As the engine begins to warm up, the car starts to almost "stutter" a little bit, and you can feel it in the seats. Start getting a slow, somewhat consistent misfire in cylinder 4, sometimes 5.

-Once car is warm, misfires get worse than ever, and are primarily focused on cylinder 6 with the least amount on 4.

-Car seems to mostly smooth out as revs climb. You can't feel the misfires nearly as much, but VCDS still notices some.
-Misfires get worse and RPM drops when I turn the A/C on to max
-Misfires get significantly worse and car goes into limp mode when put in reverse
-The left exhaust pipe seems to give a smooth, cool, consistent "put-put-put" kind of exhaust, while the right exhaust pipe is hot, has almost no flow, and the "put-put" part is not so well defined.

Scan shows no fault codes related to O2 sensors or fuel trim or anything, however the measuring blocks show very unsettling values. Screenshots at the bottom.

Additionally, I am aware the scan shows the P0346 code, however I believe that to be a separate issue, as it has been there for just over a year (since I had the timing done).

And here are a couple of screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/C4bM5

What I've tried so far:
-Rotated coil packs (Bank 1 -> Bank 2). No Difference.
-Rotated spark plugs (Bank 1 -> Bank 2). Engine ran significantly worse. Almost wouldn't run at all. Replaced spark plugs, and idle is now smoother, however the problems still slowly creep back as described above.

If anyone has any advice on things to try, measuring blocks to check, really just anything, it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm going to take the liberty of putting your screen-shots in-line:

I'd like to see what you have in Group 032.

Have you tried an Italian Tune-Up? ;)

Start with some easy things.......

Unplug all OXS sensors and see how it runs in 50/50......if no change than have a look at the ECT and IAT.

The screen shots above show a sensor at less than operation temp and if that is a complete warm engine........ nix that ECT.

You must correct the G163, chain timing or fix wring/change controller, to negate the cam sensor code and fat mixture from that incomplete combustion too.

Thank you for the prompt and intelligent responses as usual guys.

I'd like to see what you have in Group 032.

Right after I started the car, I loaded up block 32, 33, and 1. This screenshot was taken about 60 seconds after starting.

After about four or five minutes, I notice this has happened:

EgCHDod.png

Additionally, the "Resistance Bank 2 Sensor 2" changed from 2.13kOhms to ~350ohms, however I seem to have missed that screenshot.

Misfires continued the very same, and everything felt the same from inside the car, with the exception of revs dropping a little (although this was just something I "noticed", I don't have any hard evidence).

Upon inspection of the exhaust (car still running), the right side muffler was putting out a decent amount of visible smoke that smelled like gasoline.

Have you tried an Italian Tune-Up? ;)

Unfortunately not haha

I assume I need to be in-gear and on the road for this? I'm currently unable to get the car out of the driveway, as it is slightly uphill, and the car will not rev over 1800rpm or so in reverse.

Start with some easy things.......

Excuse my ignorance, I'm a bit of a noob, but what is 50/50? Also, ECT and IAT are coolant and intake air thermo's?

I haven't been letting the car warm up 100%, just about 10 minutes of idling, as the conditions seem to worsen the longer it runs and so I usually shut it off. Sounds/runs like it's brand new when it's cold though (about 10°C / 50°F).

You must correct the G163, chain timing or fix wring/change controller, to negate the cam sensor code and fat mixture from that incomplete combustion too.

Honestly I couldn't find anything wrong with the wiring and I rotated all of the sensors. Local store did not have a tool to compression test recessed heads, so I have to order a part for that or bus into town.

I'm willing (eager, in-fact) to address the issue, but honestly not sure what my next move should be here.

I did wind up purchasing a subscription for the day to erwin.audiusa.com, and downloaded everything. I can't seem to find too much informational content inside the repair manual, with the exception of assembly/dis-assembly information and diagrams.

I have watched a few youtube videos on the camshaft chain and assembly, however I cannot seem to piece together how I should go about checking my timing, rather than replacing and setting everything.

Thanks again

50/50 will need to be done hot.......... to see if the OXS is in error while all unplugged or will ECT and IAT fixed maps engage to straighten out the mixture.
It's a matter of isolating each system by keep alive.

By only running in warm up mode you are inducing a rich map and latent hot soak start enrichment.....& these are very rich/fat!

So, just to clarify, I should unplug all 4 o2 sensors, run it that way, report back?

Should I be pushing the car out onto the road so that I can drive it forwards and see if that's possible? I'm not sure how else to get it to warm temps (which I'm assuming is about 80C?)

For diagnostics only yes sir.........

Run engine at 2000-2500 RPM in place and wait for temps to verify they are linear via logs........no road test needed.

My suspicion on camshaft angles/timing. Try to swap camshaft position sensor from left bank to right. Try the same with electro-hydraulic adjuster valves. Observe fault codes/misfires following swapped parts or not.

Thank you for the prompt and intelligent responses as usual guys.

Right after I started the car, I loaded up block 32, 33, and 1. This screenshot was taken about 60 seconds after starting.

After about four or five minutes, I notice this has happened:
Hmm.. All zeros on the fuel trims. Unless the engine has not been run since DTCs were last cleared, that's not right....

Car is a 2006 A6 with the 3.2FSI, completely stock.
As we can see in first autoscan, misfires on all 3 cylinders left bank appeared exactly at the same mileage as camshaft position sensor fault. I can see only two options here - camshaft position sensor went out of order or something mechanical happened affecting camshaft timing on left bank.
BTW noone touched G163 connector when faults appeared? There is another one connector next to it, i guess intake manifold flap position sensor. Connectors are the same, length of wires allow to interchange them :D

According to history ..........G163 has been in error since last repair shop did timing, as he aforementioned & in other thread.

If Martin is right about connectors.......... than that says OP didn't check wiring as per WD for G163 back to ecu.

Let me go back to the wiring diagram from erwin again.

Additionally, I will try the 50/50 test.

I've swapped the sensor, but I very well could have made a mistake with which connector to use (as I suppose the shop guy could've as well).

Reason the misfires show up at the same time as the G163 is that I had the battery unplugged and cleared the codes about a week ago testing it. As Jack mentions, the p0346 has indeed been there for over a year since it had the timing done, however the misfires and poor performance only started up recently. In January, my last drive before spring started, I did a 2,000km drive with great performance and 32mpg (got over 1,000km/600miles per tank). I'm not sure if timing would have affected that, but problems only seem to have started after making the mistake of using the car when I probably could've walked to work.

Car has been run maybe 3 or 4 times, about 10 minutes or so of idle each time, since DTC's were cleared.

If it is not electrical/sensor fault and You had G163 error a lot of time earlier, I'd suggest not to do a lot of tests with starting engine but remove valve cover and check timing. If some parts of chain gear came loose, You can damage Your engine very seriously...

I already ran it once more to test out the connection after checking the wiring diagram. G163 is connected to the correct connector, rather than the Intake Manifold sensor on the front (although you're right, they're the same size connector).

What would be the procedure for manually checking the timing? Am I rotating the engine and looking for the threaded holes in both camshafts to point up at the same time, so that I would be able to put a locking tool on it? I can't find anything more specific in the manual.

If You have this picture, You should have others from manual, too. Yes, if crankshaft is fixed with locking pin T40069, both camshaft holes must face up and You should be able to fit tool T40070.
What happened with Your engine's timing before?

FYI timing can appear as if in and be out...........always check chain slack direction of side and tension or for stretch.

before you take it apart run a cam correlation cold and hot

I do. It only really goes over how to replace all of the parts, but there's nothing on checking the teeth or timing beyond the procedure for doing a compression test.. Unfortunately the only tool I have at the moment, and I only just received it, is T40058, which is the adapter for turning the motor.

The car had timing issues, and was taken to a shop for all of the timing components to be replaced. When he gave it back, the CEL was still on and the G163 error was there, however he said the timing was fine and it was an issue with the computer. I was living about 800km away from the nearest shop that would work on an Audi, and couldn't really afford to stick around, so I left it until I inevitably stopped really trying to remedy the issue, as the car ran fine.

FYI timing can appear as if in and be out...........always check chain slack direction of side and tension or for stretch.

So, with timing cover off, I want to see how the chain itself feels in terms of tension, and at all different points? Am I able to do this without the cam locator (T40070), and crankshaft locking pin (T40069)? I only have the tool mentioned above at the moment. I am able to order the tools, however the goal here is to get mobile as soon as possible; I am currently stuck living with family on the wrong side of the country :p

How would I go about doing this?

You must factor the cam correlation that is allowed within the adjuster barrels being empty of oil.

Many forget to do this and can get a system to line up but be off a tooth.

This is why I make my own marks on the barrel and on the barrel base from center by taking them apart.

The Factory/OEM should have put a hole to install a pin and lock the barrel, "ummmm" so this cant happen, and than further this would let that oil weep to lube the chain and cool it...........however, what do I know .........:banghead:.

Labyrinth This!
