I've had a P0016 code on my B8.5 for about 2 weeks, and I'm trying to rule out what the issue is.

The car runs like normal, and I don't hear any strange sounds. It's not as quick as it used to be, which is probably from the VVT being locked at 28 degrees (found this out in VCDS, maybe the car does this as a "limp mode"?). The car has a hard time starting, but if I clear the P0016 code and start the car, it will crank and start like normal. I've looked at the "Camshaft Deviation from Reference" stat from VCDS and it gives me a different degree each time (ranging from -23 to -3). The same goes for the "Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1" stat. Maybe the camshaft sensor is bad?

I was able to confirm that the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensors are getting power. I also checked the VVT solenoid and did not find the pin to be sticking out. I changed the oil using Pennzoil 0W-40 about 1k miles ago. Today, I changed the spark plugs and coil packs, which made the car run/idle smoother but the code is still there.

I find it hard to believe that the timing chain is the issue since it runs like normal (besides the locked VVT) and will start like normal if I clear the code first. Any suggestion on what I should check would be greatly appreciated.

what you mean saying "Your cam timing is out" ?

is sensor or phase shift pulley
any shematic maybe is better

The Cam G40 and crank G28 sensors are sending out a signal and the ECU can see these are not occurring in sync so the cam timing is out, the CAEB suffers terrible problems with chain wear and jumping especially pre 2012.

Hello,

Yep, check timing, plus 100,000 miles, it is time.

Given the high rate of failure, I think Volkswagen and Audi should have a "recommend timing chain/tensioner replacement" as part of the maintenance schedule, say every 80~100k miles. :p

You can check the timing chain wear by following the procedure here...

Also you can remove the little plastic/rubber cap on the front engine cover to view the chain tensioner..

Do not ignore this warning! Catastrophic engine failure can and will occur!

EDIT: We do have a Ross-Tech wiki page you will also want the have a look at:

Hope this helps,

drpeter

Yep it helped, thanks for the help. I ended up doing the timing chain and balance shaft, and the chain had indeed jump timing. The chain was also stretched out. Been a month since I did the job and no issues since then

Sorry for barging into your thread, I can of course create my own if needed but I figured I'd just ask here :
I have the same code on my 2009 Q5 2.0 TFSI (CDNC engine). The previous tensioned failed, skipped timing, 16 bent valves and so on.
I had the head re-done by a specialist and put it together a few days ago. Timing was done using the proper tools, the engine ran great at first.
Couple of days later, it sometimes had a very rough idle, and after doing a fault scan I only had this P0016 code.
I re-checked timing using a comparator in cylinder 1 (to rule out any misaligment of the damper pulley) and the timing is spot on.

What else could trigger this code ? A faulty camshaft or crankshaft sensor ?
I plan on taking the spool valve out and check its internal condition, from outside and based on this very thorough wiki page, it seems OK.

I can of course post an auto-scan if needed, thanks a lot!

To me P0016 can only be the result of incorrect timing.

I am also of this opinion, but the problem is : I have 63mm between the center lip and the intake camshaft timing mark and 125mm between exhaust and intake camshaft timing marks when piston #1 is at TDC...
What really annoys me is that the engine sometimes runs like crap (mainly at idle), and other times runs smoothly. I am pissed off at myself for not checking the spool valve thoroughly before putting it back in.
Another addition : the screen in the valve brige was removed before I reinstalled it, it was damaged as expected and the mesh leftovers were found in the cylinder head and obviously removed (the head went into the washing machine at the machine shop).

Have you had the inlet manifold off to check for carbon on the backs of the inlet valves?

Well the head has been completely redone with brand new valves and stem seals.
It looked like that before I put it back in :

Nice quality work. I have to keep coming back to timing.

I've had that issue and it went out with new timing chain and guides. But cam phasing was still high -2.x degrees which it shouldn't be for a new chain. Good used camshafts later and everything was fine (phasing went to low -0.x).

Have you reset the chain length adaptations?

Thanks for your replies.
Cam phasing is in the 0.x range so I do not know it the adjuster can be the culprit here... At idle though the cam adjuster specified value remains at 28°, the actual is also around 28°.

@Crasher , what do you mean by "chain length adaptations" ? I performed basic settings in the engine ECU after the whole repair, unfortunately not with VCDS for what it's worth. Is that what you meant ?

I checked the condition of the spool valve, it is in perfect condition. No debris inside, moves completely freely.

In the Baic Settings on some versions I have seen a chain wear adaption reset after replacement but not all have it.
