2009 VW Tiguan Steering Assist Malfunction

I hope you guys can help save me and my family a $2000 repair. A few weeks after we put new tires on the Tig the steering wheel light began to come on intermittently. Soon after the steering would go completely out but only when the car was started up. Sometimes it would come back after a re-start. I came to Ross-Tech and found a steering reset procedure that worked, but only for a short time. We took the car to a local mechanic who said the steering assist motor was completely burned out and the entire steering rack would have to be replaced for $2000!! Something didn'
t feel right so I bought VAGCOM and looked into it myself. Since the steering is working off and on the motor could not be "completely burned out" as the mechanic had said. The information from the autoscan appears to indicate a loose wire somewhere or a bad connection. I put on a new starter, a new battery, and re-installed the battery cables to ensure a tight connection. I looked for any connectors and plugs and made sure they were firmly connected. I cannot gain access to the steering module since it is buried in the chassis behind the engine. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have as to the cause or any procedure that I can perform to reset something that will give us back our car. Thanks. Below is the autoscan from VCDS.

You say it works "off and on".. Is there any pattern to when it works, or when it ceases to work?

I don't know enough about those electric steering systems to offer any specific advice, only enough to agree with your own assessment that those faults are indicative of a bad connection somewhere. The thing is that bad connection could be internal to the rack or the module, and thus not readily repairable other than by replacing the failed component.

Hopefully somebody who's got more real world experience with these systems will chime in here.

I think I may have found a clue to the problem. I noticed the battery light would come on while trying to start the car but only in instances when the starter seemed to lag. Ordinarily the car just busts right over with a tilt of the key. Then it hit me, we have had a new battery for a few months now so it couldn't be that, or could it? I had auto zone check the battery which ended up good but the alternator has a bad voltage regulator. Could it be that simple? Could the variation in charging be telling the modules that the signal is intermittent and throwing a DTC? I drove the car for the last two days and had no problems. Today, at the auto parts store the steering went out and the MIL came on. I performed the basic function right/left/center turns and a quick shut down and the steering came right back. Are these cars that sensitive to voltage variances? Any input would be helpful. Thanks to all for helping me!

YUP!

STOP!

Battery recharge or replace immediately..........verify charging system health.

These later cars are not happy with poor grounds, weak batteries or charging system gone a limp ding ding.

If the systems are under voltage......... you will get a keep alive function to keep other essential modules functional, but in many cases not trigger a DTC in 0x09.

This is why auto-scans kick ass for looking at everything and the frequencies of the stamps.

Just because a battery will start a car doesn't mean everything else will function proper as in the old days.

Ignition switch is most likely not so good ...............or load relays for reduction, B+ 30 or terminal B+15

A quick review of WD will show that SC14 ( B278 ) Terminal 15 if not fed proper from the switch or through relay will give you a dead RACK!

Each call I have gotten on this ......so far the cores had no issue with motors.
In the end it was connections to rack which were bad and only cores with physical damage from collision were actually bad or fluid leak.
