2016 A6 DPF Issue

Hi All,

I'm a longtime lurker on the forum, but finally registered as I need some expert help. I have been driving VAG vehicles for at least the last 20 years, and currently have a 2016 Audi A6 with the 2.0l ultra TDI (CNHA) engine. A recurring DPF error code and limp home mode led me to buy my own VCDS cable last year to log some data on the error. To get started I would like to know what to post next, should paste the most recent full vehicle scan, or a compilation of the last few relevant engine segment scans when the error has occurred? I have a feeling myself that the G450 DPF pressure sensor may be an issue, but I'm hopeful that some of the more experienced members will be able to point me in the right direction, thank you for reading.

Yes, it has been out for several good hard runs recently, the most recent one did clear the DPF warning light. The problem is that this MIL and limp home mode will now occur at least once a week. A year ago when the DPF light would come on, a good hard run would clear it for a month or longer, now it will reoccur within a week and a good run does not usually clear it first time, and the car will go into limp home mode and need VCDS to fix that. Then usually the first good run after that will clear the DPF light. Soot does not seem to be the issue, the car doesnt seem to complete a full regeneration all the time, what would be the cause of that? I do hear the fan running after most long trips, so I know that it does try, but why would it not complete? Here are some of the last few engine scans after it went into limp home mode, if that sheds any more light on things.

One of reasons for too long regeneration time and/or not completed/aborted regenerations is the needed temperature is not reached. Unfortunately EGT sensor measurements are not stored in FF data with DTC.
Start with checking EGT sensors. First check is to read temperature values of all EGT sensors when vehicle is not started at least 8 hours. They all must be equal to ambient T (+/- 5 degrees tolerance is acceptable). If one differs more - it is faulty.

Good point, thanks for that. Any idea what channels, or will I just do a search for EGT values and see what comes up? I suppose a log of them isnt really any use, as you say a reference when cold first thing in the morning would show any discrepancies.

The problem is VAG's naming of things isn't very consistent. "EGT" will not turn up much. Neither will "gas temp". I would start the search filter with just "temp", which will give you a fairly long list of things, and then narrow it down from there.

Having taken a quick look through the file for that ECU, that will miss some. There was at least one where "Exhaust" was abbreviated to something like "Exh."

First thing, I can’t believe the last post on this was back in August. I kept telling myself that a few weeks had passed and that I need to reply with an update if I wanted any help, and then the weeks turned into months, work / family / Christmas / pandemic etc. got in the way, and I never posted an update.....

But all the while the same fault has been happening at least at weekly intervals if not even more regularly than that. Three times in the last week alone has just been too much and was the push I needed to update the thread and hope that others would still be keeping an eye on it.

As was discussed before, the car does not seem to be able to do a full regen on its own during normal driving conditions to clear the fault. Then after another day or two of short journeys, the fault will cause the car to go into limp home mode. I can cancel this with VCDS, but the original fault still remains, and will more than likely not clear itself after another two or three days, and go into limp home mode again. A long journey of say 100km will usually clear the fault, but this would usually involve at least 30 minutes of ‘motorway’ type driving, which is not a frequent option in a rural area.

As was suggested earlier in the thread, after sitting overnight I did a scan first thing the next morning when the car was cool, and checked every reading that I could see that had ‘temp’ in it, but nothing looked to have any great variation from the ambient. I didn’t check any readings with ‘exh’ specifically, but I will do that tomorrow morning to see if I can spot anything. But all suggestions will be entertained, I am at my wits end, and very tempted to look into bypassing the whole thing.

But I will give it another try, there is a good chance the root cause is something simple, it needs the right persons (or group) knowledge to get to the bottom of it. If anyone wants me to check something in particular, or post a specific map or setting, please send me the steps to do it, I don’t know VCDS inside out but I am learning. I would really love to know why the fault occurs in the first place so frequently, the all the soot readings seem to be very low, is there some other restriction or a sensor that is faulty in the first place?

Thank you for the reply, I had read previously that the differential pressure sensor may be an issue. I there any way to log or test this during driving, just to know that it is giving a faulty reading? I assume that this is also known as the G450 sensor, are there are two of these together beside the bulkhed at the rear of the engine? Are they identical, and are both of them used on the DPF system, and how do I tell which is which? I am thinking that an issue with this sensor is the cause of the initial problem giving the DPF error, will it have any affect on the eventual regen not completing normally? Thank for reading, hopefully I have not asked too many questions at once....

If you really have two differential pressure sensors, one will be for the DPF and the other for the EGR.

I would suggest pulling proper repair info for this specific car.

The Differential Pressure sensor should have 3 wires Pin 1 Grey/Yellow, Pin 2 Yellow/Red, Pin 3 Green/Red, and seems to be closest to the oil filler cap.

Thanks for all the replies, I would love to be sure if one of these sensors are faulty before I change it. I selected all of the advanced measuring values that had 'diff' in them and logged the values on a short drive while the DPF fault light is on (again...). The list below (I was going to post an image but this was faster as I'm not registered on a hosting site anywhere) shows a snapshot of the values at the end of the drive, do any of these show an obvious discrepancy, like the second one of 49hPa? I saved a .csv log file of these vaules if it is of any benefit to someone as well, if I can send it to anyone.
