213,000 miles
Purchased 2009 at 90,000 miles in Orlando, drove home to New Mexico highlands (7400’—high and dry).
Most work done by indy Audi shop (Hans Wittler), but increasingly self-maintained.
July 2019, replaced notoriously self-destructing viscous fan (and pulley) with JHM, electrical fan kit, wiring issues prompted me to install in-dash manual switch.
Very few miles in 2020.
Recent issues:
Recently notified that MVD wants a vehicle inspection by January 15, 2021, even though registration is good until 2022. So my plan was to delete trouble codes, drive in to town for groceries, and see what emission codes are currently popping up, and how long they take to pop up after being cleared—22 December 2020.
Started with an auto-scan, which didn’t show any of the typical emissions codes, but some other issues, including the HVAC problem described above. Strange and unexpected since I’ve done no emissions related work on the car in many months.
Went to OBD and selected Clear DTCs. I don’t use VCDS often enough to have a smooth workflow engrained, but the result of deleting trouble codes didn’t seem right. So I began another scan. This is when the program and the car froze.
I can only assume that, in my haste, I interrupted a process I shouldn’t have.
Jumped in my wife’s Tacoma, and went shopping before the day was entirely lost.
Current Status:
I’m hoping that experienced eyes can discern possible next steps to be taken. I’m fond of this car... when it’s running. I’d like to restore that condition.

- Intermittent emissions failures for several years (eg. P0442 code EVAC small leak)—main reason I bought a cheap PC and VCDS.
- 6MT reverse freezing up, and 1st gear difficult once the car is warmed up, worse in cold weather (winter lows, 10-20˚F), began 10 months ago.
- Last trip to town (70 miles RT), driver’s side HVAC was intermittently blowing cold air on me a couple of times during ambient winter temperatures.

Current Status:
- VCDS alert reads, "Car is NOT ISO/OBC-II Compatible! If this car is a VW/Audi/Sat/Skoda Try SELECT -> Individual Controllers". The controllers are not available.
- Ignition, lights, most functions are unavailable; Seats are immobile;
- From my limited understanding of VCDS, the car is stuck in some stage of a scan;
- When I attach USB interface, key on, the interface blinks BLUE.
I’m hoping that experienced eyes can discern possible next steps to be taken. I’m fond of this car... when it’s running. I’d like to restore that condition.
