Both DPFs went back on today, along with the frame cross member. Left side is way easier than the right as far as hardware access goes. "May your bank 1 DPF clog" is my new subtle way of saying "...and the horse you rode in on"

Oh. Stupid pet tricks with air ride.

When we had the gas V8 I did most work under the car without jacking it up. I just barely fit.

The tdi is full boat, so the other day i thought, hey i can just put it in the highest position and get the room i need. Ignition on, lift the car, turn it off. Almost immediately however, it lets itself down.

So i lifted the car, placed jack stands under the right side, then turned the car off and watched the show. It is no Citroen DS, but the end result is a jacked up car with no jack. The Citroen btw, sop for tire changes is to lift the car, place a jack stand and then lower the car. It lifts the wheel off the ground like a dog peeing on a tree.

Today i finished up and thought i would just energize the ignition and the car would lift itself. Nope. It energized and stayed there, as if waking up and deciding that leaning right is the "new level"
I wasn't quite ready to fire up the engine, so i used an 8 ton bottle jack to lower it to all fours.

Anyway, with the underneath put together i pulled the top tubes off, and pulled the butterflies off. I cleaned up everything and reinstalled.

I fired it up and took it for a drive. What a scream it is when it pulls hard.

I still want to pull those upper manifolds off but for the moment I'm quite happy with the improvement.

As an addendum to this very entertaining thread, allow me to say that all V10's got Webasto's in order to get and keep the cold-running diesel up to temperature. The big difference is VWOA decided we in NA could not be trusted to use the Webasto as a "parking heater" (parkheizung). We got standheizung but could retrofit the fob, receiver and console timer to use the parkheizung.
In 2006 they made it even more difficult to retrofit by changing the Webasto's circuit board. One had to have a friend in ROW buy the board. It is a wonderful feature: one more illustration of how we in NA have been screwed by our regulators and VWOA. I think also of my Citroen's which were sold ROW with turning headlights in the 60's.

Oven cleaner made a huge difference Jack, and my left DPF was definitely plugged.

Not having any low pressure test equipment i don't know how it compares with a professional cleaning, but it means i don't have to work the pole for a while.

Right now the Touareg is inconsistent. There are times I'm getting zero boost and other times I'm ripe for a felony in one block.

I'm planning an auto scan tomorrow to see if that uncovers anything. Right as it decides if it is going to unleash the hammer i can hear a bit of a squeak for lack of a better term.

I've read those tubes across the back side can split. I couldnt get them loose when i did the butterflies on top. That whole mess at the back is tangled up with heat exchangers that look suspiciously like the oil/water heat exchanger on my Porsche (except much more complicated in the case of the VW)

Lgibson, where is the Webasto? The ones I've owned were bigger than a bread box. Is that pig tucked into the area ahead of the glove box? I know that spot holds about 10 gallons of water before that stupid whoopie cushion valve gets plugged with pine needles and it starts leaking into the foot well

The woman and i drove to Costco today (giant store for you ROW folks). About a mile before getting there we passed another white tdi Touareg. They are quite rare here in any color.

As we parked the woman in the other car pulled in next to us and commented that she saw that were in a tdi. The two ladies exchanged comments about how they love the cars, and that both had previously had gas v8 cars

The woman thought our car was newer because it is flawless inside and out. She said "oh, it's a 2007..."

I told my gf she needs to practice an emotionless "we have the v10"

The V6 TDIs are entirely adequate in a T'reg, but no more. The one I'd like to have is the more recent V8 TDI that's now out of production. It actually made a tad MORE power than the V10 yet was considerably lighter. Sadly, it was never available in NAR.

Well a glance in my driveway over the years would indicate that i don't do "entirely adequate" very well.

More cow bell.

Six month update.

Well it's been a while since I had the DPFs out of the Touareg. As enjoyable as it was I have managed to find other tasks to take up my time. A few days ago the "wallet" light came back on, with the accompanied loss of power including clown car limp mode.

So, "you gotta post a scan"

Which, if I've done my interweb searches correctly means that at 75% is too plugged for me to provoke a "emergency regen" cycle without causing the car to catch on fire - which is starting to have some appeal to be honest.

It's also showing both turbo controllers screwing up, which has been a thing. I was able to pull the right side (bank 1) controller at one point and free up the linkage but I've never been able to get the left one off. One impediment to getting the left one off is the electrical connector is jammed in by a large allen head bolt. Up until around noon today I have assumed it was an oil pressure line to the turbo. It's not, as I discovered today when I removed it, because it turns out that the power steering pump has a fluid line right there. That fluid has been oozing into the electrical connector for the turbo controller, and I've long suspected it of causing it to malfunction. I'm going to hose it out with something to cut the oil, blow it out good with an air hose and goop it with dielectric goo, then lube the upper reach of the controller arms.

Looks like I'm going to go back in and pull the bank 1 DPF and do another oven cleaner regen. I was under there today and found the rubber hoses that I replaced before were still in great shape with no damage from heat. I'm going to hope to crap that I can get the left controller off and clean it up.

Sigh.

Oh man that sux....

I weld nuts to Allen bolts which are stripped and back them out still hot.

I pulled the bank 1 DPF on Saturday. It's the more challenging of the two, requiring dropping the cross member under the transmission. 2 very large cans of oven cleaner and it was flowing nicely.

That job went as expected other than the nuts on the flange being more challenging to remove than last time. I chased the threads on the studs and bought new nuts.

I then pulled the banjo fitting bolt on the power steering line to gain access to the bank 2 turbo controller and let it drain. Then i spent most of yesterday trying to get the f***ing electrical connector off. Finally succeeded. Blasted out both halves with solvent, then potted it with dialectric grease and put it back together, refilling with pentosin fluid.

A question for you Ross techs:

With Durametric for my other car I'm able to trigger things like the SAI, electric change over valve, etc by selecting them from a menu.

Is there a way with VCDS to cause turbo controllers to move through their range? It would be super helpful at diagnosing an intermittent cut out.

Output Tests. But I'm not sure what's available on your engine.

Please describe the CUT and post a complete auto-scan of the other car.....

Is the requested boost in a deviation positive or negative when logging the MAP?

When the CUT happens........ does it come back or is it dead limp until next ignition key cycled?

It's a jekyl and hyde car. Some days you could pull a building off a foundation with it and other days you could have a metro bus riding your ass up a hill. Key cycling wakes it up a bit less than half the time.

The code I most often get (in fact the counter has maxed out at 255) is "turbo controller bank 2 implausible signal", and thats IIRC and this week that's a stretch. I'll look up the specific codes when I get home, as I auto scanned several times in a row to catch anything that popped up.

At the beginning of the past weekend we had MIL and flashing glow plug. VCDS showed bank 1 DPF 75% plugged, both turbo controllers tango uniform and some crap about the key (battery was replaced a month or so back). I haven't used the cable to see what my current DPF percentage is but the light is out and I'm on to the other tasks.

[side trip]
When I had the banjo bolt for the power steering apart I noticed that the crush washers were in poor shape. They were rough and had signs of that 3M gray goo some ass clown used to glue my porsche crankcase halves together. I went to the local car parts store to see if I could match the crush washers. You'd think no one ever bought a crush washer before. I could only get as close as 'bracketing' the ones I had for a match, and found some made of copper. The smaller ones wouldn't fit on the banjo bolt and the big ones were sloppy but looked like they would work, especially if I put some care into making sure they didn't seat off center.

Upon refilling the car I checked for leaks, took it for a 20 minute drive and got home and checked again. I did have to add some fluid to replace the air in the lines, but it looked dry under the car. Well Monday came around and my girlfriend drove the car to work and it sprang a leak (Worse possible day, as I was extracting my son from his apartment complex after he got his ass beat by some 300 pound pacific islanders and managed to smash my phone in the door of the uhaul).

Local dealer came up with the correct crush washers for $12.45, a slight mark up of the $1ea that Jim Ellis VW sells them for. I installed them last night and torqued it, refilled with yet another $28 quart of Pentosin fluid and went for a drive.

The car was a monster, but about 15 minutes into turning my neighborhood into a crime scene I stopped and worked the power steering to help work the air out. Upon moving again it was back to a meek non turbo diesel. It's not in limp mode, as it will get around but it's clear that more than the most mild of boost is right out.
[/side trip]

employing googlefoo often results in redirecting to the VCDS published codes and the suggested solutions. Unfortunately they are as simple as:
Check wiring
Check controllers
Replace turbos.

There isn't much wire to see with that behemoth jammed in the hole. I had to devise a tourniquet made of a strand of parachute cord to clamp the connector ears and then get a long screw driver in there to work the plug apart. Once you get your grubby fingers on the connector you may be able to blindly follow a few inches of it, so I'm not sure where it even goes from there.

The entire time we've owned the car I've targeted the controllers. The right side controller is far more accessible than the left side. I can reach it to disconnect the wiring, and I can get a wrench on the three small bolts holding the controller to the attach bracket. I can smear miracle lubricant on the connector end of the push rod and with some trickery I can get some on the top pivot. With the controller free of the attach bracket I can exercise the push rod and verify it moves freely.

With the left side controller I can get one of the mounting bolts off, and by farting around for an hour with a 10mm combination wrench I could probably get off one more. I can get to a place where I can spray lubricant on the lower pivot point of the push rod but no friggin way can I get to the top.

Add to this, controllers aren't available.

Leads us to item 3: replace the turbos. Likely the turbos are mechanically fine, but controllers come with turbos attached to the tune of about $1200 for the pair.

That's an engine drop. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent trying to avoid doing so. Dropping the engine would allow way easier access to all the BS on the back side of the engine and to clean in entire intake tract.

So I'm looking at buying a lift. I can devise a cradle to support the engine and sub frame, and lift the vehicle up off of the engine. Doing the math it would appear that one round trip of engine sub frame would more than pay for the lift which would be in nearly constant use at my house (two german cars and all...).

As I started the thread, "And so it begins". Damn I knew this day was going to happen.

:-)

Copper washers can be heated or sanded and slightly lubed while crushed goes a long way.

I also use lock wire to fish the WG actuator to exercise.

Sometimes I attach a spring to the lock wire or WG. Then load, and then massage Kano kroil into the mechanical parts while hooking and moving the leaver.

Further I shoot harmonics in with taps from a rod or screw driver attached to an air gasket scraper or mild air hammer. This works really well if also done with distilled water and sodium hydroxide ....rinsed and lubed.

Couple comments:
1)The V10 maintenance schedule specifies Hot Bolt Paste on the turbo actuators but that item never made it into owners manual. I use a dab on the end of a welding rod down from under the hood. Corrosion is a real problem unless you live in the desert. Many a turbo has been replaced under warranty with 30 hours engine R&R for a missing eclip on the actuator.
2)The Club Touareg forum has posts from a couple guys who have successfully done the drive train removal at home, one by removing the front bodywork.

Crazy, isn't it? I've thought about it, as I'll probably be in the same boat someday.

Engine and transmission R&R at dealer, 48 hours @ $95/hr: $4,560
or a MaxJax and a lift table together: ~$2,900

My girlfriend called vw today to get a quote on a turbo replace with engine R/R. $6500 but they would need the VIN to be sure.

So this was in the scan from the other night:

Not sure I've seen "missing messages" before.

After wondering here if there was a way for VCDS to move my turbo controllers I stumbled across a contraption some brit made that I could plug into a controller and move it full scale and also gauge the effort. The device is super simple looking as I'm sure it would be if one had the wiring pinouts and appropriate amount of smoke to be pumping through those wires.

I'll look up the hot bolt paste. Wow I'd sure like to see a way to get it on all four pivot points.
