I replaced my steering wheel and about a month later my airbag light came on. My vcds doesn't find a fault?
Should it be showing a fault code? I see module 15 in the gateway scan but no data in the scan. How do I debug this? I suspect the ground inside the steering wheel but would like to use vcds to debug this if possible.

Yes, 01-Engine and 15-Airbags are conspicuous in there absence from this scan.

Of course if the airbag module is completely off-line, the airbag light will be on. The light is on by default and a happy airbag module turns it off.

I would start by checking all fuses.

In addition to Uwe's suggested path....

The ground for the airbag module maybe inadequate too, causing the K line to have an issue & since other modules are seeing the 01 & 15 on CAN without broadcast error.

To test this theory check it and block 125 values in respective other modules for CAN broadcast and trace the ground or blown fuse.

In rare cases cluster could be faulty or harness plug back side of cluster could be contaminated with coolant or corrosion bridge FOD.

I checked all the fuses. JPPSG was a litte too deep for my understanding so I borrowed a snap-on scan tool. I was able to read the airbag module with this scanner and I fixed the short in the driver side seatbelt...airbag warning light is now off. I would like to know how is it possible for my vcds not able to read the airbag module yet the snap-on scanner can? I downloaded/installed the latest software and firmware for my vcds with still no improvement. I have the usb hex-v2 Dual-K & can, H10-004333 purchased in 2017. I do have scans back in 2017 where it did read the airbag module...but I have updated the firmware and software many times since then. Is it possible the new software/firmware is the problem?

That is a darn good question, but without us having access to the car and using some additional test equipment, very difficult to answer.

Just out of curiosity what happens if you download VCDS lite configure and try to scan the modules and have you tried K line different baud rates?

I haven't tried the lite or different baud rates....It used to work...I have scans where it worked. I have updated my software and firmware since the time it did work. Where do i try different baud rates?

Jack, VCDS-Lite isn't gonna work on a HEX-V2, at all.

Besides, if I read #4 correctly, the problem is no longer reproducible?

The problem is reproduceable in that I still can't read the airbag module...no response from the controller. I haven't had time to try the baud rates. Maybe this weekend.

I was not able to find anywhere in the configuration menu a place to try different baud rates. The baud rate is greyed out at the options screen and set to 0.

I did find something interesting. If I go straight to the airbag module, the controller connects. Once I do a full scan it disables the ability to read the airbag (will not read airbag when doing a full scan). The full scan does something so I can't connect to the airbag module until I power everything off and go straight to the airbag module to read it.

I did try and login to the airbag module but did not have the code? I am thinking if I could login, maybe that sets something so that it could read the airbag module all the time?

Otherwise it seems like a vcds software problem? I am thinking back in 2017 the software and firmware worked to read the airbag on a full scan. I doubt all the version changes in those would add features that would be useful for a 2002 car. Do people go back in software and firmware?

Software is possible, firmware is not.

However, I really doubt this is the problem. We have plenty of customers working on older cars and I don't recall any other reports like this.
