First of all, thank you for accepting me on this forum.

This is the first time I attempt to make modifications to my car, I don't have VCDS yet but from my readings I will have to buy, this is the reason I registered to this forum and because there's a lot of knowledge in the users in this forum and for that I wouldn't choose anywhere else to ask my questions.

All started when I saw that in the U.S. VW cars are being recalled for airbag replacement due to cars being affected by the Takata scandal, here in Europe nothing happens. My Golf Mk6 is on the list, I contacted VW Portugal and they don't care...the truth is European brands do what they want here in Europe, and nothing happen, european brands are protected. Like the DieselGate scandal...

So I need help for doing this,
My Golf is equipped with MFSW like this one:
<a href="https://ibb.co/7jtPy8w"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/tQpgCk7/20190902-225051.jpg" alt="20190902-225051" border="0"></a>
And the Steering Module is this one:
<a href="https://ibb.co/HDhtYQt"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/VWwgD8g/20191012-153441.jpg" alt="20191012-153441" border="0"></a>

I bought a MK7 wheel that I'm waiting to be delivered:
<a href="https://ibb.co/R09NsLs"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/jMTzQ7Q/20191014-090816.jpg" alt="20191014-090816" border="0"></a> <a href="https://ibb.co/kqbCszH"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/QYSw3hb/received-431497344140671.jpg" alt="received-431497344140671" border="0"></a>

I already have the airbag, and I've modified the harness to match the mk6 connections:
<a href="https://ibb.co/7zZLQr1"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/fSyL9rx/5PIN.jpg" alt="5PIN" border="0"></a>

From searching the web I believe that the buttons on the Mk7 wheel are 5G0 959 442. Is there a change it will work with my steering module?
I have the opportunity of buying a 1k8 959 442 module, I read that this one will work, is it true? And what about the 6c0 959 442 C or M (that I only find with CC)? I want to keep simple without the CC on the steering wheel and with the illumination working as the original.

And for the VCDS, what do I need? Which one I will have to buy? What coding I will have to do? I'm a noob in this world of VAG modifications.

Thank you for your time reading my post.

The strange thing is that Toyota ARE recalling cars in Europe (the UK at least) for the Takata scandal - my uncle's Toyota has been recalled twice, because the first replacement airbag was also from the faulty batches.

Yes, in Portugal they had recalled 30.000 cars...but don't forget that Toyota is not European, like Mazda is recalling too! DieselGate scandal started in the U.S....if it wasn't for the United States today we wouldn't know anything

I know BMW has been doing them here in NZ - quite a number have been done; E46 and E39 plus others.

Not sure on VW here - mine aren't affected and I don't reremember seeing it mentioned - the ABS recall has resulted in a few free modules in late MK5 and 6 though :-)

My Parents 2006 Subaru Legacy 3.0 R spec-b was done about a year ago! Both passenger and driver.

Nelson: Hi. Last question first (and I hope that Uwe forgives me for not promoting another sale from Ross-Tech).

If you think that you will tinker with VAG vehicles in the future, most certainly consider purchasing VCDS. As to which particular version to purchase - it depends entirely on your needs.

If you just want to buy a low-cost entry device: one suited to your mk6 Golf and other "not-new" VAG vehicles and one with sufficient "grunt" to allow you to learn how to use a diagnostic device - then perhaps consider purchasing a second hand HEX + CAN model. HEX+CAN was until recently the work-horse in the VCDS stable. It's still a good unit - but it is not compatible with newer model VAG vehicles.

In the alternative that you want to buy a more modern tool with wider compatibility with the newer VAG vehicles - then the current HEX-NET series models is best. There are a range of these newer models from which to choose depending on how many VIN licenses you consider to be appropriate and whether you want the added flexibility of using VCDS as a stand alone dongle with wireless connection to your laptop computer/mobile phone/tablet.

BUT, HEX-NET is more expensive - you simply need to decide if the added cost is worth paying for the additional features,

Now to the substantive topic in your post - I hate to be the harbinger of bad news, but I suspect that the project will be problematic because of a change in the basic design of the multifunction steering wheel control module.

Flat bottom steering wheels were introduced into Golf model cars when the design changed to MQB platform.

In previous Golf models like your mk6, the multi-function steering wheel module (it's called E221) was previously a LIN slave to the steering column electronics control unit J527 (see the 2nd part of the diagram below)

In the MQB platform version of the Golf however, the multi-function steering wheel module ((which VW calls J453 in their literature) is a LIN slave of what VCDS reports as the CAN Gateway module @ address hex19 (or, what VW calls the "Data bus diagnostic module" - J533). However, and notwithstanding that the comms traffic is direct between J533 and J453 module on MQB cars - for practical wire routing reasons, the CAN bus signals are still transmitted via the coil connectors and the steering column electronics control (as was previously the case for older version Golf cars) - see the 1st part of the diagram below.

This change in design will need to be considered when you connect a mk7 style module to a mk6 CAN network - alas

Don

There is also the HEX-V2, which is compatible with all the latest cars, and very affordable with a 3-VIN license. ;)

Thank you all for your answers.
#DV52 thank you for the diagrams,

I'm not too negative in relation to this project. I'm trying to "kill two birds with one stone", first because I don't feel safe driving my Golf knowing that is listed on the Takata affected cars, driver side, and second because the mk7 steering is damn beautiful with badges or without badges.
I investigated the web and found people that did the change and also found people with problems with that change, I found brazilians that did it to basic cars...with everything working (I can share links if you want because the youtube videos are in portuguese), witch means that this change is possible.

My conclusion is that all resumes to the buttons modules on the steering and the steering column module. No one is sharing that information, some because they do it to earn some money (the brazilians...).
I saw 6c0 959 442 C modules working straight with only adaptation via VCDS (Polo 6C probably not MQB, I don't know) even changing the stalks activates the CC on the steering. Modules 1k8 959 442 everything working but illumination (some guys solder a pin inside to solve that problem). And I came a cross a patch module from #SpaceWalker that solves de MQB problem installed on a Sirocco:

<a href="https://ibb.co/ZcqWqKN"><img src="https://i.ibb.co/1RF8FKb/35262412al.jpg" alt="35262412al" border="0"></a>

So my question is, has anyone done it? Is there a easy way? Can someone share some information? Can I contact SpaceWalker?

If I'm successful, sure I will share everything I learn about it. Because this project is coming from a feel of insecurity and therefore a need, and I expect to help others.

Im ressurecting this. I have acquired various parts from a PQ based GLI (2016-18: Steering wheel, airbag, harnesses, etc.) and will try to see what the quickest/easiest was to do this without any kind of external translation device.

And yes, 3 years since your last post and still couldnt find anything simple and straightforward as an answer to this retrofit!

Biggest issue is finding a 5K0953569 part that doesnt have the Kessy/ESCL module requirement (i.e. must have the electrical connector to plug in the normal lock cylinder wires on the bottom right side of the clockspring)
