I have a caddy 2K that has no indicators/turn signals on the front working either one the stalk or on the hazard switch, there is no output at the headlamp assembly and I’ve swapped bulb holders and bulbs and checked all the fuses.

I’ve read that this can be caused by either a faulty indicator stalk or hazard switch, what would be the best test procedure using the measuring blocks within VCDS to narrow down the issue and determine if it’s one of the switches or the J519 before I start swapping bits

Auto scan is below

Thanks in advance

Ian

If the stalk were to blame you wouldnt have any blinkers at all. An appropriate DTC is stored in the BCM (module 09) so there’s probably a wiring problem between the headlights and the BCM.

Did you check BCM for water ingress and trace run overlay to isolate and disconnection of M5 at BCM to see, also look at block values in VCDS to check stalk or EFS?

Observe circuit in WD first.

Thanks for the reply

That was my initial thought but as its both sides and I have no hazards or turn signal on the front and the rest of the headlamp works fine im trying to ascertain if its the hazard switch or the BCM as its unlikely to be a broken wire both sides

I'm pretty sure there is a way in VCDS using the measuring blocks to narrow it down

Thanks Jack - I'll have to find the wiring diagram as my ELSAWIN isnt working ATM, any idea which MVB it is or I'll have to have a play around later

Are they not labeled in captions in VCDS?

You know I always thought that OBD blocks should of been part of WD & for every relevant component if I was writing an RTFB!

I also think the microfiche should of had every N&G numbers too!

They may be labelled but TBH I was just being lazy as I'm not connected to the car and you cant look up the options unless you are physically connected, the wiring diagrams arent the best and the canbus whilst its great for retrofits is just a pain when you are trying to trace an error, my suspicion is the hazard switch or the BCM and both are difficult to test

I noticed this vehicle still has a CECM instead of BCM, but the same still applies. Though it's statistically unlikely that both plus wires for the front blinkers went out simultaneously. I'd hazard a guess the CECM could be at fault. What if you clear the faults - will the very same fault appear in the CECM ?

Yes faults for both indicators come straight back up, this is why I was trying to see if there was a test routine as I'm pretty sure its electronic and not electrical

done some further tests this evening and looking at the measuring blocks it show the front indicators energise for about a second using both the stalk and the hazard switch and then stop and a fault is logged for both front indicators so I guess I now have to pull the CECM and see if I have output at the CECM end and then if I have test the continuity to the headlamp assembly unless anyone has any other ideas ?

Interestingly enough it appears that the passenger door has had a wiring repair to the electric window motor so I dont know if this could be related in any way possibly ...

We finally resolved this, after removing the CECM to test the wiring the circuits tested OK but the CANBUS appears to turn off the circuit immediately it senses there is a bulb failure .

Therefore when testing at the headlamp you get no voltage. We then tested the circuit for continuity from the CECM plug to the wires in the headlamp which was OK but found there was no continuity at the bulb holder contact points caused by bad tracks in the headlamp itself where the bulb holder connects.

Despite cleaning everything we couldn’t get a decent contact even after replacing the bulb holders which apparently are a common fault so this was eventually cured by placing a blob of solder in the contact points to provide a good contact by effectively raising the contact points.

Just crappy design as both the headlamps are original VW items so hope this helps someone who encounters a similar issue

Thanks for everyone’s help
