Hello everyone,

My name is Max, and while I am waiting for my newly ordered package of Enthusiast device to come - decided to introduce myself here :)

I live in Cleveland (Ohio) suburb, and have two VAG cars in family - my wife's 2009 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI and my own 2012 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI. Love these cars (and always did since my very first Passat B5 many years ago), but sometimes instead of me driving them - they drive me nuts :mad:

Being a pretty greedy guy I hate overpaying in dealership for even simple diagnostic, not even speaking of how dealers handle problems (change it all. replace it all. get the new one - all!). Thus, I try to do as much as I can myself on my cars, which is really not that convenient with simple $20 scanner from Amazon :) Especially, when I google the problem - and it is either "Replace it all !" (couple thousand bucks, BTW), or "Use VCDS in this order and you are OK!"

All this finally moved me to get the nice tool, hopefully I can figure out how to use it properly :) Not sure if this is still true in new releases, but one friend of mine used to say - you can do anything with it. everything. Just don't touch airbag module ever ! :)

Welcome to the forum.

Your friend is not quite accurate. On the airbags, the issue of the airbags when scanning was that it set a fault code. This was solved both in the factory tool and in VCDS somewhere around 2004 - around the time I arrived at RT.. There is no reason to stay away from the airbag modules. Care must be taken if you are doing any coding or tests of the airbags.. That could lead to trouble. Always be sure what you are doing, never do things without consulting those who know (the official manuals and such), and last, if playing with the airbags, be smart and be outside the car or in the back seat!

As to VCDS doing all things - that too is a bit misleading. VCDS will do all things possible but there exist tweaks and such that people request that violate current law, morals, or ethics. For instance, many want RT to help them turn on Video In Motion. We are not going to assist with that as it is currently against law to do so. We are not going to help disable emission systems for that too violates law. Last, we are not going to be able to assist with Immoblizer defeats and so on owing to the fact that we would inadvertently be assisting the thieves who steal cars.

Then there are some functions that require a dialog between the factory servers, the tool, and the car. Immobilizer is an example of such a system. As VWoA and VAG world-wide do not allow Ross-Tech to connect our tool to their servers, we cannot do any function that requires information from the servers.

In general, VCDS can and does do a lot -- mostly in the support of common maintenance functions. The Tweaks and such available are the gravy. They come about owing to the tool's ability to code, adapt, and perform basic settings. These are needed to repair and maintain a car. That these lead to enhancing/modifying a ride is as I wrote - gravy.

Thank you for your entry Bruce :) Actually, the conversation about airbag module dates back to 2008, I am not really sure what was the version of software used then :)

Actually, my goal is to troubleshoot the problems with my cars, not really tweaking anything. Like, for example, Q7 currently has a problem of electronic steering control moving only back-forward, but not up and down. Forum has a procedure to try to solve it instead of paying for the whole part replacement. Or TPMS system failure warning - I want to find what it is before dealer upsells me with the diagnosis I can't verify, and if it is only a matter of dead sensor - I can fix it myself. Anyways, I will come back here for certain advices when I have the tool and will be able to attach scan report :)

First use of VCDS and results:

Got my Hex-V2 today and spent quite a bit of time with my car, laptop and VCDS. Happy-happy now :cool:

So, the short intro:
2012 Audi Q7 3.0 TDI, 65K miles on odometer, bought a week ago. Test-drive went perfectly, simple OBD scanner did not reveal any problems. Some wear and tear, sure, but overall nice car with only one obvious problem - steering wheel electronic adjustment worked only on back-and-forth, but not up-and-down. Got it very reasonably priced. Drove home, and next day the errors began to pop-up.

Symptoms :

"TPMS malfunction!" indicator pops up along with the yellow "flat tire warning" sign. This signal was always accompanied with flashing "AAS" yellow lamp. Sometimes steady "ESP warning" and "ABS warning" yellow indicators popped up as well. Simultaneously, air suspension greyed out all the modes except currently selected.

Turn off the car - restart - everything's OK for a while, no AAS lights, nothing. Wait a bit idling or start moving - TPMS error jumps in and immediately triggers AAS and ESP/ABS illumination back.

While in "ignition on" mode no warning lights. Suspension is fully available, doing everything what is needed, up and down, load mode, jack mode - everything OK.

What was done before the Hex-V2 was received:

1. fuses - checked. OK
2. Tire pressure - corrected. Did not help.
3. Visual inspection of somewhat achievable underbody sensors - OK.
4. Suspension tested by leaving the car at all the available levels overnight with measurements of height before and after - totally OK, except the fact that real measurements deviate a bit from factory declared and rear right is always a bit higher. No noise from suspension pump heard (but here I can't be hundred percent sure since I have no idea how it sound when it is bad), basically, I did not hear anything except engine running.

Nothing suspicious found so far :confused:. Time to do some magic :D

Ignoring small problems like door handles not recognizing touch-sensors outside and backup camera error (these things work perfectly, by the way, not sure why there is an error), and low signal from key 1 (I guess, changing battery will help), main suspects are identified:

4C-Tire Pressure II -- Status: Malfunction 0010

All three have pretty much the same in common - 01316 - ABS Control Module, and 01826 - Sensor for Steering Angle (G85) and 00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85).

Looks like steering sensor is the root of all problems. Use the corresponding guide on basic setting for G85 http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/00778 - done ! all three errors are gone and did not appear during short test-drive.

What we have - everything OK (except key and doors, yes). BTW, backup camera error is gone as well, surprisingly.

Next - use the guide from http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A6_(4F)_Central_Electronics, and reset steering wheel to basic settings - voila!:thumbs: everything works like charm !


What I don't quite understand due to lack of technical knowledge - why ABS problem triggered suspension light. My only guess is that since AAS is adjusted depending on car speed - this information should be transferred to AAS by ABS system, the only explanation I have.

Another thing to do - probably calibrate the suspension levels. Deviation from standard values are not that big, but they are present along with rear-right corner even more deviating.

Overall result of the evening: almost total happiness. All that bothered me was resolved. What did not bother (minor issues) - remembered and saved in logs to think about it later. Will see how it worked out in longer period of time, hopefully the magic worked :D
