Dana:

I completely understand that a repair history can be helpful, but sometimes there is no meaningful repair history and I see this as such a case.

The recent history of this car:

The car was obviously registered and driven for 160,000 miles or so and then it was stolen and sometime later recovered and the Insurance Company auctioned it off. The buyer who got it at the auction must have encountered a blown transmission because when I bought the car from him the transmission was dry of lubricant and had been taken apart and put back together with half the rollers for the roller bearings on the 5th/6th gear shaft missing. I put a new transmission in it and did a lot of driving it but never could get it smogged so I put the project off for the winter and didn't start dealing with it until June of this year. Along the way I put a rebuilt head on it because it had signs of overheating. Since it still wouldn't smog I ordered Ross-Tech to set SAI readiness which i had come to understand as my problem. While waiting for Ross Tech I rebuilt the old box and put it back in the ccar to road test it. When RT arrived, I did some scans that are still on my HD but they are beginning about three weeks ago. That means there is over a year prior when the car went through three owners; all the data from that period is lost.

Again, I will post those scans I have taken since about a month ago if you still want them, but I am sure they hold no valid information for the current problem. IMO we (I) have to proceed as if this is a car without a history.

If you wish to engage in the diagnosis of this problem I will appreciate that help. But I'm a bit overdone with the kind of going in circles as I've encountered from all the "helpers" here so far.

I know the mouth piece, 8 ball and dice set are going to be the OP's first choice's but for others interested in a more comprehensive approach, you may enjoy this video.

All information is helpful. If there's reason you don't think it's relevant, I'd suggest posting it anyway with a comment as to why you don't feel it's relevant.

Thank you for the history.

Your car should be setting SAI readiness on its own after a couple normal drive cycles. It's not doing it automatically, and it's not succeeding even when explicitly commanded. That means some of the test preconditions aren't being met, or the test itself is failing in some way. Each component test has a lot of preconditions, and the tests need to run in a certain order. Some of the preconditions might not make sense at first glance. And, SAI is one of those things that tuners are known to mess with.

The guidance you've been getting is necessary in order to find the root cause. Recoding the ECU forces certain things back to a fresh factory default, so you can start from scratch. Yes it's really a thing. Clearing DTCs resets all the readiness checks so they'll run again, and hopefully re-trip any DTCs along the way that we're missing for the prerequisite tests. It also shows us if certain readiness bits immediately go back to zero unexpectedly, which is one way of confirming a tuner has been in there messing around.

The way forward will involve running some more tests and collecting some more data. These steps may or may not make immediate sense to you. If you're curious as to the rationale, feel free to ask, but outright rejecting guidance won't fix your car.

TL;DR: Jack is trying to help you.

Thanks for the history.

Those Mk4 era ECMs can retain fault codes and readiness for years when sitting in storage so with any luck the oldest scans you have may help in the readiness bit area. If any number of individuals that had their hands on that car during or after it was stolen cleared codes however.. they may add zero clarity. Either way, post up whatever you have.

Jack's reset song and dance isn't a waste of time. Although the ECM could be corrupt (i.e. tuned) or faulty that's the best way to reset everything without having a flash update completed at the dealer or gambling with a used ECM. Like the screen size tweak from the Options screen you can also change the WSC, Importer and Equipment numbers to values like 54321 | 321 | 54321 and Save so all future re-coding and adaptation modifications in VCDS result in the new values rather than "stealth" mode.

If you need any assistance confirming everything was reset let us know and post the most recent scan. My next suggestion would be inspecting that MAF to make sure it isn't aftermarket and we should see if BS such as groups 037 and 107 happen to pass without aborting or never testing on.

Since it still wouldn't smog I ordered Ross-Tech to set SAI readiness which i had come to understand as my problem.

VCDS *cannot* set the readiness bit for you, as already stated by UWE the creator of VCDS, and WILL NOT because it is ILLEGAL for it to do so.

VCDS can help you *diagnose* what module, or system of components, of your vehicle may be failing, which in turn are causing the readiness test to fail.

VCDS and this forum is not a replacement for the factory vehicle repair manuals and diagnostic procedures, nor is any other diagnostic device. Diagnostic devices can only tell you what the vehicle systems report and only make what configuration changes that are allowed within the module's programming.

No one here, except maybe Jack, can spit out some words that will magically cause your vehicle to suddenly set readiness on it's own.

VCDS can indeed tell the ECU to enter a test mode, and in individual blocks in "basic settings" & to conduct a specific test or a qualified monitor or even non qualified tests.

Qualified bit ID monitor AC, OXS, EVAP/LDP, SAI or CAT

Unqualified would be like auxiliary vacuum pump or knock sensors.

This is what is know and described in the repair manual as Forcing readiness monitor tests.

Forcing readiness monitor tests are a separate type test & available in the diagnostic stack, they are with slightly different parameters than the tests being done during a routine or normal DCY.

Tests in the ME7.1.1 use binary command observation tests and block on/off switched tests......but both are done in " basic settings."
No one here, except maybe Jack, can spit out some words that will magically cause your vehicle to suddenly set readiness on it's own.

It isn't magic and I just don't flip bits EVER!.........these are real tests as defined in the RTFB.

Intake air temp issues will cause SAI not to test. If the car sees the temp too high, it will prevent the SAI test from running. What numbers are you seeing in Measuring block group 4 block 4?

If the only tech support to be found here comes from this jack thing, please expedite my RMA so I can be done with this waste of time.

You realize that those scans were done weeks ago don't you?

That's why I've been reluctant to bother posting them.

Those scans have more useful information than the newer scans you posted. Did you correct the issues to the MAF or Intake air temp? Both of those components can cause the SAI not to test, even if they are not triggering codes in the newer scans.

I've never been aware of any MAF problem.

As far as the temps are concerned, when I tested in early afternoon my engine area was exposed to an intense afternoon sun so the intake temps were sometimes very high and caused me to stop testing.

I don't thing there were any temp problems in yesterday's scans.

I have a spare MAF sensor and I could swap this one out easy enough, but it reads about 3.5 gpm when idling and I suspect that's about right.

showed that bit not set (Readiness: 0000 1000) with an actual DTC that may explain SAI readiness problems:

16795 - Secondary Air Injection System
P0411 - 35-00 - Incorrect Flow Detected

Although we should still look at that MAF I would make sure the combi valve holds vacuum. If it isn't a PITA to remove you may even want to see if the valve moves freely and opens fully in addition to looking for plugged ports in the head. That doesn't happen often but at high mileage it wouldn't be unheard of.

Key on, engine Output tests won't help with readiness but the testing the fuse, relay and pump should be possible via [Output Tests]. I realize you had good flow when checking it on a cold start but it is far easier to hear everything when the engine isn't running.

They indicate at some point there were problems with the MAF and IAT sensors, both of which are integral to running the SAI test. Intake temp has to be in a certain range, MAF has to be in a certain range, and the ECU wants to see a change in air-fuel ratio to verify SAI airflow to pass the test, which is done by cross-comparison of MAF and O2 sensors during the test.

I think you have a perception that the SAI test isn't passing because you haven't found the right hammer to hit your SAI pump with yet. That's not the case. From earlier in this thread you already said the SAI pump runs when given voltage. So it works. But you've seen fault codes for two of the sensors the ECU needs to test and validate SAI performance. That's important.

MAF sensor is of particular interest because they're a common failure item, and worse, there are a flood of cheap clone replacement parts that don't perform right and cause hard-to-find problems that don't necessarily throw up DTCs right away.
