I purchased a T5 van which had crashed. I knew the previous owner had done some work - replacement steering wheel i think - at least it doesn't look like it's fired. Also passenger facia shows signs of having been opened.
I now want to fix all faults, back to a healthy and safe condition. I will purchase new/used(but good) seatbelt tensioners etc..

Question - will I need to replace the associated airbag sensors on the vehicle? or just the airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners as listed in the scan.

Thanks, Sean

Based on what I see there, I suspect you're going to have to replace the Airbag Control Module.

All your codes except the Crash Data ones are flagged "Intemittent". What happens if you clear them?

NOTE: Please do this with yourself and your computer out of the path of any possible deployment just in case!

They all immediately re-appear Uwe. I've looked at the passenger and driver seatbelt units, both have been replaced with USED units, so for now I will assume the driver and passenger airbags were also replaced. (no side curtains) so I am thinking they probably did this then realised they coiuld not clear the error code/light witout a new Airbag CU and VCDS and left it alone.
I've ordered a new Airbag CU, will see what happens when I install that. The one I have ordered has the original parts stock/box sticker showing the index no. (not the number in the square box to the RH side of main p/no label)

Er ...a unashamed bump...!
So were you thinking the intermittents are the stored crash data? They certainly appear that quickly I don't think it can be actual faults from units getting tested and failing that quickly.

Also...are there other satellite crash sensors such as under seats that might need replacing please?

thanks, Sean Swansea UK

Yes - the scan shown above is after clearing codes.

Without a complete auto scan of whole car or at least year/make/model tough to answer.
Usually if airbags, seat belts and sensors are fixed and done right these codes will clear.
So I say something is wrong with all this stuff still.

The crash data can't clear from module once it sets a crash!
Module has to be replaced after crash. There are places to have them rebuilt but safety is important!
Used module will need to be programed to your car and exact part# is needed.

But I say if you install another module all the other codes except crash data will return because they have a problem and won't clear.

Good Luck

It's a 2012 A1 1.6 diesel with stop/start. Had a rear end shunt years ago, been fine ever since but started discharging battery overnight, intermittently! real ball ache for my daughter.

So the part (airbag controller) arrived, but it did not have the full p/n information , and hence I do not know the /XX index no. that I think I need to code in the new controller. Is this a showstopper?
I've also attached a new scan taken after the new controller is installed, (albeit probably incorrectly coded now).
the new controller has definitely changed things, the 'old' faults seem to have cleared but have been replaced with a 'new' set that I think are maybe spurious? for example I don't think the vehicle had side airbags, but the error log is showing errors with them.
Is this because it is looking at 'old' information contained in the controller?
FYI ... I can now clear codes, and they do not immediately re-appear as they were doing before, instead it is not until exit/re enter the controller that I see the stored codes.

What index did you order? The old one was 3C. Hopefully the new one is as well! If so, it should accept the same coding as the old one, 13123. If it doesn't, then your new airbag controller is the wrong one for the car.

Hi Uwe. I just went on the p/n 1C0909605. Are you saying a more specific one for the vehicle is needed? I thought they were all pretty much the same and that the coding process is what matches it to the features in the vehicle? If this is not the case where is the 3C version information stored, as it does not appear on the label? I am buying NEW but from Ebay, so I may need to bite the bullet and get a specific one from VW but that is C. $700 (£450 UK pounds!)

You need to match the Index...........to PR-codes.

In the case of the part # can be the same and many different index's and each has its own unique coding table.

Hi Uwe. I just went on the p/n 1C0909605. Are you saying a more specific one for the vehicle is needed?
Correct. In the case of these airbag modules, as well as come central convenience modules, the basic part number is not sufficient. There is an additional "index" or "color code" that has to be specified to get the correct module. Based on your original scan, the correct spec is: "1C0 909 605 A /03C".

If you're going to do that, I would urge you to have them double-check it by VIN.

Yes Uwe. I said VW, actually I used a branch of a UK firm TPS, they specialise in VW OEM parts. It will actually come from VW themsleves in Germany though. the guy seemed pretty switched on checked the VIN and came up with the p/n all on his own :-) so pretty confident it's the correct one. It's P/N 1C0909605T0 3C

Some promising info though...I've now tried 3 controllers including my original. Each one presented a different set of fault codes - mostly for features not installed. (side bags eg) Neither of the new ECU ones presented any of the original codes, apart from a high resistance on drivers airbag which appeared on all three. So I'm hoping that is my only real fault. Ho hum...we'll see.

Big thanks for the help BTW. I'm an engineer, but not from a motor background. Hence my default is to fix stuff myself, which I can do - but I have none of the trade acumen you guys have.

Right, that's what the "index" or "color code" determines; what equipment is installed, and in many cases, not just whether it is or isn't installed, but they type of equipment that's installed. There's precisely one correct coding for each index, and that's the only coding that the module will accept.

I suspect the control modules with the same root part number (disregarding the index) are all the same and the difference between the indexes is a parameter table of some sort, but this is not something that's accessible via the diagnostic APIs that VCDS uses.

hi folks. My new airbag controller arrived and appears to have installed OK. I'm left with just one 'real' bug. The loom that connects the Airbag & horn inside the S Wheel seems to have a self-destruct feature included. The plastic housing on the rear of the airbag connector has what looks like a coil embedded in it that has burnt out and makes the loom open circuit.
So now I have a new loom on order! All other faults have cleared OK though, so looking good...just another week long wait! p/n 7H0 971 584 H.

Airbag connector cable fitted...all faults cleared, airbag light off. It's a wrap. MOT test on Thursday. :)

Thanks for all the help. Sean Swansea UK.
