Hi. I'm getting ready to buy vcds

I need to change my steering control module vag number from

1k0953549af to 1k0953549bp
Can this be done in vdcs and if it can how do I do it?

Many thanks.

Hi Lee,

As far as I can tell 1K0 953 549 AF supered to 1K0 953 549 AK > 1K0 953 549 BK

That aligns with this page:

The alternative BP control unit you plan on purchasing and installing has a note: #2: Manual Transmission only, does NOT support Ignition Key Lock.

I would play it safe and get the direct replacement of 1K0 953 549 BK but if this is a manual transmission car you should be OK.

Either way, you will want to save a complete Auto-Scan with the old unit installed so the factory Coding is saved. That makes coding the replacement unit significantly easier after installing it.

The VIN would be helpful however I do want to clarify the VAG number cannot be changed with a scan tool. Instead, the VAG number changes when you replace the part and that's where we circle back to the VIN to help confirm the parts catalog shows the part numbers (i.e. VAG numbers) we discussed.

Providing a compatible replacement part number (or VAG number) was installed, VCDS can be used to code the replacement unit.

I've already fitted the unit and the vag number is showing as ending af so by the sound of it the unit I bought is an af unit in a bp case.

Modules in modern cars have two part numbers, the hardware number and the software number. The number on the case may be the hardware number, while a scan tool will show the software number, or both.

BTW, what tool are you using when "the vag number is showing as ending af" ?
