Cylinder head was replaced by 2nd hand completely overhauled cylinder head. Previous head was cracked, camshaft worn, hydraulic lifters worn, cam followers worn. Starter has been replaced (slowish cranking speed). Diesel filter been replaced. Vacuum/fuel pump replaced.
Hot starting is difficult. After cranking 1st time, switch off and start again almost perfect.
Cold start is 100% even when left over night.

Sounds like timing or ground strap or bad ignition switch.

Be sure to verify iat & ect for plausible values.

Might be a firmware update available.

Timing should influence cold start also? We double checked the timing.
IAT and engine temperatures from cold start to hot and on test drive within specs.
Earth straps and positive starps has been checked, but it should influence cold start also.
Ignition sw engages the starter every time without fail.

voltage drops intensify with heat. i second software update. what was the behavior before the repairs.

Voltage drop with electronic battery tester OK.
With the head in that state, loss of power, harsh jerking on acceleration, uneven idling, engine noisy. Client states starting hot & cold was good but it is very difficult for me to believe.
Cam was worn badly, hydraulic lifters worn/cracked, cam followers worn & head cracked in places around combustion area.
I will organise software update at VW.
The old starter rpm would start at +- 175rpm and would go up. New starter immediately starts at 345rpm.

Pro Diag battery analiser and electrical tester. Can test batteries, current draw from starter, earth test and shows charging rate of alternator.
