Look's like I have got similar situation like this T5 http://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?7619-Transporter-T5-strange-communication-issues
Only I have Touareg. Mainly everything directly on K-line talks to diagnostics, everything on CAN - not. Can gateway is part of Instrument panel. Is there the same as for T5, that CAN to diagnostic socket as by WD is not active? Do Instruments have separate fuse for CAN Gateway part? Panel is illuminated with ignition on, several warning lights (ABS, battery, seatbelts, etc) came on and off as they should do. Any ideas?

Comfort CAN is the "bad guy". Next step will be very long - to follow all wires and disconnect all modules on Comfort CAN. Maybe someone knows typical places or modules where things go wrong on Touareg's Comfort CAN?

Thanks, Jack!
Fuses are ok. Something on comfort CAN shuts it down completely. Shorted wires, water damages inside some module etc. I have seen by myself on another Touaregs corroded wire connections on comfort CAN inside plastic tunnels on floor. But then it was open circuit and just some modules behind middle pillars lost comm's.
I don't like Mercedes, but they have got one nice thing - CAN termination points. There it is possible to disconnect and connect several CAN lines just by unplugging and plugging back connectors.

Do anyone know, are physical layouts/drawings of wiring looms available in any VAG service manual? Like a lot of Japanese car's service manuals have those included. I haven't seen any for VAG's except some really ancient Audi. Could be useful at least to locate CAN connection points to separate different lines going in different directions.
Now I have more than half modules disconnected from Comfort CAN, still the same, CAN is blocked, 11,5V on CAN-Low and 0,3V on CAN-High, if measured against chassis ground :(

I'm about to pull the van back in to get back to business on it. When you say you disconnected all the CANs, did you mean that you unplugged the outgoing CAN wires from the back of the cluster?

Yes, first of all I disconnected complete plug with all CAN's. Later I disconnected only suspected CAN lines by removing pins from connector shell.
Overall update for now - I have discovered 4 modules making battery voltage on CAN-low wire. Probably CAN gateway inside cluster is damaged too, it works different each time I switch on ignition. Waiting for replacement cluster now.

I just tried that on the T5. Disconnected the green cluster plug. Still no comms with cluster or anything besides 01 and 46.

Bypass/disconnect all K line wiring and make one straight wire from diagnostic socket pin 7 to cluster's blue connector pin 25. Ignition on and try to connect to addresses 17 and 19.

OK, I'll try this right now. Do I leave the green connector unplugged?

Alright, ran an isolated wire from pin 7 at DLC to pin 25 k line on cluster blue plug and tested it for continuity to make sure my connection was good. Tried to connect to 17 and 19 with green unplugged - no access. Tried it with green plugged in - no access.

Bad cluster?

If all original K-line wires were disconnected, then probably yes, cluster's K-line interface is out of order. Is cluster alive by itself? All warning lamps etc lit up with ignition on? Tried Test command in VCDS Options menu?

Yeah cluster has always worked fine. Test command shows same thing k1-ok k2-ok CAN-not ready

EDIT: I have some different clusters I could use for testing purposes. A mk4 golf and 2002 a4. Will it do anything permanent to the immobilizer if I plug one in to see if I can connect to it?

EDIT 2: Perhaps if I disconnect the ECM it should prevent any permanent faults?

Jack, if he connects only 15, 30, 31 and K according WD, nothing wrong can happen.
