'04 A8L 4.2L throttle tip-in issue

The new MAF sensor seems to have fixed the issue regarding DTC 17743. It happened twice more (on the same grade near our home) before installing the new part; it has not recurred since.

Regarding the tip-in issue, that remains unchanged. However, a momentary lean code developed on bank 1. I discovered that the intake manifold bolts were not very tight. In fact I was able to remove one of them on the bank 1 side with my fingers. It passed the smoke test earlier so I failed to take a closer look.

So I'm in the middle of replacing those gaskets as well as the valley pan gasket which is beginning to weep oil. I'm replacing the front O2 sensors too as long as I'm there, and all indications are that they are the originals.

Furthermore, the crankcase vent valve had a failed diaphragm, allowing constant venting to/from atmosphere. I don't know if that was a factor; certainly it wasn't helping.

This is why a smoke test is bad and I do not use..........and it never beats the pressurized garbage bag test to create an atmosphere of magical chemicals or mighty vac

Hi, I'm back.

The repairs that I made, while necessary, did not fix the hesitation issue.

I tried puffing propane around the areas of possible vacuum leaks on bank 1 with no indication that the O2 sensor smelled anything.

My wife reports that the first time the MIL illuminated, she was puttering around town at low speed/throttle. The second time she was stationary idling in Drive. No driveability symptoms were noticed when the MIL came on.

The long term fuel trim readings are also quite different for banks 1 and 2. Bank 1 is -0.4% and 13.3% (additive and multiplicative, respectively). Bank 2 is 3.2% and 3.1%.

Is it possible that an injector on that bank is lazy or partially clogged, causing fuel to be added? I wondered if VCDS could be used to perform a cylinder balance test, but no lack of smoothness is ever noted so perhaps such a test would not reveal anything.

To recap, I have replaced the MAF sensor (it fixed the 17743 issue), IM gaskets, front O2 sensors, crankcase vent valve and the spark plugs.

Hi Jack, no, that is not likely as I replaced the O2 sensors after I installed the new MAF sensor.

The old O2 sensor probes are identical in appearance, being light gray in color at the tip and black closer to the threaded portion. Also, the old spark plugs are uniform in appearance.

An observation: The tailpipes have a bit of black soot on them which returns after I wipe it off. The engine uses no oil so it has must be due to incomplete combustion.

Fuel psi could be also lacking but usually would be across banks.

Have you verified booster circuit for a possible leak internally?

yes they can fine tune the fuel trim. can u please check cam phasers on both banks. u can usally find them group 90somethings. check them cold and hot. and also what jack said about brake booster.

The rear OXS sensors not only play a role in CAT monitoring, they are superior for trim control after being scrubbed by the CAT.

This is why tuners who delete the function of these OXS sensors after the CAT's........... are nothing but lazy!

Could an incorrect cam position on bank 2 be causing the hesitation symptom and/or could it be related to the lean condition on the opposite bank? ...or am I looking at two separate issues? I expect that the bank 1/bank 2 problems are unrelated, but then again I'm rarely accused of being an Einstein.

It might be related and it might not.

Cam duration/lift/timing, do effect vacuum in the intake, and could very well upset the mixture if not in sync.

The cam sprockets were indeed out of alignment. They were tight to the shafts so I don't think they slipped. According to receipts, the timing service was done by an independent repair facility; perhaps they did not use alignment tools.

Measurements are much better but not exact... I don't know what went wrong there, as I used the alignment bar and the crankshaft lock:

However, the tip-in hesitation/lurch issue remains in all it's glory... no improvement is evident.

I noticed that the ignition timing bounces around quite a bit at idle, with an approximate range of 6 to 17 degrees BTDC. Is that a concern or is it normal?
