CECM Byte 18 help - 2014 Jetta GLI with factory LED-Taillights

Hi, this is my frist post in the formus so please let me know if I need to correct something. I'll make this specific and post my presentation in the right forum as soon as possible.

Here in my country we get mostly US-spec VW's with a mix of parts. For example refering to the Jetta GLI we got different configurations each year (and no upgrade options):

2012 - Halogen front - NAR Halogen rear (no fog, red blinker)
2013 - Halogen front - RdW Halogen rear (fog and amber blinker)
2014+ - Halogen front - RdW LED rear (w/fog, but red blinker)

All cars came configured with Byte 18 for US market, so the cars have no ONE SIDE PARKING LIGHTS. I've been changing byte 18 in the Halogen rear cars for some time to get this function, but knowing which configuration to go back to if there's any trouble.

So the question would be, do you know the setting for a Jetta GLI 2014, with LED taillights and halogen front lights, both NAR and RdW? Any help would be appreciated.

I would be extremely cautious testing different settings for byte 18. My car is at the dealer as I write this so that they can HOPEFULLY reflash to OEM settings via the VW system. I entered in one of many, many codes I'd been trying so that the US spec LED tails I just put on my GLI would not give bulb errors. Once I changed codes the DRLs stopped working no matter what setting I used, then it got worse and worse even when I tried to reset back to original coding. The last one I tried caused every light, including headlights, to flicker like crazy and I could no longer access module 9 through VCDS

Waiting for some help via my post on the retrofit forum..... uuuuuuuuuuuuugh!

Thanks, I've heard about some cases like yours. I'm not going to try different settings of course, just wondering if someone had the correct code for my case.

I've been able to retrofit US OEM Tail lights to three 2012 Jetta GLI with halogen headlights (my car and two friend's cars) using code 53, but that required wiring the headlights in a different way from OEM (the light bar changes brightness when you brake).

But this car already has LED taillights with a different configuration (brake light and turn light in the LED center piece, led bar at full brightness all the time) so I have no info to try for this case.

Folks, I'm in Canada and I did the same thing as you guys did with this byte 18. I went to the VW dealer last week without getting the OEM code back. Even if they went online with VW Canada they were not capable of getting my original setting back for that byte 18. I decided to explore a bit more and here is what I found. For the Halogen Canadian GLI (with led tail), byte 18 at 3E works very good and for the Xenon Canadian GLI, the byte 18 at 3D works also great. I have no code at all (bulbs out, position, brake or tail lights that are not running) but the funny thing about these 2 codes, the brake lights are not the signal "C" shape bright red lights or if you want the turn signal lights that are illuminating but tail lamps which are on the car and not in the lid that are coming brighter when brakes are applied. It works and it's entirely legal but not the same as how the car came out from VW. I also noticed that when the brakes were applied, the rear position lamps on each side were also coming on. Not that bugs me but those position lights should only come on when the lights are on.

If the CECM is still accessible via the dealer VAS diagnostics equipment then simply just reflashing the software (even if reflashing with the same version already loaded) will wipe everything in that module and put everything back to OEM factory settings. This would lose any custom coding you have done to the CECM but those can always just be recoded again afterwards with the exception of Byte 18 of course.

I worked with the VW tech last week and the only thing he told me was that the coding from VW Canada for the CECM was back in the module. Byte 18 was back to 00 but nothing was actually working as the original settings. I did not even have my DRL working when the Tech decided that he had enough of playing with my car. So since I had all the OEM coding in my VagCom, back home, I went back in the CECM and did all the program myself. Then suddenly everything worked at the exception of the byte 18. Where I needed to tweek it a bit. Feel free to help. If you want me to send you whatever info on the car I can do it via a PM. I have been told that these modules were programmed back in Mexico where the car is being put together!

Does anyone knows if the list for byte 18 (byte18.pdf) is up to date? Maybe that list works good for CECM prior 2011 and would need some updates.
I have been trying from that list all the 2 digits code related to VWXXX Halogen & Xenon NAR and none seems to be THE one that perfectly match.

Hey Guyslast week for 2 days i dealt with this issue on a 2014 GLI 30 edition with nav and xenon light and tail led's

i was able to get it to work right by changing 00 to 3f on the long coding... and then switched it back to 00... turned the car off and then on and no issues so far
