Hi,
I have another car that is driving me quietly mad!
2001 A3 (8P) UK model, with a battery drain of around 280mA.
The conditions to set the problem are an ignition on/off cycle. When the battery is freshly connected, no problem with around a 22mA drain. Cycle the ignition on and off and the drain increases to around 280mA and stays there whether its locked or not. if the battery is disconnected the fault goes away until the key is cycled again.
Removing fuse 15 in the passenger compartment fusebox drops the drain to around 8mA. That fuse is marked instrument cluster and autobox (this car is a manual).
I thought it might be the alarm horn H12, TPS (the VAG parts supply in UK) said the horn is in the windscreen scuttle but it isn't. Looking behind the sub-woofer in the boot I can't see one but there is a 3-pin connector there that is unused although the cable appears a little short.
There appear to be several references on the internet about a similar drain on fuse 15 but no definitive answers.

Hi,

This VIN decrypts to the older (Mk4 Golf based A3 that sadly never made it here) 8L chassis:

Vehicle Identification No. WAUZZZ8L92A040216
Model Audi A3 1,8
A3
Date of production 12.11.2001
Year 2002
Sales type 8L1CD4
Engine Code APG
Transmission Code EGV

Not a big deal if that was an error, however if the scan is from another car please let us know so we don't give you mislead you!

Fuse S15 powers a A50 splice labeled "Positive connection (30as), in dash panel wiring harness" before heading towards the cluster and powering T32/23 (blue 32 pin connector at the cluster, terminal 23). Because the cluster is also the CAN gateway in this car type - it is entirely possible the cluster is to blame for the key cycle behavior but I'm troubled by the A50 splice and anything it powers.

Searching A50 in all diagrams for this car directed me to G85's power in the Electronic stability program From model year 2000 diagram. It makes an appearance in several Auto trans diagrams as well but that isn't installed so we can scratch it off of the suspect list.

I suppose I'd unplug the G85 sensor to see if the draw is still present. If that doesn't resolve it you can unplug the cluster but tread lightly if that fixes it. Something else may be keeping the cluster awake and those are difficult to diagnose if you don't have spare parts to plug in and re-test with.

Alternator regulator D+ back feed to cluster area faulty or loose ground under battery box?

Faulty open zone in door jam wiring broken at chafe point causing car no sleep mode?

P.S. Ouch, A50 also makes an appearance in the Central locking system with interior lights switch-off delay and anti-theft alarm system with interior monitoring From model year 2002 diagram where it powers J347 - Ultra-sonic sensor control unit. You might want to unplug 45 and if 35 is one of those old vac pumps in a rear quarter panel that fills with water it might not hurt to get it offline at some point as well since it has so many DTCs.

How the hell did I manage that! Yes it’s an 8L I either typo’d or it was because I was reading an 8P thread just before. I’m at home now but thanks for the info, I’ll check in the morning.

No worries. I tweaked the subject line to 8L but left the contents of post #1 alone.

I was fixated on the fuse in question but Jack's Alternator, Grounds and Fuse panel under the hood suggestions are worth ruling out before you go digging and unplugging 17, 45, 35, etc. Essentially anything connected to the cluster could be causing it to draw and that includes the Alternator.
