just to share my experience with you. Some might benefit from it. On Christmas eve our VW E-UP! from 2014 did not want to drive anymore. Upon starting the error Electrical system failure: Stop! was shown on the display accompanied with 3 chimes. Towed the car home and used VCSD to scan for errors. This was the output:
I cleared the DTC's but the problem did not go away and charging was not possible either.
Not being very experienced with electric cars, the 400 VDC power system etc made me read a lot about it during the holidays. I read on various VW forums that this problem also occured on the e-Golf. Charging the 12V battery that was quite drained did not help. Nothing helped. In the end we got the car transported to a VW garage. After 3 days more waiting they did a diagnosis and came to the conclusion that the PTC Heater was the root cause of the problem. When I checked the initial scan indeed it shows under module 08 - Auto HVAC:
Control Module for High-Voltage PTC Heater; Internal Shut-Off Condition
Moreover it had: Fault Priority: 1
That should have been the giveaway but because I was not known to VW troubleshooting before I overlooked this initially. I would never have expected that an electric heater fault could stop the whole car.
VW wanted 2000 USD for replacing the part.
We took the E-UP back home on a trailer and I ordered the PTC heater from a wrecking yard for 250 USD.
Learned along the way that most electric cars have a PTC heater that rapidly supplies the interior with hot air if outside temperatures fall below a certain value.
Anyways replaced the heater last night. Learned myself first how to disable the High Voltage
Unfortunately the error was still there! I then expected that the new (used) heater needed coding with VCDS. I read for hours to find the security access code for 08 - HVAC but did not find it.
I went back to the car to find that the error condition was gone
Apparantly the process takes some time? Do the other ECU's update themselves by learning that the fault condition no longer exist? This is something I like to know. Does someone know the answer?
In any case happy that the car is on the road again.
