Hi All,
This is my first post to this sight but I have been "lurking/using" the information on the sight for years.

Anyways, I have a 2001 Beetle Sport with a 1.8T (AWV) and have been having an intermittent issue with a short term, sudden loss of power while driving.

I have had a GIAC chip in the car since 2003, and got a P0420 code about 5 months ago. I put a spacer on sensor 2 and the code went away but I am currently waiting for a new Downpipe with Cat to come this week.

The car still drives great with good power. I have just had this issue, and about 3 weeks ago the car stalled completely while I was driving from work to home. After a few minutes, I was able to start the car again and drive home. Since then, the car will occasionally lose power for a moment and the EPC and CEL lights come on for a second and then go out. After which the car drives fine.

I am at a bit of an impasse as where to start with this issue I have got into the engine bay and wiggled almost all of the wires at the connectors to see if there was any obvious problem, but have not been able to recreate the issue.

I will be working on the car this weekend and would appreciate any advise or guidance on the best approach to track this down.

Thanks,
Gary

Hello and welcome OP to the VCDS forum

Sounds like a tad of induced FOD.......with a twist of bad oxygen sensor heater as a result when fiddle fucking with a stupid spacer, could be brake light switch or MAF issue too since E-MOD.

Install two new oxygen sensors with new CAT and down-pipe and correct all FOD non comporting AECD's, all should than be fine.

Will do...the spacer was a "necessary" evil to get through emissions--I was somewhat dubious about it and I make no other excuses except funds were tight at the time:-)
I'll report back after I make the changes next week.

Gracias

AECD circumvention or rationalization is unneeded, most states have an exemption for the poor and thank you for being honest!

You better at least query WD & fuse the OXS heaters for both OXS sensors & before you burn your ECU to the ground, further you would risk the loss of your GIAC chip being damaged? :banghead:

Don't cheap out on O2 sensors. IMHO, only buy them from a business that sells brand new VWs up front. Oh the phone calls we get at Ross-Tech about "Bosch O2 sensors" that have been installed. :banghead:

I have the Bentley Manual--I have read that the heater circuits draw about 2A. Would you suggest a 2.5A fuses in the heater circuits?
BTW, new-original VW Sensors ordered...

They draw less than that, so I would go lower to protect the board, increase as needed, verify draw with meter to see for each.........

If you need an ECU please let me know.......

Well, I made it through the holidays...Just an update.
Installed the new cat with 2 genuine VW O2 sensors. No issues since the change. I keep waiting for something to happen, but so far so good.
Thanks for the help.
