It shifts beautifully until operating temperature is achieved, then it flares on the 3-4, normal acceleration. If I let up on the throttle when it is about to shift it is fine. If I lean on the throttle on this upshift it is fine as well. If I lock it in '3', then put it in 'D' when the time seems right, it shifts well.

I changed the fluid and filter a few thousand miles ago and found nothing bad in the pan. The fluid change did not help.

Is this likely an internal issue such as something sticking in the valve body?

Mike

Hello,

Is this likely an internal issue such as something sticking in the valve body?

- Could be? It is hard to say.... Given the age of the [01F] transmission, I guess it could be anything, seals, clutches (never had one open)???
Also I do not see any factory repair manuals for internal testing/repairs of these transmissions, so this maybe a difficult one to diagnoses.

I changed the fluid and filter a few thousand miles ago and found nothing bad in the pan. The fluid change did not help.

- Did you follow the repair manual exactly when filling the transmission and did you use the correct fluid for the vehicle? [VW# G 052 162]
Using the correct fluid and filling at the correct temperature can make a big difference. Even if the transmission has a [02] or [03] dipstick, see manual for details.

Here is a link to the Ross-Tech wiki pages where you can source the correct 'factory' information for this and other vehicles.

What about swapping to a manual transmission? :D

Just a thought, hope it works out for you,

Hello DrPeter and thanks for your thoughts.

I used Amsoil Multi-vehicle ATF which meets the G 052 162 requirements. Also, I used the correct dipstick tool and filled per the procedure described in The Bentley via VCDS.

It's an old car; the issue is not worsening and the work-around is easy so I'll probably just continue driving it as is.

Regards... Mike
