Fuel-powered cars and trucks catch fire every damn day. There are approximately 150,000 car fires per year in the US. They don't make the news because, well, everyone knows that a tank full of gasoline or diesel fuel is flammable as all hell.
Yes, li-ion batteries can burn due to an accident, but they are considerably less volatile than a tank full of fuel.
