Hi,

I am a new user and the recipient of a 2014 VW Passat TSI SEL given to me by my SIL. I love this car. One of the nicest I have owned. The car went into limp mode on a hundred mile trip to visit family. I limped it back home. The car first showed the glow plug warning light and kicked me out of cruise control. On the way back home in limp mode the Adblue warning came on with the mileage limitation. In the following week I followed a reset process from this site and cleared the codes. I verified there were no codes. I ran about 30 miles and the errors returned. A copy of the VCDS report is below. I have filled the Adblue tank and it was not empty in the first place. From other posts it seems as though I am in for a Adblue heater assembly which seems to include to level detection. I may also need the pump. The adblue tank repair is covered in this forum and on YouTube. It seems simple enough. I am an operating engineer, maintenance manager and truck driver. I'd like not to go to the dealer because the only numbers they seem to know are in increments of $1K. That said, I'd like not to be forever getting back on the road. I love my Buick century 2002 3.1 simply because it just always seems to start. At 35 mpg it rivals the Passat in fuel economy and kills it in reliability. I've made two round trips of 1200 miles to take care of family issues in the Century because there was an issue with the Passat each time. Its a crying shame when your beater car is more reliable than the high tech VW. I now ride around with my laptop and VCDS cable in the car. Any help the group might offer would be appreciated.

I d think he should see if that reductant pressure sensor which gives a electrical malfunction code is the culprit

Hi Folk,


I'm back after letting the Passat sit all winter whilst I pondered my next move. Too old and too cold to work on the ground in the winter. I finally decided to drop the DEF tank assembly when a few warm days came along simply to see what I could see.

I read all of the posts and sad stories from this forum and other sources. The DEF tank assembly is basically three bolts and three wiring connectors and a fuel line. I took my time and exercised to oft missing patience. The VW connectors use a special tool to separate but a small flat head screw driver (instrument tech size) works well. I was able to removed it and remount it without removing the rear body skirt. Since the tank was full, I used my floor jack as a platform to wiggle it out and lower it down. 2.5 gallons is only around 20 pounds but it's a tough balancing act trying to remove the three bolts while holding it in the air. FYI I backed the car onto standard car ramps for this repair.

After removal I cleaned the top of the tank and removed the pump from the tank assembly. The picture below is the top of the heater assembly where the AdBlue pump is mounted.


You can see from the picture that the rubber grommet is covered in DEF crystals. DEF is a salt. So, when the water vaporizes it leaves behind the urea salt portion. This is a problem in that it indicates a leak when there should not have been one. I'm guessing the is the suction side of the AdBlue pump. In as much as the new pump directions tell you how to prime the pump, I'm assuming a small leak will cause it to lose suction. I was not sure this was the cause but I ordered and new pump and heater from Rock Auto. Following their arrival, I got another couple of warm days and remounted everything. I took a lot of time to review the assembly videos on YouTube. Too many stories of broken this and broken that and ordering another new pump.

I put a gallon of AdBlue in and then went to work with the laptop. Old codes still there and some new codes. I was at a loss as how to decipher it all. Hate to admit my mind was a lot sharper 20 years ago and that I had more of a dogged desire to figure stuff out, but it is so. Now I like to throw stuff that doesn't work in the trash.

Fast forward a month, I loaded the bicycle in the trunk and was getting ready to take the car to the shop and ride the bike home. I looked underneath and saw I had taken the wiring connectors back apart and the DEF liquid line. I jumped under there and hooked it all back up. I tested each connection and had one that would not lock. I pulled it apart several times and finally got it to lock. Then I began to wonder. I got my laptop and hooked up the diagnostic connection. I went back through the AdBlue reset procedure posted on this site. Everything cleared. Voila! Took it on the test drive on the interstate and through town making sure to get in a couple of 80mph power runs. Only got a low tire warning. Everything had cleared. 95 miles to shutdown disappeared. No AdBlue warning lamp. If I get any further warning or issues I'll post back.

Summary

Looks like the rubber bushing seal may have caused a loss of suction in the AdBlue pump which may have failed electrically resulting in the reference voltage error. I didn't check further with a meter because it appears to be resolved and time is precious right now.
Cost was about $450. I did not buy the most expensive parts but went middle of the road.

Back again in May of 2024. Ultimately the Reference B voltage error returned after about 125 miles of driving and the car sat through the winter as we had family issues to work through. I began seeing if I could identify where in the multitude of sensors that I was losing signal. I rightly beleived that is was a failed sensor that was causing the open. Ultimately I found out that the vehicle was still covered under the diesel gate warranty and took it to a local Dayton, Ohio VW delaership last week. It would be nice if there was a simple list of the the sensors on each Reference voltage circuit, A B and C. But alas, I have not found one in my research. The dealer tech found the boost charge sensor located on the intercooler to be at fault. It was replaced underwarranty.

I would note that I had replaced a leaking oil filter housing with an aftermarket metal housing to prevent that well known failure from occuring again. When I did that repair the intercooler was coated with an oily sludge I presumed was from oil migrating past the turbo bearings and seals. I cleaned this up with gasoline and ether (starting fluid). I may have damaged the sensor by some means while working on it. That said, the sensor never showed up in the scan readout. I'm not sure from an engineering method why the control system is set up in a way that does not trap the actual fault but leaves the tech to find out where the signal is lost at. I'm sure VW shop techs have scripts to help them run down these problems but as a degreed engineer who has worked on some industrial control systems it would seem to be most helpful to have the fault codes trap back to the failed component rather than cascade faults throughout the systems and leave the user looking eveywhere but where the problem actually is. In the project design world we would refer to this as gold plating a garden hoe or rube goldberging the system with a lot of unecessary horse hockey. Great vehicle and I still love it but have to shake my head in disbelief at the craziness. Even the serivce tech admitted that these cars have challenges. Now it's back to other important stuff and hopefully summer time sailing or woodworking.
