Looking for some help or insight into a new issue. Two days ago, while driving, my '12 A7 the car would flash an "ACC cruise control / ABS standby" error on the dash while simultaneously taking the car out of gear (no gear indicator on console or on dash cluster); and as such the car wouldn't move. I scanned the car and it returned error code P0705 Transmission Range Sensor. I took the car to an independent shop and they informed me today that although the sensor is testing as failed Audi won't sell them a new part.

My question to the group is:

1) Can I potentially swap a Transmission Range Sensor from an identical year A7 onto my car? And if so will any coding or adaptations be needed? Since this wouldn't be a "fresh part" I'm assuming I wouldn't have much if anything to code in this case, however, if so does anyone have any insight.

2) This sensor also connects to the cars mechatronics unit. The shop didn't give me any indication that this unit is bad, only that the sensor is. Is it required to replace the entire unit as well as the sensor or will a sensor swap work?

Right now this failure happened 400 miles from home. My first priority is getting the car back home and from there if I need to do any further or more permanent fixes that's fine but what I'm looking for right now is to get this car home.

Any insight into this issue or fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply, I did a scan of the vehicle prior to dropping it off at the shop and did manage to take this picture of the error from VCDS. I will attempt to get another scan of the vehicle as soon as I can.

I don't know what's involved in that. That transmission is a conventional automatic, a ZF 8HP:

Good afternoon. Thank you for the video, that's actually very insightful.

From what I understand, the error that VCDS picked up from the car occurs when the TCM receives an input error from the Transmission Range Sensor itself; the sensor being what detects the the gear shift position. The TRS is connected to the mechatronics unit.

While I was trying to diagnose the car and while it was drivable the car would actually shift gears, this is leading me to guess that the mechatronics unit's valves & solenoids themselves are actually functioning but the problem is coming from some erroneous signal input from the TRS.

My guess is that either the TRS itself somehow went belly up or, after watching the video you provided, that perhaps a leak in the sealing sleeve has caused an electrical contact issue which is causing the problem.

When the shop I took the car to spoke to Audi they basically told the tech that their SOP is to replace the entire mechatronics unit, including the TRS, however, I do know that the TRS can be removed from the rest of the entire assembly.

My hope here is that I can get the trans pan dropped, inspect the electrical connections and seals for any leaks or contact issue, clean if needed and then swap the TRS for one out of an identical model vehicle. Audi stated that their repair operation would require coding and adaptation, which I understand with a new part, however, a unit from a functioning car might just do the trick. What I plan to do is connect VCDS and record all of the existing code parameters for module 02 and after the swap scan the module and if there are any changes adjust as needed to get the correct functionality.

I haven't seen anything on this sort of repair either so if this works I'll be sure to post a thread here on the forums of what went on to hopefully help others in the future.

If they replace the whole mech, it certainly would. CP as well. But if the range sensor can be swapped, then I would guess that wouldn't be needed.

I've never dug into a ZF8, so I really don't know if swapping the range sensor is feasible. On old 4-speed VW transmissions, it certainly was; our 2001 Eurovan has had it that sensor replace twice, but then it has a totally separate TCU, not an integral "mechatronic".

Hmm .. seems this is new territory then. Looking at what I've seen from TRS units that have been removed from the mechatronics unit it doesn't appear to be overly involved electronically. It looks to be a physical position sensor that simply sends a signal to them more complicated unit.

100%, if I have to replace the entire mechatronics unit I'd absolutely have to adapt it, and if it comes to that I'll do my best ... but, in this case, it looks like, on the surface, that this should work in theory.
