Hi guys - has anybody retrofitted a climate windscreen to a MK7 golf? (Basically a heated windscreen) I would like to understand wiring and any associated controllers (plus coding of course). No Autoscan yet, will post later.

I am looking into it as I have to replace the windscreen anyway to retrofit the Lane Assist camera.

the wiring is basic, one wire from the BCM goes to the engine fusebox to trigger a relay that will power the windscreen. there will be no actual button for the feature, you activate it through the radio on the Climatronic menu.

coding should be easy as well, I think the Long Coding talks about the option for both 08 and 09 modules.

I have one from the factory on my MQB tiguan. If your golf has a MIB 2.5 and a adaptations only/zero coding BCM i suspect it will be quite similar regarding coding/adaptations.

JS3: hi To add to the advice that has already been given- it doesn't look like rocket science from a WD perspective (see below), albeit I haven't done the retrofit personally.

As you can see - besides the wiring loom, you will also need to install a relay to control the comparatively large electrical current (the BCM can't do this directly). I reckon the first task in the project (before you spend bucks buying the various bits-and-pieces) is to check whether your current BCM has Pin #26, Socket A physically populated. This is a pretty-good indicator that your BCM can accommodate a heated windscreen function. Of course, if this pin is missing the task becomes more complex (including the dreaded job of clearing Component Protection errors)

Interesting to see this pop up just as I'm looking at going through the firewall for the "last" time. My goal is to lay in wiring for anything I may want to retrofit later.

Anyway... found two part numbers for heated Golf glass with "facelift" style Driver Assist, so 3Q0 camera.

This one that is available in the states and elsewhere, seems to be an e-Golf part number, and parts.vw.com describes it as a rear windshield, haha.

Again, don't know how long this link will be alive but the glass is pictured, you can see a connector at the bottom left of the pic (lower right of the windshield).


The wire routing is pretty straight forward, as is the coding. Now working on the part number for connectors and relay (not expecting trouble) and the relay "holder" section of the engine fuse box.
I'm not positive but I think this section of my fuse box is empty so I need the insert... and the repair wires (or terminals) for the wiring at the relay.

My phone does something strange when I try to edit... but confirmed nothing in the second "row" (from the left) of my engine fuse box.
Perusing some Erwin drawings and some other diagrams for a 2019 Golf R one can get the nearly whole picture of what is required.

So I guess we can start with the electrical, which was partially pictured above but sort of needs more...

• J47 is the Windshield Defogger Relay, which will need to be installed (position R11 engine fuse box), PN (Watch This Space )
  • Terminal 121 is 0.5mm (20 AWG) wire, tied to the output of Fuse SB17
    • This is a 7.5A fuse and will exist in your car, feeds several other things
    • It will not be replaced, as it just provides power to the relay J47 relay coil
  • Terminal 122 is 0.5mm (20 AWG) wire, goes into the cabin, BCM Plug B Pin 26
    • This is a ground for the relay coil, provided by the BCM (control via Infotainment screen)
    • Note the diagram in prior post shows BCM Plug A which is incorrect, BCM Plug B has 46 pins (Plug A and C have 73)
    • This is where your long coding will come in pre-facelift, or adaptation on facelift BCM
  • Terminal 123 is a 4mm (12 AWG) wire that is fed by Fuse SB14
    • SB 14 is a 40A fuse, which your car will not have so wiring needs to be added for the line and load side
      • This is "low profile maxi" type, although I suspect that's not the official name it'll get you what you want, haha.
      • Line side of this comes straight off the battery bus bar tied to (large, threaded) terminal 508 at the front of the box
      • Load side is a 4mm (12 AWG) wire which jumps right over Terminal 123 of the J47 - Windshield Defogger Relay
  • Terminal 125 is a 4mm (12 AWG) wire that is spliced (into two 4mm (12 AWG) wires) that go to connectors left/right windshield base
    • The diagram is sort of weird, and shows Z2 - Windshield Defogger, which I believe is the element of the windshield
    • So this Z2 has a connection on the left and right side (base) of the windshield
    • The schematic calls them A1 and B1 though it doesn't say which side is right/left (and it doesn't matter)
    • Not shown in my diagram for the Golf R but Tiguan drawing shows these, 1 wire connectors, both PN 071973851
    • Diagram shows "C1" which I suspect as the front windshield chassis ground

Now for the fuse panel, in my car there nothing in this second row, so an insert is required...

• This will be position R11 of the engine fuse box (Fuse Panel B for you purists).
• There are two inserts that can go in this spot, shown as item 6 and 9 of the picture.
• You want item 9, PN 5Q0937507B which has a space for R11 (that we need)
  • Keen eyes may note that item 9 is for PR Code 4GW which is... heated insulating windshield!
  • This PR Code is shown in one place on the Golf drawing, but is all over the Tiguan drawings
• You may find you already have this insert there, with position R8 used... circle gets the square!
  • Note, I am only talking Golfs here, Tiguan is a little different with the fuse layout.

Hopefully someone with more patience (and resources) than I will find the repair wire part numbers for these relays. In a shamefully delayed moment of insight I picked up a spare fuse panel.
All that means is I have plenty of wires with the the terminal types needed for fuses. Some repair wires can be $30-40 alone. I paid under $50 shipped for the spare fuse panel.

What did you get in the mail or bring home for your MKVII today?

I'm retrofitting windsreen heating to my Golf 7.
Windscreen with Kufatec wiring loom installed, some coding done but not able to get it working.

screen/radio is changed to aftermarket. (Zenec Z-E1010)
It shows HVAC screen when selecting "MENU" but windscreen heating activation isn´t possible.

Are you sure the aftermarket radio has that function? Try with your original radio if it allows to turn the heating on.

If you push the physical MAX defogging button (windshield icon with max below it) the blower goes on max and the electrical windshield heating turns on. If the electrical windshield heating works, you’ll be able to see that in measuring values of the BCM, and if it doesn’t, the BCM will probably throw a code. The windshield doesn’t get warm to the touch, so thats not a reliable indicator.

If the electrical windshield heating works with the above method, I’d say your issue is the aftermarket infotainment unit, since the button to turn on the electrical windshield heating manually is in de climate menu that displays on the infotainment screen. The setup sub-menu of the climate screen also contains a setting that turn automatic electrical windshield heating on and off.

The electrical heated windshield isnt a very common factory option, so I’m pretty sure it might very well be unsupported by your infotainment unit.

Edit: Heated windshield button is added in V3.6 according to these release notes.
