So why would the changes made make the gateway "think" any different to what it has always reported thus far? For that matter, what is the "gateway" when it come to CAN? Where does it reside?
As background I am a bit of a systems type person. Electrionics / process/ networking but I confess I'm a virgin on CAN but willing to learn.

The gateway is like a router on a LAN. It connects and routes traffic between the various network segments inside the car to each other, as well as to the dedicated network segmet that goes to the outside world on your OBD-II connector.
I don't know why your gateway thought your instrument cluster was incommunicado at that particular moment.

mmm well it wasn't just that particular moment. I did a few scans of individual modules and in total 3 auto scans and on each one it reports the same issue. Odd...

I think before I go any further I'm going to put all my coding back to as it was before and see what errors I get. Got to thinking that at the same time my Stop Start fault was fixed by Audi I changed the coding to automatically dip the passenger side mirror when engaging reverse. After these two events I got the message regarding my mobile phone antenna. Coincidence? Now, after adding the trailer module I got a GPS antenna error too. I'm struggling to see a link but stranger things have happened at sea - or so they say. I'm going to put it al back as was including the mirror and see what happens and we can go from there.

Oh and another thing. the instructions that come with Westfalia kits, the Wibutec harness and even the Audi instructions for retrofitting the swivel and removable bars all say that one of the five power wires should be connected to ST4 and they suggest this should be a switch live with ignition on. On my car ST4 is a permanent live as is ST1 where all the others go. Anyone have any inside knowledge or experience of this? I have put it in ST4 F5 for now as per Audi guide but there has to be some mistake here - maybe?

So...after putting all the coding back as was (including auto dipping passenger mirror) and disconnecting the Can connection of the trailer module I did a scan. I then cleared all dtc's and rescanned. The results are below. You'll note that the CAN gateway still has an issue reaching the instruments module yet later reads it fine with no fault code. Never had this before. The faults for the two antennas are still there too but the satnav seems to work perfectly despite the "short to ground" as does the telephone but I covered that right at the start so I wont go over that again. Weird.

Had an epiphany when I woke this morning. The new error is related to GSM antenna which is of course also related to the phone NOT GPS. Got my acronyms mixed up!
So as it is GSM I wonder if it is to do with the hexaganol antennas that are mounted behind the rear bumper on each corner. I believe these are to do with the phone. When I removed the bumper these were both covered in road grime so I hosed them off. They should be able to take a dousing, but you never know. I'll investigate that another time. Still curious as to wht the gateway has started playing up though.
really wish I'd done a scan just before I started so I could be sure it was related to this job and not pre existing. It was certainly not there a few weeks back, but that doesn't mean it didn't occur a few days or even the day before I did the bar. Probably too coincidental though.

Little bit of good news today, I discovered that the issue with the switched live was down to ST4 fuse carrier being split into 2 parts. F1 through F5 are switched ignition lives where F6 through 12 are permanent. You'd never know looking at it briefly during installation. Just unfortunate that I popped my meter lead in an empty fuse slot around F9 position and assumed the rest of ST4 would be the same. Interesting. Your trailer module is coded identically to mine, but as all the other modules look different dependant on what options are there I'd need others to see if there are other differences that are pertinent. The other thing that's of note is you have the same issue with the telephone antenna as I do. Common failure of error in the way vcds detects it I have no idea. I'll leave that for another thread.

So today I took my car to a "Towbar specialist" who have a Westfalia Autocode tool with "The latest update in it"
AFter about 10 minutes the job was complete and they were going to send me on my way before I asked then to test it. Guess what...?
Yes, all the lights worked, but so did the revrsing sensors when they shouldn't and the trailer wasn't displayed on the MMI. They spent half an hour going through the process again and again and concluded there must be something wrong with the car! I explained that I already had all this working with the exception of the brakes as I was not able to code that module using NEtech's instructions due to the secure code not working. They are going to call Westfalia on Monday for advice.
In the mean time I took the car home and did a scan. All they appear to have done is to have added the trailer module and modify the trunk electrical module Byte 4 bit 0. Everything else is the exact same as it was before. No change to Engine, Central convenience Central electrical or brakes.
Clearly this is not a thorough job and I need to get back to them or revert to self coding but to do that I need to be able to do the ABS module and that takes me back to NEtech's suggestion of a Beta version of vcds off UWE to get access.
I would also really appreciate knowing what changing each of the the various modules per NEtech's instructions is meant to do.

OK. Maybe NETech will come good as he came up with the coding changes. He must have got the coding info from somewhere?
I'm pretty sure that when a board is connected the following is meant to happen:
The ESP program is modified to help stop trailer snaking
The reversing lights and fog light on the car are disabled
The rear parking sensors are disabled
The dashboard monitors the board lights for faults
And in the case of the EOM retractable bar, you get indication of the bar not being in the locked position whether that be in use or stored.
Is there any risk of a version of VCDS to allow me access to the ABS module? If I had that I think id just settle for doing it myself and be happy without the release LED working. NETech's guide worked much better then the Westfalia tool - in the hands of that company anyhow... Just the brakes that's all.

He's the King of (certain) retrofits. This is due to the tax structure in Denmark where new cars have some absurd level of taxation, but "replacement parts" don't. Thus it's often advantageous to add features to a car after purchase rather than just ordering it with those features to begin with.

If you mean what the purpose of the codings are, I did not answer before and also not now, about what the functions of each coding change is for.
We can come with different suggestions, what each coding function should mean, but in most cases not know for sure.
You would have to ask Audi engineers, who programmed controllers in your Model, for the correct answers.
I don't find it is crucial to know, to get a towbar installed, what is important, is to make the codings/corrections that are necessary.
I just try to suggest, what is done with the original test system for a original trailer bar retrofit.
Please just wait if you can, until next VCDS update or beta version.
Do you know if there is a short wire, on the connector for towbar controller, if so, what 2 pin numbers is it connected between ?

I guess all I was saying is that if we knew what each change to the coding was meant to do we could tell if the installation and functionality was complete and working as designed. It was only the fact that a few who have tried this have had the same issue with the release lever indication led made me think it may not be everything that Audinwould do. Like I also said, if I can get the abs module sorted I'd consider it good enough and park it there.
It's looking like the only other option would be to ask an Audi garage to code it which would likely be an hour labour. I could ask them to do it during the cars last in warranty service in a few months which may work out cheaper. If they can't get that led working, nobody can! ( maybe)?

By the way there is no link between any two pins on the trailer module. It is as per elsawin drawings.
