Having the ability to know what gear the car is in while in D mode would be great. Euro models do this by default (I believe depending on the transmission). Is there a VCDS mod that does this for Golf 7 models? It can be done on some Audi models so maybe the same can be done for VW's? If anyone knows of one, could you please post it?

There's never been a single, generic way to do this. It's generally transmission-specific (if the instrument cluster supports it!) and some transmissions have that functionality while others don't. At one point, VW removed it from some of the 6-speed DSGs with a firmware update.

Anyway, is there an Auto-Scan from your car somewhere so we can have a look at what may or may not be in the tranny?

Hey Uwe! Thanks for chiming in.

I'll pull an auto-scan from my car and post it here for review.

Here is how to do it on an Audi Q5:

Enable automatic gear selection shown in DIS
[02 – Auto Trans] [Adaptation – 10]
Select “Single Gear Display” from top channel drop down menu
Select “D on/S on” from new value drop down menu

quailallstar: The instrument clusters on Golf mk7s in the "other" hemisphere do have the gear number displayed - on the top RHS (see picture below)

quailallstar: I would be delighted to be proven wrong - but alas I believe that Uwe is correct (again) - My understanding is that this is a firmware matter. I have also read on other US forums that some third party agents have successfully made the gear number appear as part of their aftermarket programming of the gearbox controller (I recall APR being quoted as one of these agents - I think)!

On some Auto transmissions with label files - Change from "North America" to "Rest of World" (RoW) - I'm waiting for the label file for the 2017 Passat to be available. :) This worked on older Passats 2012-2014. The example below was pulled from a different vehicle but the OP in the forum stated it worked on his Jetta etc... This is for non-DSG transmissions only. Label files for 2016+ Passats aren't available yet, but they are basically the same 09G transmissions so I'm assuming this would work for the 2017 as well. Maybe UWE and team knows the long code for this change from older Passats? I don't have an older Passat to verify what the long code change would be.

02 - Auto Trans > 07 - Coding > Software Coding

By Default the value should be VW Tiguan North America
Just change to 0000328 - VW Tiguan (5N) Rest of World (RoW)

Hmmmm I would like to try this on my Golf wagon with the 6-speed auto trans. Will log in and see what the coding looks like tonight.

Going from 348 to 328 on our 2016 NMS didn't work  The transmission looks like it will accept pretty much any coding, so getting the coding accepted isn't a sign of anything.

Thanks for the update Eric,

Hmm when I go into the controller - under coding, I'm not sure what to set. Would you mind providing the long coding for this change? Or how you changed from 348 to 328? Did you just use the Label file from older Passats?

I'm thinking that they have changed something in the byte order for 2014+ models. For example the older Passat's ABS Controller used to only have 19 bytes vs 2016+ with 20 byte long code. In a separate thread we found out that the coding to enable ASR/ESC defeat also changed significantly.

Since the displays still shows the gears you are in while in tiptronic mode, I'd think the controller should be able to do it in "Auto" mode as well.

Well, this is the stock coding:
Code:
Address 02: Auto Trans (J217) Labels: 09G-927-749-V1.clb
   Part No SW: 09G 927 749 AN HW: 09G 927 749 AN
   Component: AISIN AG6 G3 129 2941
   Coding: 000348
   Shop #: WSC 09003 957 00200
   ASAM Dataset: EV_TCMAQ250031 002009
   ROD: EV_TCMAQ250031_002_VW25.rod
   VCID: 05549B7915A557CF759-8050

So in VCDS Long Coding (not the helper), you'd enter 000328 instead of 000348.
FWIW the helper thinks the coding should be 000008.

^^^^ The admap for MY 16 auto trans modules only contain 3 x adaptation channels and the code string is very small (at least the units in my database are this way) - what are you trying to do?

Trying to change any NAR coding to ROW in hopes of the trans showing what gear I'm in while in D.

So looks like in 2017 the coding schema has changed. It no longer looks like they have a short code for it. May need to discover what all the bytes do.

Code:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Address 02: Auto Trans (J217) Labels: None
   Part No SW: 09G 927 158 BD HW: 09G 927 158
   Component: AISIN AG6 G3 202 3121
   Coding: 010200000C000000000000000000000000000000
   Shop #: WSC 09003 957 00200
   ASAM Dataset: EV_TCMAQ250031 002009
   ROD: EV_TCMAQ250031_VW31.rod
   VCID: 76A02A8FC96BB6F2E3-8022

No fault code found.

I think you can still figure it out on the fly. Think of a preposterously high gear number given the vehicle speed, and add one for extra carbon build up :)

FWIW the helper thinks the coding should be 000008.

Since 11/2016 the suggested (standard) value by the coding assist is 000348.

So looks like in 2017 the coding schema has changed. It no longer looks like they have a short code for it. May need to discover what all the bytes do.

Used to be a long coding for quite some time, just the length of the value and the actual table/matrix has changed to a new format. I'll add the details to VCDS, as soon as I come across them.

Sebastian - That would be much appreciated. I had this feature on my old A6 and recently retrofitted the tiptronic steering wheel from the V6 Passat onto my 1.8T Passat so being able to see what gear I'm in would really be nice.

Looking forward to this moving along (fingers crossed!). Anything you need from my vehicle to help you in your research?

So I was playing around since I had a little time to kill. At least on the 2017 Passat changing the following allowed actual gear to display, will be test driving it a bit to see if anything else has changed.

Original:

Nice work! Saw your post over on VWVortex. How does it drive? Might do attempt this on my MK7 Golf too.
