I figured I should make my first post on the ross tech forums a really good one. I have had my cable for years now and It has been one of the best investments I have ever made for my shop. Until now I have managed quite well with it but this Phaeton has me stumped and I really need some help up here.

I found this car on Kijiji in Manitoba and I ended up trading one of my Passat w8s for it because I am oh so broke
It was still a great deal in my eyes however, how often do you come across a Phaeton? Running or not. So I put in some batteries and found the keys did not work and all I could get was Immobil Active on the display. This was the first scan of the kessy module:

these antenna fault codes stayed.
After some google searching I found this :
http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/37055-keyless-kessy-entry-problem-fixed-after-5-dollars-and-1-hour-o/

So I got out my handy dandy soldering iron and proceeded to replace the mosfets and resistors, no luck I still had the antenna faults. The only Phaeton wiring diagrams I can find are for the european/keyless access model that has the antennas but when I looked at the pinout on the connector, those wires were not there. It was at this point I found the box for the kessy module and realized it was brand new. Ok so it has not been coded correctly at the dealer!!!
It was at this point I contacted an ebay seller that does kessy key matching to see if I could get the SKC. He was very helpful and gave me some valuable tips that allowed me to properly code the module and get rid of the antenna faults. Once that was sorted out we were able to see that the kessy was synced to the car and all that needed to be done was program the keys to it.

So I sent away the kessy and keys to be matched and I waited. Buddy wasn't able to match the keys so he gave me the 5 digit pin instead 19798
When I got it back I could not log in with 19798, Then he gave me 65281 and that one did not work either. I have messed with workshop code and importer numbers in my Workshop Identification in VCDS program options and it still locks me out for extended periods with both login codes.

I figured I should make my first post on the ross tech forums a really good one.

If you're the guy with the Youtube channel who does crazy things with VR and W engines, then A) you're completely insane, B) I love it, C) stick around! I own a 2006 Phaeton W12 and I'm a big fan of your work.

It was still a great deal in my eyes however, how often do you come across a Phaeton? Running or not. So I put in some batteries and found the keys did not work and all I could get was Immobil Active on the display. This was the first scan of the kessy module:
Okay so you've had some water ingress in the KESSY area, which is sadly common. Also looks like prior owner tried to fix it with a new KESSY and didn't get all the way there. I'm not super stoked about the Auto-Scan issues with the rest of the car. There may be some other residual damage. What signs of water ingress can you see? Do you have any other background info?

I'm not sure how you managed to end up with keyless-entry coding into a non-keyless KESSY in the first place. Post your VIN so I can check to see how this car was optioned from the factory. If this is the wrong KESSY module for the car, you may not want to invest too much more time into it. I'm also not super stoked about the PIN values your guy is giving you. Aren't they supposed to be 4-digit PINs (entered 5 digits with leading 0) or 7 digit SKCs? Those don't seem valid.

I did just get an email back from Linda Ross saying my info has been added to the customer file. So I guess I am registered?
I have not pulled the carpet up on the passenger side yet but the dealership it was at apparently did. I hope the other modules are ok
What exactly are you referring to with 0x01, 0x02, 0x03, 0x11?

Yes I am the w8/12 guy :) There were no signs of water damage that I could see under the drivers side carpet so I am guessing it was minimal. I am guessing that the auto scan only picked up a few modules because I cannot turn on the ignition. Only some of them wake up when I push the brake pedal, like the seat, immo, and steering wheel

That sets you up for phone/email support, but isn't showing up for you on the forum quite yet. Click here for verify instructions. Short version, if you registered for the forum after you registered for support, you'll probably need to send a PM to Uwe. He'll fix you up.

Jack wants to know why you can't talk to the engine ECU (address 01), transmission control module (address 02), or ABS brake control module (address 03). If this is a W12 you'll also have address 11 for the second ECU, if it's a V8 that won't exist.. Some of that will be dormant due to ignition-off because of your key matching situation, but I think you might be able to wake them up with brake-pedal down for 20+ seconds. It may take a few tries. But, KESSY doesn't see a response from the ECU during Immo matching in your screenshots above, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

Based on what little we can see in your scan, I think you need to start with checking all your fuses. The passenger-side seat control module sees no power to any of the motors. They're all supplied from a thermofuse that sits in a box under the driver's seat, just aft of your KESSY. If the KESSY took water, there's an excellent chance of water in there too. Thermofuses in that box supply a number of high-demand consumers, all the seat motors and I think all the window up/down motors via the door control modules. We know you've had some shorts, so check all fuses everywhere. You have fuse boxes in four locations: passenger side of under-hood plenum, under the steering wheel, driver's side of the trunk above the VPS battery, and the thermofuse box I mentioned above.

PM'd Uwe
I did look in that thermofuse box next to the kessy and its as good as new. No signs of water and all fuses tested good with the continuity meter. The interior was partially apart when I got the car. The drivers seat was only held down by 2 of the 4 fasteners and none of the electrical connectors were plugged in. I have not yet removed the passenger seat but I am guessing it is unplugged also. The previous owner told me a bit about it but it was hard to understand with his German accent. He said there was only a little bit of water that got on the carpet and that he tried putting the car through insurance but they didn't accept his claim. I did a carfax on it to confirm his story and it did have a claim for $0 but the title is active and normal still.
I have been through all the fuses under the dash, in the trunk .
This Phaeton is a 4.2l v8 so only 1 ecu I think. The w12 will be next after we figure this one out!

You have Continental Kessy, and good luck with that.
I do not recall any tool on market can read SKC for it and add key in it Except VW Factory scan tool. That why guy gave you wrong SKC.

Also keys has to be precode to be able to add key with VCDS , mean it has to be order by VIN number, or if you have VDO kessy there is same tools that can precode key.

Drew,

Welcome. You're Verified now.

I do not think you have the correct PIN code. I'm reasonably confident that PIN codes for that generation of stuff were still limited to 4 digits (and need to be entered with a leading 0).

PS: Moving this to Car Repair Support

I would rather swap out all of the electronics in this car than take it to the dealership in it's current state. I haven't called yet but I have heard from a few of their techs that they won't even touch a Phaeton here. Especially one that won't come out of park, and has completely deflated air ride suspension :banghead:

I have a feeling I will be dealing with European Parts Emporium soon, but there might be another chance at fixing it myself when something I bought recently arrives:

I have a 6.0 w12 engine sitting behind me on a stand and I was going to use this kessy for it. I did get the 4 digit pin code from the old one so I have a better feeling about this one working.
So If i wanted to use this kessy on the V8 I would still need the correct pin from the continental ?(which is obviously not 19798, or 65281)

Ah yup if doing an 050.......

What I could do is a data transfer and VIN assignment to that Kessy and transfer to the engine ecu or vise versa........provided all equipment is submitted and no dual identifies are permitted and or with valid strips of identity.

Original SKC can be read form ECU, much easy .

You got Kessy and key form Europe, do you know Europe and USA/Canada use different frequency for remote.

For example, Jetta/Golf in USA/Canada use 315mhz and in Europe 433mhz. I am not sure but Phaeton may be same.

I know for sure Audi A6 with kessy has different frequency .

Well I had a chat with a friend of a friend who works at Norden VW in Edmonton and I found out that bringing the car on a trailer is not a problem. Also it's only $89 to match the keys to the car so I figured what the heck, it's worth a shot for that price! I made an appointment for later this week

The Phaeton is running again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D Norden VW had some trouble with one of the keys I got with the car so it's only good for unlocking the doors, but the other one works ok and all is good! Thanks everybody for all your help with this and I will be sure to post a new thread soon when it comes time for me to tackle the w12 kessy swap :)
